I loved HL2 but most of what made these videos great weren't even in the game like the amazing A.I they were trying to show off.

they've cut it because most of the game was leaked on the internet by a hacker...and they had to change a lot of things..the game was meant to be released in 2003..man.....with those graphics it was still a blast in 2004...just imagine how mindblowing it could have been for 2003

No the leak made apparent the game was nowhere near to being released in 2003, Gabe admitted this later. It was pushed back a year because it had to be and nothing to do with the hack. Also they cut a lot of content because it just didn't work and wasn't fun. The A.I they're showing never existed, it was all a scripted tech demo.

@slannmage Even if the AI was scripted for a specific point in the game, it still makes for a realistic feel. The true test though would be to play a second time and try and get things to happen differently. If the AI adapts, then bravo to Valve, if it doesn't, then it will be like rewatching a good movie, not entirely bad in my optinion (especially for 2003)

@Hayden06 They won't adapt because they were scripted. It's not a big suprise though, game developers usually tend to boost the reputation of their AI by using scripted sequences. It's something gamers today are well aware of and will take notice of so the develoeprs today doesn't stand a chance fooling people.

@overkill445 That still saddens me, but I think it had something to do with the source code getting hacked and then Valve had to rush to get a final product again. They cut corners. I think we'd all be happy if we never saw this video though, because it was a good game overall.

I only remember 2 parts from this entire presentation in the retail hl2. The part where they show off the antlions and the driving part, and even those two were pretty different in the finished game. They should release some kind of official addon or complete game or whatever, of what the Beta would be like, so you get to play trought the original concept. But they should release it after ep3 of course.

some of the features in this E3 demo would have been great had they been kept for the final release. Like, say, some of the beta weapons, being able to shoot while zoomed the gunships sliding across the ground when they die how you can use your environment against your enemies (the ravenholm stuff in pt1) instead of just grabbing it and throwing it at them. Or even the striders being able to shoot their penis cannons without needing an info_target implemented into the map... Gman in a robot suit

The hydra was buggy and difficult to implement successfully. I have a video of it in my gallery which shows how it works, but it's too difficult to have successfully. One minute you'd see it doing something vague and then you'd be dead.

Yes it is a beta version, but the original release resembled this beta version, but it actually was stolen from valve so they decided to scrap the plans and redo it to what we know as the Half Life 2 out today.

everytime i play it i think all the driving around doesnt fit "half life" as a whole.

a lot of the fun in hl1 was, to me, being "trapped" in that complex and feeling like exploring it, finding new stuff out and getting a better picture with every level.

hl2 = little bits of a giant world, borders everywhere.

the first one pushed authenticity (atleast in the beginning) and the second one physics.

and now they continue the story without any innovation in gameplay or technology

I haven't seen such quality of textures in official HL2.

That strider scene is MUCH better than the retail version. Here, you aren't in SUCH a haste like you are in the final HL2 when you are defending that ruin (first, you've got to get in that ruin, which is messed up as well. This is IMO the most horrible part in that game) against that two striders.
