Gawd. Does anybody who grew up in the LA area when this song first came out remember this? They would add the radio call letters right in the middle of the song, so apparently, I listened to KFJ growing up. LOL! Talk about effective advertising -- I'm still remember it over thirty years later.

The clip of Kelly crying came from American Idol footage I believe. It was because she had lost her voice the day before she was going to be performing due to her somewhat self-imposed grueling schedule of rehearsing songs.
It was something she had never experienced before vocally and she believed she would either not be able to perform or possibly make a fool of herself. Unlike other contestants from that season, her initial auditions had not yet been broadcast so America hadn't gotten to hear her yet.
Anyway, she sang the next day - reportedly after drinking a ton of olive oil to soothe and heal her vocal strain - AND SHE WAS BRILLIANT! If I remember correctly it was the "You're All I Need Performance." So anyway, you can imagine after all she had worked for and been through up to that point, her fate seemed at the time to hand in the balance of a miracle. But of course our KC pulled it off like she ALWAYS DOES and sounded amazazing!!!

She had laryngitis from the overworking her vocal chords. Debra Byrd the vocal coach said that Kelly became severely dehyrdrated as well. Kelly said that she was afraid that she would make a fool out of herself on national television. She prayed the night before as did tjhe contestants and was able to perfprm the next day.
And the olive oil rumor isn't true. When she was interviewed after she won, she said, "Olive oil is nasty. I don't know where they got that from. No, I didn't do that. But hey if that helps you, go for it."
I love her! She would have been a big star with or without AI:-)

America had heard her sing. We heard her sing "REspect" in the top 30. She got laryngitis before the first live Top 10 show.
