@clairemektuplar I think you meant to say that she is an excellent player and you wish you had her talents and her motivation to work as hard as she did for this piece! I believe there is nothing wrong with showing emotion as you play as it is her work and she is playing for us to listen and enjoy. Thank you for being such a grateful and courteous music lover, and I hope you do not say that to everyone who has worked hard to get where they are now. Sincerely, a fellow music lover and musician =)
@bella26piano i think you are sarah chang and that is your fake account. calm down sarah. i think you should be kind to what people think. i didnt like that. and i hope someday you will be human. cuz i dont think so. you should understand what people think and thought. and if it is not about you well, there is nothing you should or can say. that was what i thought. it isnt about you and it doesn't care you.Sincerely, great, great person who thinks you should be respectful about people's thoughts
One of the most beautiful violin concertos I have evr heard!! Sarah is truly magnificent. I can only imagine the sacrifices she must have made in her life to reach this level of perfection.
How can you people actually say Sarah Chang plays like a robot? I bet most of you can't even play a musical instrument. It takes dedication and commitment, both of which this young, talented girl has! She has probably practiced for hours upon end to perfect this piece, and she probably looks "robotic" because of the amount of concentration it takes to play such a beautiful piece. So before you go blasting outrageous comments like so, try playing a piece this hard and see how you look!
I don't think at all !!! that she has no passion and plys it mechanical !!!
on the contrary. I find it meeningfull, passionate, she seems to live what she plays, to feel it in herself. she slow on the right point, speed wherever it needs to. .. it is -if not the best - one of the most accomplished version i've ever heard.
Why no soul? I really don't get it. If you only listen to the music without seeing the player (yeah, as Asian, the target you'd most like to criticize on), will you say the same thing? The music and critics world are filled with personalities, but before you attack recklessly, think about how well you really know music.
Sarah is the complete violin princess, always playing with soul and passion, a force of nature ,a one off and the complete violin virtuoso. Both in childhood and as an adult her performances have never wavered, unlike many young progidy's especially girls who lose their way in their teen years. Go see her live for a lifetime experience that you will never forget.
I just saw all this racial stuff against Asians... what I have to say is that if you want to make a case for Asians not playing soulfully, do it on a different video. Comment on a video with an Asian who is playing like a robot. Do NOT do it on this video, where Sarah is playing with soul. Look at her face and her motions, but most of all, LISTEN TO THE MUSIC! And if you think they are disgracing the violin, why are there NO negative comments about the way she's playing (besides yours)?
Having seen Sarah play so many times live, well to me she plays with so much soul, joy and passion. It seems like the violin just takes over her presence as she performs as if in a magical trance, often with eyes shut, gently dancing and swaying to the rythm, interacting with sweet, gentle little smiles and expressions as she quietly plays her music. Heifetz plays like a robot, all method and correctness but no soul or compassion showing. Sarah Rules !
lmao every but every video related with violins there is always someone saying "I can play this" we dont give a fuck if you can play this because just playing everyone can even a monky well trained but making music only a fews musicians can.
I would pay alot just to see Sarah Chang playing live!!!
@sarahchunstar Dude, people play this piece when they're 8, but no one plays like Sarah Chang and thats why ppl pay to see her and not you...btw I can play nit too and I'm 15 too ;)

I think that I speak for everyone here: "I don't give a damn". Or do you think I enter youtube to search random anonimous people on the coment part looking if they can play the piece on the video? I don't think so.

