hey I just bought this online I'm wondering I have emulators and roms already downloaded on my computer can I use the same ones on the gp2x or do they have to be from a specific site?
I still don't understand why people continue to buy these knock off systems, when if you hack your PSP, it will open you up to a world of better emulators, more homebrew games and apps, and an INTERNET browser as well.
However, with that said, the PSP isn't perfect. I don't like the frame rate on the PSP. Running fast in Super Mario, for example, the image does the "Ghost" thing, where it is blurred. I'm waiting for a handheld that doesn't have this issue. These guys could make it if they tried
i was looking at GP2X shop for buying one, and hesitated between the wiz and the canoo (which only has more memory than the wiz as far as specs go from what i understand). My main use for the wiz would be the emulators, and i hate playing classic games with an analog stick.
so far I'm not decided yet. I prefer the round buttons on the canoo but definitely prefer the D-pad on the wiz. I'll prolly just go with the wiz i think.
@Dreadfultime Too late I ordered a wiz from evildragon already :P.
I think in the long run, the Wiz will have better emulators overall than the Dingoo, once the developers have had enough time to manage to tweak things enough. Also the Dingoo doesn't seem as reliable as the Wiz IMO. Tweeterman's experience with the Dingoo (see his channel) should be enough proof that that chinese stuff isn't very reliable, and i ALWAYS drop my handhelds sooner or later, I can't help it.
@Kafei2006 i kinda agree with you about the power of the device but to be honest i dont care about ps1 emulation, im good with gba, snes, nes and maybe genesis emulation. the dingo already has dingux wich has been a big improvement. imma look for the channel you mention though
@Dreadfultime Well that's just you, every person looking for an open source handheld has to look into what they're expecting from the device and choose accordingly.
The Wiz was the closest thing to what I was hoping from the handheld of my dreams =). It might not be the case for you, and you're prolly better off choosing a Dingoo considering you don't need to be able to emulate a lot of console and that it's cheaper and does what you expect it to do...
@Kafei2006 Personally I don't find tweeter man to be a good reviewer of emulation and handhelds. I like both of the Dingoo and the Wiz, but I'm not sure about the caanoo yet.
@Dreadfultime Also i wanted to be able to emulate ScummVM, and the touch screen on the Wiz is good for that. "Curse of Monkey Island" on a handheld ?? I'm sold ^^ ! Plus the Wiz being the most powerful out of the two, i think in the long run the Wiz will be able to emulate the PS1 to levels that the Dingoo will never be able to achieve. But that's just my opinion.
@kordman916 You and all the people who did a thumbs up on your comment are absolute fucktards. If you can't say anything nice about a persons appearance then SHUT THE FUCK UP.
I just type shit to get thumbs up? I didn't ask for a thumbs up, I never received a thumbs up, who cares about a thumbs up. It doesn't make sense to watch a video about a review then complain about someones hair. Retard.
have you seen or played on the white version??? i need help choosing a color. how smudgy does it get. and have you specifically tested any of the metal slug games?? that game is important to me. thanks
@ilovemaryam08 I've just ordered a white Caanoo from play-asia. Soon as it lands I'm gonna get MAME up and running and get all the Metal Slug games tested pronto.
Them and all the golden age arcade games like Robotron and Berzerk. Ooh, and the Genesis emulator for Sonic.
@ilovemaryam08 Right. My white Caanoo is in my sweaty grasp. It is so glossy and shiny that smudge marks will not be a problem. As for Metal Slug, well, it plays, but at this early stage MAME4ALL is not overclockable so there is a bit of slowdown but I'm sure that in the coming months updates will be available to sort this out. The golden age games work a treat and the screen is damn near perfect.
Once MAME is overclockable I reckon Metal Slug will be perfect.
@ilovemaryam08 Right. I am now in receipt of MAME rom v.37 and I can say with total conviction that Metal Slug plays like a dream. Awesome stuff. Once some of the software issues are taken care of I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before all 6 Metal Slugs are available. Currently it's 1,2 and X and they play superbly well.
Good video, caanoo is definetly a good console, but when I look at the short time of support for the WIZ from GPHS side, I am afraid buying it, also the use of the same hardware (CPU & GPU wise) adds to that effect. As a so-called retro gamer it is a no go for me, because I would miss the DPad. For original GPH games, or homebrew games the new control schemes are indeed interesting. It seems to be a little bit bigger overall than the WIZ, are there exact sizes somewhere?
