  • No me cierran los años.......1965 ??

  • This would have to have been sometime after June 1966, as I doubt the Beatles would've handed them this one to release before they did, in those days.

  • Around this time in aus there were many bands that were copys of english bands ,there was a band the same as the stones , beatles , animals , an so on

the fact they were in aus and no one in England heard them they were able to get away with it , this song was writen by the beatles and there version was out first

  • @AshStrat1

What was the Australian copies of The Stones? Beatles? Animals? and so on?

Sure they copied music trends and dress styles just as the British bands and US bands did. The Rolling Stones copied black amercian artists' music until they started to write their own music. The Beatles covered some US records. The Animal's didn't write any of their early hits, they were mainly US written songs.

Have a look at all the covers the English artists had hits in Britain with in the 60's.

  • Wow what a great tune! these guys are unreal!

  • 1965? I knew the Beatles were a hack...

  • wrong year beattles relsesed in '66

  • I was a Malaysian student studying in Perth way back then. Was that John Farrar on lead guitar? Certainly brought back wonderful memories....

  • @paktuan. Yes it was certainly John Farrar on lead guitar. He currently resides in Malibu.

  • nice!!

  • this sounds just like my band

  • Probably the beatles covered this song a year later

  • @brainslow the Beatles wrote the song.

  • Why would would you listen to it?

  • i was born listening beatles,my dad is a big fan,but a i never heard a powerful version of this song,wow!!!

  • wow!!! i hear the beatles since i was born,my pop is a beatles fan,but this version sounds more raw, more powerful...yeah!!!!

  • 1965!?

  • Never heard of these guys before being in the US. Good Beatles imitation tho.

  • This is so cool!

  • Power-pop in it's purist form. Very nice cover.

  • Which one of the Boys owned a Red Corvette and an Aquarium in Commercial road...??? I used to talk with him when I was 12 YO.....

  • Remember when Aust recording/publishing was up sh t creek? It still is. Performaning Arts can say who comes in and what they do in Australia.

Unions protect us from physical harm. What else are they sopposed to do? Stop you from making decionen?

  • hate cheap covers!

  • this song wasn't recorded until 1966, and I'm sure these guys didn't play it first.

  • Bravi!! Non è facile imitare i mitici,grandissimi,unici,superrrrrrrrrrr Beatles!!

  • How could be it 1965 if Paperback was edit on 1966?

  • great site--thanks...have subscribed

  • nice job, especially in 1965.

  • They get the lyrics wrong in a number of places.

  • lyrics wrong?? that only makes it "more hip"...like when we got Dylan Lyrics wrong at first listen

  • I have to give the band props - great song and they didn't ruin it like most cover bands do when they cover a Beatles classic. Their harmonies aren't as full (I guarantee they didn't have the 8 track mixing at their fingertips that the Beatles did when they made the song), but other than that not bad at all.

  • Beatles didn't use 8 track until 1968. Even Sergeant Pepper was done on 4 track.

  • First Beatles 8 track was Rubber Soul 1966.

  • You're a bit mixed up there, pal. You're thinking of the 8-track cartridge release, which has nothing to do with how it was recorded. They first used 8 track at Trident Studios for 'Hey Jude' on July 31 1968. They didn't have access to 8 track at Abbey Road until September 1968, which they use for 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' (Lewisohn 1992, p.291, 292, 296). 'Paperback Writer' and Revolver were both recorded on 4 track.

  • Does any of the fans know of the cd compilation I keep hearing about - so that I can let Pete Robinson know - many thanks n rock n roll - karen wieland (frederick Wieland) xx

  • That is a terrific cover...Not far off the fab four

  • If you're really Fred Whelan's kid, please let him know he's still a legend in Melbourne!(from Muso Chris)

  • Dear Muso Chris - Thank you for the comment - but Freddies name is spelt

  • no comment to the above - can't be bothered

"yourr" is spelt without an "e"

let's all chew the cud over music that came and went over forty years ago .........

  • it's not live

  • Decent cover, but the Beatles version is the best, of course.

  • Why do you have "(1965)" showing when the Beatles' own version wasn't done until 1966?

  • you know what maestro you are absolutely categorically perfectly really reaally corect my son

  • Best cover I've ever heard. Actually improved here for my ears, anyway. I never heard of this band (I'm in the U.S.) All the more reason to give them a plug.

  • Thes guys absolutely dominated the uni. party scene in the mid to late '60's..they'd roll up to gigs in 4 separate Ford Mustangs..they were highest grossing band in Oz..and they were great live..I saw them at the St Kilda Town Hall in '68....

  • @whizbang47 : It's John Farrar's first BIG band....The Strangers were his 1968 Aussie cover band in Melbourne......he went on to join The Shadows in the UK & then became Olivia Newton-John's MD...with some big show credits...when he was starting out in Oz, we really loved his multi faceted music skills...he wrote, arranged & sang beautifully.....all at once.....and he married Pat Carroll..what a foxy babe she was then.....I saw them work the Wrest Point Hotel in 1969...he was amazing...

  • @whizbang47 : check out his hits 'Reckless' & Music Makes My Days songs....

  • Great cover. As good as it gets :) Thanks for posting.

  • better that the beatles orginal :(

    never thought id say that

  • also good lipsync!

  • goddamn ringy could take lessons from that drummer

  • Check out The Shindogs taking a "Ticket To Ride".

  • A very good run through of one of the BERRY VEST Beatles' singles. Enjoyable.

  • They were simply the best Ozzie band..all very talented players..I saw them at a uni gig at the St Kilda Town Hall in 1968...each band member arrived with an amazing chick in tow..they were reputed to be grossing $70K per annum as band on the university & corporatein the those days!!!

  • I've never heard that before, very good cover :)

  • There's something about the swing to this that is somehow better than the beatles version - it seems tighter somehow - good work!

  • these guys did a great job on this song.its not easy to do, unless you have 4 good singers all in the same band. they were a great live band, and did beachboys stuff better than anyone else in aus. [at that time.]

  • The Strangers were the house band for "The Go Show".

The show ran in Melbourne from mid/late 1964-August 1967 for around 200 episodes.

I'm pretty sure this was not released by them as a record, but only recorded for the one-off TV show performance.

The guitarist next to the drummer is John Farrar who produced and wrote songs for Olivia Newton John and wrote some of the hit songs for the film Grease.

Peter Robinson is the singer/bass player.

    Graeme "Garth" Thompson drums.

    Terry Walker guitar.

  • FREDERICK WIELAND - is the guitarist in the band. - Terry Walker joined a long time after Frederick left to form The Mixtures - The pushbike song & in the summertime.

  • well actually it's not a good cover, i mean everyone prefer the beatles style not the cover son dig it? guitars are good but vocal... nah, i didn't like :P

  • You should lighten up. This is not an easy song to do; it has complex harmonies and a dense guitar sound. The group here pulls it off. Yes we all know and LOVE The Beatles but this is a nice alternative.

  • Given the date this was made - mid 60's the quality and performance are excellent - especially compared to the rubbish around then. When anyone out there making judgements and opionions makes a living from the music business, then perhaps opinions like these would be valued, but if not, who cares. Karen Wieland - wife of guitarist Frederick Wieland - The Strangers, The Mixtures

  • I thought the beatles wrote this song. Anyway very good

  • Yeah they did. This cover performance would have to be from late '66 or early '67 because The Beatles released the single in May of '66.
