Matt - Two things. I'm not against airport expansion, it's the first thing I say in the video. They could have built this without going south of the Dania Cut off Canal. IT could have all been easily redone and fit into the area they have now;
The airport chose to do this because the N parallel expansion was much cheaper and was unable to figure out how to spend the most amount of the " stored " airports cash
Unless you bought your house before WW 2 before the airport existed.. I don't see how you really have the right to complain at all!!..
You knew the airport was there before you purchased your property.. and should have known that over time airport traffic would always increase and airplanes are always getting bigger..
Crossing Runways is dangerous.. and the distance of the second north runway from the southern terminals increases airplane taxi time..
Nice job, Kevin! In 2003, I was in grad school at NSU in the Conflict Analysis and Resolution program; I took a class in Public and Environmental Disputes. The FLL dispute was my research subject. In addition to attending many meetings and reading and researching incessantly on the subject as a "neutral" whose goal it was to analyze and assess the conflict in a manner helpful to achieving win-win, J. Rodstrom read my paper. His response: Nice for academia; too idealistic for practice. Hmm.

WITH THIS NEW PLAEN YOU PARKING FEES ARE GOING UP. TAXI,SHUTTLE,LIMO,HOTEL SHUTTLES AND RENTAL CARS. WILL HAVE TO PAY EXTRA $5.00 PER TRIP WITCH YOU WILL PAY AS A PASSENGER.ALL THESE FEES ARE TO PAY FOR BCAD OPERATIONS.RUMWAY 9L CAN BE 9 MIDDLE AND CONVER TAXI WAY IN TO 9L WITH LESS MONEY.
You make a good argument over cost issues and environmental effects. I will give you that. But like so many other viewers have noted, having two parallel runways on the north end of the airport would be far too dangerous seeing how close they are together. San Francisco international has a set up just like that, and they always rate in the top ten each year for number of runway incursions. Its about the safety of the people on the planes. If you aren't happy, then move.
The airport cant even afford to replace the torn down canopies that connect the terminals left from the 1995 Hurricanes. Yet the crooked politicians want to billion dollar runway. Go Fig!
Let see, I'm landing on the new South Runway (9R / 27L) my gear collapses. My right seater is calling for Fire-Rescue as Im doing the Evacuation ProcedureMean-while, my Right Fuel Tank is Ruptured and Fuel is pouring out and down the steep sides of the runway. We try to open the Door and cant because the Fuselage is Twisted. I notice Fire-Rescue cant get through the Bottle Neck of Aircraft on the taxi-way leading to the Runway !!!!!!!!!!
Sure, meanwhile are you spilling your gas all over the private residential homes or the already allocated "eminent domained" area that exists for this very reason ?
Now I see Fire-Rescue attempting to spray foam 4 stories below (40+) from the side of the Runway up the Steep Gradient. Mean while time elapses sparks ignite
In my next life..I Elect the Landing on the North Runway!
I can't believe all of that info was in the EIS study for everyone to read, but apparently only you did !
Really cool man, keep up the good work - Someone told me that the delays coming out of New England will always DELAY the flights regardless of how many runways FLL ever gets...and isn't that the reason we " need more runways ? "...delays ? I've waited longer at some red lights in Hallandale !
You mention the fuel residue on your video. So you complain about 150 airplanes flight on top of you which emit little fuel emissions but don't really care about I-95 and the hundreds of thousands of cars that emit way more emissions than airplanes do. ATC suggesting than a parallel runway is better than 2 separate ones is wrong. They are unsafe because of distance, nothing else. Do your research right!
Where did you find the source for quoting the Air Traffic Controllers? Where did you get the information that the Tower Manager is against the South Runway expansion?
The FAA released on December 19, 2008 that the ROD ( record of decision ) has been made to GO AHEAD with the S. Runway expansion !! Can you believe that ?
By changing the current taxiway/ramp area (depicted in your proposal) would not provide adequate separation of the runways required for safe operation of aircraft.
Not only that, but all the airplanes that would land(and depart) on the "new" runway would be required to taxi to the south end of the airport where most of the terminals are located. Runway incursions are already high on the list of saftey issues and accidents as reported by the NTSB.
Why? How do you think airplane land NOW on 27L(the runway your so concerned about)? Hint: they fly over the FPL plant NOW. What's the big deal? Are we gonna speculate over what COULD happen?
The rationale is a safety one. Everytime a plane has to cross a runway you dimish safety. With your plan, regardless of what is used as a dept or arrival runway, a plane must cross an active runway to get to the terminal. Right now you have traffic jams on the north runway and could have bottlenecks with 2 parallels to the north. With the extension of the south runway you eliminate bottle necks on the taxiways and can split up the traffic to 2 runways vs one.
So safety is the issue. Which is worse? Flying the planes over so many residential neighborhoods and dropping jet fuel on everything we own, or pilots having to cross a runway to get to the gates ?
Do you know what a runway incursion is? The point is, EVERY time an aircraft has to cross an active runway, there is a danger present that another plane could hit the aircraft that is trying to cross.
So to answer your question: YES the saftey of the passengers on the aircraft IS more important than some noise, and some residue that may (or may NOT)be jet fuel on everything you own.
Stick to contracting, because aviation is not you bag for sure.
So tell me, it is safer to endanger the people on the planes, ( let's say 400 ) or everyone of the people in all those homes under the flight path ? If you're gonna build a runway over US1 for gods sake, why not build a tunnel so the planes won't have an INCURSION ? How much cheaper is that ?
Tunnel? The proposed expansion of the south runway 9-R/27-L would allow for vehicle traffic (US1)to travel under the runway. Is this the tunnel your speaking of? Do you mean make a tunnel for the aircraft? If that is what you suggesting, the cost of a tunnel is surely alot more than the proposed expansion over US1.
As far as "endangering" people go, fatal accidents involving runway incursions are 17 times more likely than crashes involving missed approaches, or departure related crashes.
Sorry, But this expansion has been around for over 15 years. How do I know this? I spoke in favor of this expansion when it was first brought to the public. The controllers do not feel the runway is unsafe, it is only unsafe for commerical jets when the runway is too short. This runway expansion will make the job of the controller easier but yet your own alternative will make the job harder. Remember the close call between Delta and United? You will have more of that under your plan.
letizepro - Placing the parallel runway on the north side of the existing e-w runway makes no operational sense at first look. I'm interested to see the documentation from the FLL Air Traffic Controllers that say the the south parallel is unsafe and why
Kevin
28 1/2 years experience as an Air Traffic Controller and I don't give a rip what the manager said - he's a political tool.
Hey Letizepro - I was in Miami last week and spoke with an old friend of mine that is an Air Traffic Controller at FLL. I discussed the expansion plan with him and found that you are correct. The problem with the South runway extension is that it would be elevated and would have only one taxiway to get to and from the runway - this is a BAD plan for so many reasons. I agree with you - build the North paralell.
Hey this is a great video! It was very informational. I live right by the FLL airport. Have you shown this to an officials? Not that they would take the time to watch it anyways...
Kev,I think you hit it right on the money!! Big business and wastefull spending need to be a thing of the past. Not only should they tighten their belts but they should start thinking about our childrens future.I know that i'm going to help in any way that i can to prevent this from happening in my backyard!! I've lived here for 40 yrs +, We need to do anything in our power to stop this injust project. GET OUT OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD !!!!!!!!
