The opera singer, Vernon Dalhart, knew that he could take the early Gospel type songs and make sellable records by singing them in a 'hillbilly' voice. That's why he is called 'The Grandfather of Country Music'. Same way with Jimmie Rodgers who is the Father of Country Music. He knew that he, sometimes, needed to keep Gospel in his songs so they would sell. Other than that... you're just a moron.

While Van Zandt and Foley were friends and performed together, I'm pretty sure this was Van Zandt's song first. He says in this video that he wrote the song while living in two places at once, having to drive over the pass often.