It has the same power CPU & GPU whise, so don´t expect an N64 emu on it, maybe I will be proven wrong some day, but I think it never reaches playable levels. There is extra RAM yes, but I doubt it´ll add much to make N64 more emulatable on the WIZ.
That point you mention don´t means that the WIZ / Caanoo can handle N64...
But I read they switched something in Caanoos firmware for better float operations support. Because of the former bad floating operation capabilitys of the WIZ no one thought it could be possible to emulate N64, but now with that problem solved their might be some hope for N64 on the Caanoo...
@nabz32x And: 2 times the amount of ram the wiz had.. The wiz had 64 MB, this one 128 MB. The original one had 4.5 MB ram. It had 2 processors (both 64 bit), one (main CPU) 93 MHz, one 63 MHz (GPU). The basic rule for emulating is that you need at least 4 times the capacity to emulate, so a very effective emulator needs at least 400 MHz, with 20 MB of ram. However, nintendo built their games highly effective, so you need much more resources to emulate.
@crasherball Considering this can run wiz programs and the wiz can run programs for the caanoo (as long as they do not require the extra ram) this is more of an alternative model with some new features rather than a new console. It Has wifi via teh usb dongle.
In the past the volume controls were two buttons, Vol- and Vol+
A number of softwares for the GP2X/Wiz used these buttons for things such as returning to the software's menu, most notably the SNES emulator because of there being no other leftover buttons.
Ignoring the home button, there's effectively 2 less buttons on the unit now.
@RupeeClock Well just to let you know the caanoo is not backwards compatible with the wiz emulators every thing is being ported to the caanoo to use the home button.
I don't understand why people keep making fighting games. Other then a select few like super smash bros., nothing has really changed from the original street fighter except the graphics
Do you know if the Caanoo is 100% backword compatible with GP2X WIZ SD Card games i.e Propris+Deicide 3 & Redemption Lair+5 Memorial Games? I am deciding whether to buy a Caanoo or WIZ.
I think most handheld users know the pains of trying to use an analog for standard 2D games. But it looks like an okay device for it's native games, though I'm not a big fan of paying for download only games. I mean It's not like I still have access to any of the games I bought for my GP32 like I would if I could have bought them on some sort of physical media. I also wonder about the video codec support with has been famously poor for anything other than a netbook forcing you to re-encode video
I know you and the boys don't care much for it, but for me it's perfect as it corrected everything i didn't like about the Wiz.
I'm not obsessed with the analog stick at all. I really do think the "doomsday naysayers" on the forums are making a "storm in a teacup" about the whole thing.
I'm not a kid, i'll be 31 next Sep, so its not the opinion of a kid following trends either.
I'm worried about pot durability, but that's the limit of my concerns.
I wonder about the emulating capabilities. If no N64/Ps1 emulation is possible, I doubt that many people will buy this one instead of lets say the dingoo or the wiz.
@downwithdinosaurs The Wiz is cheaper and if this moddel adds no features other than the games, I doubt that many gamers from the retro/emulation/homebrew scene are going to buy the caanoo.
@ichi1082 the caanoo has the g feature that the itouch and ipad has that allow you to tilt the game... also has vibration in it and a bigger screen. other than that same as wiz with an irritating analog stick, really would have been must buy for me if they included an analog and a d pad for classic games.
@ichi1082 i have both:the wiz pad and buttons are incredibly bad designed, and it has just a cross pad, here you have a very fluid analog, plus dorsal buttons are great.
the video definition is better on the Caanoo, so the speakers and the feel in your hands, battery too lasts more on canoo, so canoo is simply better!!
@ichi1082 The Caanoo has a more refined operating system, 3d acceleration, usb host, better button layout, and 2gb onboard storage. It also looks like a more professional handheld, and not a kids toy like the wiz. As the Caanoo developement community grows, games will be more prevalent and the wiz will be left behind as more take advantage of the caanoos support for opengl. I'm hopeful for a fully playable playstation emulator in the near future, as they're already close.
@ichi1082 First of all, the wiz is only around 10-20 USD cheaper. Second, the caanoo actually adds tons of features, namely wifi card support, expanded sd card support, and has twice the sdram as the wiz. Also i think you could only overclock the wiz to around 700 mhz but this one can to 800 just fine.
@ichi1082 I disagree. There is double the RAM, and the bigger screen, better design, and analog stick is a great improvement. They're both about the same price and I would certainly choose this over the Wiz.
@ichi1082 adds no features other than the games? haven't you read the specs? xD touchscreen, wi-fi, better sound control, joystick... the first ones I can remember ^^'
