I had a very similar encounter in '99 or '00 in the same area on Thanksgiving day(US). However, there were hundreds of dolphins and they appeared to be migrating. They were all around us, heading in the opposite direction, but the nearest ones stopped to say hello.
We did a drift dive from near Alice toward Klein Bonaire and encountered the large pod of dolphins, a dozen or so turtles and innumerable fish. It was without a doubt the best dive of my life.
Wow, Ricardo, Alice in Wonderland? That's pretty awesome....lucky you. Last trip, while eating breakfast, I saw a pod of 8-10 moving southbound in the open water near Buddy's Reef. I grabbed my gear and raced down just south of Eigtheen Palms in hopes of being there when they cruised by, but no such luck. Great video and congrats on catching such a kick ass dive on video. Thanks for posting.
That was awesome. I have been diving in Bonaire several times and have never seen a dolphin. Were they between Bonaire and Kline Bonaire, or out in the open ocean? What time of year was this?
Hi, Colo. Ricardo answered my post below, this dive was Alice in Wonderland. Talk about a one in a million dive, right? I too have not dove with them when in Bonaire, have only seen them from shore, cruising in the open water just off the reef at Buddy's.
May I ask what dive site this was? I've seen dophins from the shore, but, unfortunately, haven't dove with them in Bonaire. I'm heading back in 2009, maybe I'll have more luck then. Thanks.
