Herbie seems like he was off his game here. Almost disruptively so. I'd be pissed if the keyboardist played some of that nonsense while I was building a solo. But these guys are all legends, so what can you say? I love Herbie, just not what he was playing in this clip. Just check out the looks Miles was shooting him. Heh. Nevertheless, Garrett played his ass off, and the rest of the band was tight. Great video.

Miles stood up for a lot of his performances because of the slightly different sound you get when playing the trumpet down towards the floor. Its not taught by teachers because it is "incorrect" but it does change the sound from the traditional classical style slightly. Which is why teachers discourage it.

TICETOCAR...Miles was at the end of his life when this concert took place. That may explain his "lack of intensity". Miles was like Picasso, always changing...he was an innovator and while everything he did may not have been the greatest, he wanted to keep moving forward with the music. He was concerned with exploring what was next. And as for the musicians on stage not wanting to be there...I think that is way off. Miles fostered their careers and they had the utmost respect for him.