@capreecex1990 today the world of music is handled by Asian, remove Lang lang and Yundi Lee in Piano, Yoyoma in cello and sarah chang and ryu Goto in violin you loose some of the greatest players in the world. just look at menuhin competition where the judges are all American or European, Asian still arrive in first positions... furthermore, Sarah Chang is American and got her education in USA and she plays like Julliard guys. But you probably have never seen that school regarding your comment
@capreecex1990 you're back again trolling, first it was c0mpulpf and Majhnavea0 and now under a new account capreecex1990, my advice to you crackpot, grow up and get a life. Basta !!
@c0mpuipf All in all... You just have to accept that the old European and American virtuosos like Heifetz, Stern and Milstein aren't coming back from the dead anytime soon :-| .The violinists of today like Sarah Chang, Hilary Hahn, Judy Kang, Midori and Ryu Goto are the violinists of today. They all have amazing technique and emotion if you don't see that. well I feel sorry for you.
@heathersvancara I saw Jennifer Koh perform Szymanowski's First Violin Concerto in concert about a year ago and she wore a watermelon pink dress with silver shoes! Lol
ok let me tell you what i feel. When it comes to violin, you asians are useless, even dead inside. This speaks nothing to me, it's tasteless.Aside from technical balance and, musically you're like rats or cockroaches:unwelcomed guests. When referring to a piece, I'll never refer to it as being played by chu cho chi cha cho chi chang bang li lai li lu li lang long, but other (refer to any great violinist of the past century).it would be torture to live in the present without earlier recordings,
wow. don't be such an arrogant prick, music isn't about racism, you sound more dead inside than her. Sarah Chang doesn't sound like the most Asian name either, Sarah? common. She interpreted this piece beautifully, you know who called a specific race " rats or cockroaches:unwelcomed guests.'' Hitler. Think before you speak, it would be a torture to live in the present with people like you.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
don't play the hitler card,i specified 'musically'.Suppose i grow up listening to some music from another planet, i'll never be able to reflect what the 'aliens' thought, because my personality isn't shaped that way. they're living in an 'asian' world having an 'asian personality' listening and playing Mozart, with a blank stare in their eyes, not comprehending what the music is about.Chang,Chu,Cho just play the nOTES.Everything is Flat and Grey&they're damaging the violin as an instrument.
@c0mpuipf Hey. You may never COMPLETELY understand.. but honestly.. you are what my teachers call "a musical racist". Sarah grew up in a WESTERN world.. look it up she was raised in Philadelphia and went to Juilliard to study. Mr. Yehudi Menuhin even said "her emotions are just so pristine and pure; she's the most perfect, ideal violinist I have ever listened to". She admitted she researches about the composers background to connect to the music.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
buddy, she evokes no feeling and delivers no message, just like ALL of the other asians i've listened to on the violin. It's not that she 'understands' she doesnt even try to.Call me a "musical racist" (wow, teachers!), i don't care.Thing is none of the asians came close to violinists from the past century, and people agree with that. That's just another way of putting it: it's not for you and you're ruining the music.Piling up at every competition like mongoloids
@c0mpuipf If she didn't evoke any feeling or deliver any message, then how come she's so well known and plays with numerous orchestras? Obviously, people acknowledged her as a great violinist and accepted her talent. What makes you think that she doesn't qualify as a professional violinst? Let me reword that. Who are you to judge if she's good or not? Are you like a professional musician or conductor or singer? Don't just go and start picking flaws out of anyone.
@c0mpuipf excuse me? i am chinese, and i have been playing violin for 1 and a half years. i am already on suzuki book 5, and my musical teacher said i have great feeling and talent. So why don't you play the violin if you say that "Asians" don't deliver a message at all. oh wait... if you can't play, then you shouldn't put comments like that on videos.
@CoDF1sh let's just say 'i can', not into bragging and shit.I don't say i'm better then her technically, i'll never be, but when i fail to discover/reveal -to myself- something in a piece, i expect some super-virtuoso prodigy to do that. The last generation did deliver, every one of them,in their own way, but chi cho chi chian ching don't. And they're all over the place just playing notes and not revealing any "depth".
@c0mpuipf Sarah Chang is American and plays like all Juilliard guys... thank you to comment yourself before speaking. She was awarded by European and American judges known to be the best teachers in the world.
@c0mpuipf Where the hell does all the hatred towards Asian come from?? You are just beyond me. You need salvation... This much of blind animosity is dangerous and self destructive, and above all downright disgusting.
@c0mpuipf "chu cho chi cha cho chi chang bang li lai li lu li lang long"............... holy shit, only a psychiatrist can decipher a music score like this
Sarah responded to my email of 7/22/11 by answering that YES! She will play, on 8/6/11, Mendelssohn's "violin Concerto" on a Guarneri. Specifically, she will play on her Guarnerius Del Gesu. She will be performing at Tanglewood. Are you, JazzSpazzMimi, playing with Sarah at a Tanglewood Camp???
If after centuries of search you would discover, that the answer to all the questions of the universe was this one song, I don't think that anyone would even blink, because it would be the obvious answer.
This piece was written for Ferdinand David who gave the premiere of the concerto on his Guarneri violin. The Guarneri is favored by Itzhak Perlman. Is Sarah playing a Guarneri?
Sorry to go on, but there is much ignorance and butchery of phrasing in this performance. The girl's teachers have obviously just allowed her to habitually play blindly on, trampling onexpressive phrasing opportunities--such as from 4.37, to cite but one early one. (Again, compare with Oistrakh and Kondrashin). She relies on just hitting the notes and brute speed and inappropriate aggression to carry her along, althogether missing the composer's intended message. All of it her teachers' fault.
@michael2010now That's your opinion. Nobody can fully understand the composer's intended message unless you are Mendelssohn. If you think her performance does not reflect the composer's message, one could say Oistrakh and Kondrashin didn't do so well either. It's all based on how you listen. But that doesn't give you the right to judge one's performance and say her emotions are fake. In fact, NYT said " Chang's performance emotion captivate audiences across the globe."
Sorry, this girl was at this stage--like Hilary Hahn persists in being--simply a nice-sounding playing machine. The overlay of "emotion" in this performance is made-up, pseudo-passionate, synthetic; not real. She was just too young to know what the work means. C/f Oistrakh's performance (here on Youtube) with Kondrashin, which her teacher(s) should have at least got her to listen to. Perhaps they did. But I suspect that the idolising of her by Menuhin in her girlhood somewhat misdirected her.
Everyone can be just as talented! It doesn't only have to be one Ethnic Origin / Race that are the best! I hate when ppl always compare to asians and I hate when asians are always so cocky....
I dont like the asian style of playing. ALL OF THEM are waaay to emotional and waay to vibrato-ey. Emotion and passion is very important, BUT not sappy, like molten butter mixed with molasses. Music is supposed to be crisp and clean. Henryk Szerying and Arthur Grumiaux masters this.
@kuvhlubkojibleegxwbo i dont want to be racist, all the asian people i've heard play are like this, now Im not saying all asians do this, and im not saying other people do this, but statistically, through my observations, most of them do play in such a style. and I'm not white.
@tombstone909 His comment wasn't racist in the first place. If you look into the dictionary as to what racist means it means emotional or irrational feelings associated with fear and hate. His comment involved "raciology" or a rational analysis of racial differences. There is nothing even remotely racist about that.
This is a great dance show... what, it was a violin concert ?!
And she holds her bow like shit, I am sorry to tell. If you disagree then check out how normal violinists hold their bows, for instance David Oistrakh...
I tell you from my own experience and I cant for the violin. Its not you hitting on something like drugs, cigarettes or to listen to strangers. Keep up the good work
I wonder whether you could upload the whole movement instead of dividing it into 2 parts. It's okay but can't really climax with my feelings.

