  • I sing this song frequently

  • I LOVED Mr. Hooper and cried when he died. I watched the episode when that happened even though I was well past the age of watching Sesame Street.

  • awesome dance breakout @ 0:41. also this dude is terribly off-beat.

  • Oh shit, I got it wrong =(

  • Fair play to him. I think he knows full well he can't sing, so he's not really attempting to sing, but just talking over the music in a jolly way.

We all miss you Mr Hooper.

  • @athull08

Yes, we certainly do miss Mr. Hooper! He was a great guy!

  • ok...send me back to school...I guessed the lollipops because they were not matching colors with each other, like the other 3 groups d'oh

don't have time or space to type them all;but they

were all special and I warmly remember them all!

Thanks to Jim Henson for putting all this together!

And mstatz,THANKS for sharing this with the world, feels refreshing to me!

  • Poor old Mr. Looper couldn't carry a tune in a bucket..LOL

  • hes singing waaaayyy off beat

  • Mr. Hooper is a TEDDY BEAR!

  • I'm 25 took me a min to figure it out lol

  • I love the Black-girls look on her face when Mr. Hooper says to her face "Can you guess which group just doesn't belong"

    ...so cute.

  • @xxxRFIARxxx:

You think a veiled reference to racism, huh?

  • @LHZZ12MM

Not really. I was merely pointing out that she gave him a look like "WTF are you singing?"

    lol

  • lol...ok...I was reading into your comment there.

  • @LHZZ12MM - I doubt it, why is there a chinese boy and black girl playing the game if it was racism???

  • His singing adds charm

  • I couldn't figure that out!

  • lol it took me a minute to figure it out i was like wait... oh that one. and i'm 20 he hehe

  • Lol, I'm 23 and couldn't figure it out that fast :P

  • I'm 45 and I couldn't figure it out...but then in my case, i can claim early onset Alzheimer's...

  • Hah!

  • and could sing off beat, lol!

  • There was 1 Hooper skit where he sang a song called " When I WAs Little As You Are." and showed a book that had old photos of NYC when he was a kid.

    He sand it quite well.

In this he just says the worrds without really singing and this was not the only time he did that.

  • wow he really cant sing at all. god bless 'im

  • I wonder why later on they shortened these which didn't give time for everyoneat hom to figure out which group doesn't belong although the non street versions of 3 Of these Things still had the longer music.

  • OMG early sesame street was B&W?????????

  • Actually it was in color from the beginning.

Can't remember the exact reason why this cilp isn't.

  • probly an early recording, if you look closely, you can see some color, but it's darkened.

  • did the foo fighters get the idea for one of thier songs from this?

  • He got the song mixed up. XD;;;

    RIP MR HOOPER.

  • ah good ol' bk/wh days - i love @ :37 when he's like can you guess which group doesn't belong, and the camera's on a black girl and a white kid; and the girl looks soo confused, lol.

  • Mr. Hooper:

Hi kids we're gonna play a game!

    Kids:

A Game? We've been playing for hours! we wanna eat not play a game, Good-bye!

Come on get's go ti Charlie's for lunch.

    Door Slams.

  • I don't care if Mr.Hooper could sing or not! I always liked Mr.Hooper. He would have been cool to have as a Grandpa. I miss him very much!

  • wow i got that wrong...i was thinking about the type of candy it was not the amount ! AHHH

  • Sounds like Rex Harrison was his vocal coach! :)

  • yeah peanut is better at singing haha

  • jeff dunham alias peanut can do it better :P

  • This is very very classic. It isn't even in color! Mr. Hooper set the stage for the "Now it's time to play our game" segment.

  • I think it is in color, I seen some clips that look like they're in B&W but I see a hint of red and green in this one.

  • SS was in color from the beginning though I'm not sure why this clips is in B&W.

  • horrible tempo

  • Alright caramels -- back of the bus.

  • Wow, I got that one wrong!!! I thought it was hard candy vs the soft caramels. I didn't even notice the number of item. Back to preschool for me!!!

  • so there are four categories in the form.

    one category has four "contents"

so the three with three don't belong... because they are not expressions of the whole.

  • omg i was so young but i remember mr hooper and when he died tho at time i didnt understand

  • It's almost like he was on heavy drugs or something. I loved that man though. I never noticed he couldn't sing whatsoever. :p

  • wow what year is this?

  • wow..Mr. Hooper. I remember when he died & of course the wrote it into the show. Talk bout memories. Hope someone has more of him.

  • Wow mr. Hooper. God bless his soul.

Anyone out there remember big bird always called him MR. Looper.

  • Yes!

  • I remember the screen split up into four quarters. Each quarter showed a kid doing some activity, while one of the four was doing something strikingly different. The song "one of these kids is doing his own thing" was pretty groovy, although the "game" was an insult to our intelligence; even as youngsters!

  • Teaching kids how to conform before they are old enough to question it. Yeah!

  • That's not the only one with the lyrics in this video.

  • lmfao!!!

  • At least he was good with 'Cran-berry!!!' in the late '60s.

  • I remember him singing a beautiful song that might have been called "When I Was As Little As You Are." He was showing photos of himself as a boy. I haven't seen that bit on Sesame Street since I was VERY little.

  • mr. Hooper was cool.

  • Bless that dear man. His true talents laid not in singing but in whipping up birdseed milkshakes.

  • My last 15 B&W posts all came from episode # 179, which first aired January 14, 1971!

  • Does anybody have the 90's version "one of these kids is doing their own thing......"

  • That "politically correct" term of the song actually showed up in the late 70's or early 80's. You wouldn't want to give the message that they "didn't belong" because they were "not like the others".

  • HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA your funny....do remember the more jazzed up versions?

  • @mstatz

I had no idea that the words of this song were changed for politically correct reasons. Very interesting indeed!

  • Weird, that must be late-90s, because I grew up in the early 90s and I remember the song saying 'doesn't belong', not 'doing their own thing'.

  • know one really remembers i guess it is obsolete but I know for sure hooper was not singing it but if anybody has at least the late late 80's version or remembers it hit me up

  • Say what? I'm not sure what you're saying. :-P

  • I remember it, but I almost had myself convinced it didn't exist since no one else seems to remember "One of these kids is doing their own thing." I say it to students in my classes all the time and they don't get it.

  • oh wow i am so happy i am not the only one........i wish someone would post it. If I could go back in time I would record all my favorite ones. Thank you for the reply.

  • I do remember the four way split screen too! I think that was marketed for us eventual Generation X'ers.

  • If mstatz got this clip from his copy of Episode 158, then it aired in 1972-73.

  • It was a tricky video here! But I guess it was before 1975.

  • What year was that? 1975 or later?

  • I think that was probably before 1975 because Mr. Hooper pass away around 1980. I couldn't get which pile was different because Mr Hooper was using all "candy".

  • Actually is was in 1982 he died.

Anyway noticed how he didn't sing he more than less said the words?

wonder why. Speaking of wondering does anyone have the skit where Luis sings about wondering?
