the voice cards between the OBX and OBXa are very different. The OBX has voicecards that have a discrete circuitry design with only one integrated Curtis chip envelope generator on the board. Thats why this thing sounds so warm and good. The OBXa has voiceboards which are built up with Curtis chips ( VCF, VCO, VCA, ENV ) As i posted already i sold this OBXa a while a go and i do not regret it. My OBX is far better sounding even that it does not feature split and layered keyboard...but who cares.
According to Tom Oberheim the OBX and OBXa have the same voice card, but the Xa just lets you split or layer the keyboard. The OBX was updated into the Xa shortly after it was introduced to the Xa so it could compete with the JP8 because it would allow splits and layers. He also mentions in "Vintage SYnthesizers" by Mark Vail in an interview that the SEM, OB1, OBX and OBXa share the same voice.
I have both OB-X 8-Voice and OB-Xa 8-Voice. The sound is very different. The OB-X is more raw, warm and has more power. The Xa sound is harder and the the envelopes are a bit faster. I like both but my absolute favorite is the OB-X.
I agree with you the OB-X sound is much better. For me the best polyphonic analog synth ever! Only the big CS-80 can beat the OB-X but I prefer the OB-X sound more.
@Obee1980 I have the OB-X 8 voice with Encore, the OB-8 with Encore and the OB-Xa with factory midi, i don't sell any and that's by far the best solution if you ask me :-)
I own both an obx and on obxa and the obxa has much better attack and the ability to layer two patches, but the obx sounds way better. If only there was a mod to give it the same attack level, and if you could layer also ,it would be no contest. So i will keep both.
I sold the OBXa and i kept the OBX... that was the best thing i could do ! The OBX is so much fatter and better sounding ! For my ears it is the best sounding polysynth ever made. The Yamaha CS80 also sounds massive but i like the Oberheim sound more, but that is a question of taste.
The Oberheim's were awesome. They had a unique voice and were on many recordings from the early 80's, onwards. When is Tom going to put out the whole family on software? (I know, that comment won't go down with "purists", but if we want a taste of these very, very tasty machines, let's hope he puts a bundle of "something" out there)!
I'm looking at getting one of these. Thank you for making this video. I particularly appreciate that it's done with no fx or other synths playing. Very informative!
I sold it cause i have an Oberheim OBX as well. I think the OBX sounds much better and has more life than the OBXa. As well those two synths take a lot of space in the studio and in a limited working space with tons of other vintage gear you have to select the gear you really like and use ...
u gota learn chords brother....and playing

"It's really hard to sell this beautiful vintage synthesizer" ... Then why do you sell it...??! Are in need of money to that point ...?

Nice video!
Is that the Encore Midi-kit you have installed?
That´s a good idea to put in in the woodsides.
I think I´ll do this on mine.