They all have amazing technique and emotion if you don't see that. well I feel sorry for you.

ok let me tell you what i feel. When it comes to violin, you asians are useless, even dead inside. This speaks nothing to me, it's tasteless.Aside from technical balance and, musically you're like rats or cockroaches:unwelcomed guests. When referring to a piece, I'll never refer to it as being played by chu cho chi cha cho chi chang bang li lai li lu li lang long, but other (refer to any great violinist of the past century).it would be torture to live in the present without earlier recordings,
c0mpuipf 6 months ago
@c0mpuipf
wow. don't be such an arrogant prick, music isn't about racism, you sound more dead inside than her. Sarah Chang doesn't sound like the most Asian name either, Sarah? common. She interpreted this piece beautifully, you know who called a specific race " rats or cockroaches:unwelcomed guests.'' Hitler. Think before you speak, it would be a torture to live in the present with people like you.

don't play the hitler card,i specified 'musically'.Suppose i grow up listening to some music from another planet, i'll never be able to reflect what the 'aliens' thought, because my personality isn't shaped that way. they're living in an 'asian' world having an 'asian personality' listening and playing Mozart, with a blank stare in their eyes, not comprehending what the music is about.Chang,Chu,Cho just play the nOTES.Everything is Flat and Grey&they're damaging the violin as an instrument.
c0mpuipf 6 months ago
@c0mpuipf Hey. You may never COMPLETELY understand.. but honestly.. you are what my teachers call "a musical racist". Sarah grew up in a WESTERN world.. look it up she was raised in Philadelphia and went to Juilliard to study. Mr. Yehudi Menuhin even said "her emotions are just so pristine and pure; she's the most perfect, ideal violinist I have ever listened to". She admitted she researches about the composers background to connect to the music.

