I discovered economy picking on accident one day in the attempt to play certain phrases, and the nature of the phrases forced me to basically economy pick. It actually started out as simple raking but then I connected it with strokes in the other direction. I still can't sweep pick straight up and down for the life of me, and I suck at alternate picking. Yet I've developed an economy picking style.

Yeah, Marshall must be the fastest sweeper I have ever seen in my life! Actually, he may well be fastest at everything - alternate, sweeping, legato, tapping...

Thats Awesome lol, i had no idea that ive been picking economy until this video, im self taught and thats just how i play, i havent learned sweeping yet though

i am 100% self taught, and i came up with a little rule of thumb for economy picking when i first started experimenting with it, if you need to drop down a string and theres an odd number of notes on the string before the drop start with a down stroke because that last note will be a downstroke,and if its even start with an up,and adjust for going up a string,thats a very useful little R.O.T for anyone just starting out on shred type stuff....