buddy, she evokes no feeling and delivers no message, just like ALL of the other asians i've listened to on the violin. It's not that she 'understands' she doesnt even try to.Call me a "musical racist" (wow, teachers!), i don't care.Thing is none of the asians came close to violinists from the past century, and people agree with that. That's just another way of putting it: it's not for you and you're ruining the music.Piling up at every competition like mongoloids
c0mpuipf 6 months ago
@c0mpuipf If she didn't evoke any feeling or deliver any message, then how come she's so well known and plays with numerous orchestras? Obviously, people acknowledged her as a great violinist and accepted her talent. What makes you think that she doesn't qualify as a professional violinst? Let me reword that. Who are you to judge if she's good or not? Are you like a professional musician or conductor or singer? Don't just go and start picking flaws out of anyone.
pol4ris012 5 months ago
@c0mpuipf excuse me? i am chinese, and i have been playing violin for 1 and a half years. i am already on suzuki book 5, and my musical teacher said i have great feeling and talent. So why don't you play the violin if you say that "Asians" don't deliver a message at all. oh wait... if you can't play, then you shouldn't put comments like that on videos.
CoDF1sh 5 months ago
@CoDF1sh let's just say 'i can', not into bragging and shit.I don't say i'm better then her technically, i'll never be, but when i fail to discover/reveal -to myself- something in a piece, i expect some super-virtuoso prodigy to do that. The last generation did deliver, every one of them,in their own way, but chi cho chi chian ching don't. And they're all over the place just playing notes and not revealing any "depth".
c0mpuipf 5 months ago
@c0mpuipf Sarah Chang is American and plays like all Juilliard guys... thank you to comment yourself before speaking. She was awarded by European and American judges known to be the best teachers in the world.

Sorry to go on, but there is much ignorance and butchery of phrasing in this performance. The girl's teachers have obviously just allowed her to habitually play blindly on, trampling onexpressive phrasing opportunities--such as from 4.37, to cite but one early one. (Again, compare with Oistrakh and Kondrashin). She relies on just hitting the notes and brute speed and inappropriate aggression to carry her along, althogether missing the composer's intended message. All of it her teachers' fault.

alexwonton 6 months ago
@michael2010now That's your opinion. Nobody can fully understand the composer's intended message unless you are Mendelssohn. If you think her performance does not reflect the composer's message, one could say Oistrakh and Kondrashin didn't do so well either. It's all based on how you listen. But that doesn't give you the right to judge one's performance and say her emotions are fake. In fact, NYT said " Chang's performance emotion captivate audiences across the globe."
Faith804 6 months ago
Sorry, this girl was at this stage--like Hilary Hahn persists in being--simply a nice-sounding playing machine. The overlay of "emotion" in this performance is made-up, pseudo-passionate, synthetic; not real. She was just too young to know what the work means. C/f Oistrakh's performance (here on Youtube) with Kondrashin, which her teacher(s) should have at least got her to listen to. Perhaps they did. But I suspect that the idolising of her by Menuhin in her girlhood somewhat misdirected her.
michael2010now 6 months ago
Of all the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto Movement 1 played, Sarah Chang is the perfectest, IMHO. Better than Heifetz, Perlmen, Szeryng, Menuhin, etc.

@kuvhlubkojibleegxwbo:
I am Asian, and I am not even cocky at you with a cocky comment.
I do not put a judgement on you, but I see that you are also generalizing and prototyping.
@ModellMeister:
However, I do not know Sarah's style is a kind of Asian style as you said.
If it is, Asian style is good, and I am poud of Sarah who brings Asian style to music players attention.
CT6Flags 6 months ago
I used to ask my band director to play this on his own violin or play the video for me. XD
iluvmusik145 6 months ago
I dont like the asian style of playing. ALL OF THEM are waaay to emotional and waay to vibrato-ey. Emotion and passion is very important, BUT not sappy, like molten butter mixed with molasses. Music is supposed to be crisp and clean. Henryk Szerying and Arthur Grumiaux masters this.
ModellMeister 6 months ago
@ModellMeister that sounds a bit racist! How would you feel if I said I don't like the way white people interpretation Mendelssohn?
kuvhlubkojibleegxwbo 6 months ago
@kuvhlubkojibleegxwbo i dont want to be racist, all the asian people i've heard play are like this, now Im not saying all asians do this, and im not saying other people do this, but statistically, through my observations, most of them do play in such a style. and I'm not white.
ModellMeister 6 months ago
@ModellMeister i didnt really read this comment but its funny as hell you put "and im not white" like that makes it any less racist
tombstone909 6 months ago
@tombstone909 His comment wasn't racist in the first place. If you look into the dictionary as to what racist means it means emotional or irrational feelings associated with fear and hate. His comment involved "raciology" or a rational analysis of racial differences. There is nothing even remotely racist about that.
ignatei 6 months ago
@tombstone909 haha i suppose. bit ironic eh?
ModellMeister 6 months ago
Shouldn't let myself into stupid flaming debates but I cant help myself:
1. Ms Chang is born in the US but of Korean descent, not chinese.
2. Mendelssohn wasn't ameriacan but a jew born in germany and he was hardly guilty of the zionist control over 21'th century mass media.
3. Ms Chang playes like an angel. Why are we even discussing this?
4. Yes; Asians rules when it comes to string instruments. Why? Genetically predisposed? Maybe. don't know, don't care. I just enjoy the playing.
