I just got this amp for christmas!! :D but i have an issue with it already..
I turn it on, let the tubes warm up for about 5-10 minutes, then turn it on. When i start to play i notice it's a little quiet. I'll play it for a couple minutes, and it sounds like it's popping. It pops a couple times, the volume bumps itself up to normal sound, and then back down. it'll pop a couple more times over about 10 minutes, then it's good from there; normal sound and everything.
@ice0wn4g I've also been through 2 fuses and i'm on my 3rd one. The first one blew when i got too close to the amp, it made a HUGE humming sound, and died. We went and got some more fuses (250v 3a) and i put one in and played it for a while just for it to pop again. this time i wasnt near the amp at all and id only played it with that fuse for about 5 minutes. the one i have in it now hasn't popped yet and i've only played on it 2 times for about 30-60 minutes each time.
@hereticmilitia yeah i had a poweramp tube going bad. but we got new tubes and the guy doing the repairs still heard popping, so he's got to take the thing apart and i have to pay more money -,- awesome
can someone please please give me advice on a celestion speaker i should replace the sheffield with? really want to get it done, no idea where to start. love celestions!
@axeiston What style of music/type of tone are you looking for? Assuming metal, or at least very hard rock, I'd recommend a Celestion V30 (Vintage 30) or G12T75.
i bought this amp a couple of days ago and it blew me out. this here isn't the sound of a 6505, it is even better then this, it is great even with single coild pickups
When I tried one at Guitar Center it had a lot of scratch and hiss. I don't usually play loud at GC but the louder the amp got, the more scratch and hiss it had. I was really disappointed.
I just bought this amp. Does anyone know if I can hook this combo up to an orange cab 4x12 and not run into any problems? I'm too broke to buy an actual head!
Yes, this amp has speaker outputs, which means that the combo's own speaker will not be in work. However, you need to remember to make sure you're matching ohms.. You won't have a problem with the watt capacity or load capacity whatever that is.. Cause this is a 60W and I'm pretty sure that an Orange 4x12 can take that easily.
To respond to the "no volume knob" issue,Runenschwert is correct.Just like it sounds, pre gain would be preamp volume (distortion) and post gain is basically a master volume. For high gain at lower volumes turn up pre and lower post.Don't recommend cranking the pre however as the distorion will get mushy. The character of this and other tube amps is to sound it's best when pushing the power tubes...ie:higher post gain setting and usually you will find u can turn down pre gain for clarity and balls
btw whoever wants this amp for METAL keep these facts in mind.
- you HAVE TO play it the max volume on distortion, because there is no volume dial, only pre and post gain, so if you turn both of them down to lower the volume you will lose all your gain and tone therefore sound shit for metal, therefore cannot practice with it at home unless you live on your own in the middle of nowhere!
- the post and pre gain has limits, if you turn them over 4 or 5 you willl get constant feedback.
@MadJack122 Thats bullshit! This amp has the same controls for volume and gain as every other amp too - but here they are called "pre gain" and "post gain".
I play this amp at home and it sounds good at lower volumes. Of course can he "whispering" not create the same "balls" like at higher volumes - but thats the fact of physic and not the fail of this amp. But by his construction (big dimensions, closed back, "fat" speaker), he has at lower vol. more balls than mostly other 12" combos.
@Runenschwert well personally, i play deathcore/death metal/metalcore/metal in general so i need gain :P i HATE weak distortion, it's just so floppy, and that's exactly what happens if you turn the gain down on a tube amp. this amp has NO VOLUME DIAL which is a fucking weird idea, because volume is the most important factor for........any amp ever. don't get me wrong the distortion is amazing on this amp you just need to be at V high gain to have a decent metal tone, i only use this amp for gigs
since the 2x12 version is twice the price what if i ripped out the front of the amp that holds the speaker and replaced that with another that holds 2 speakers?
@ThePleaoftheforsaken Then you would need a new amp because the 1x12 is meant to play through 1 speaker. if you did that it either only play through one speaker or not play at all.
Hey guys, a lot of modern valve amps have a channel volume and master volume, so you can drive it on the channel volume, but not annhilate the neighbours. Does this amp feature such a control?
Man, he couldn't possibly do that. He could loose advertising revenue. Just because it's a guitar magazine doesn't mean it's not run by a board of money grabbing dickless suits.
@TheBlackened117 dang :P nice, im lookin around for one, but i dont have a lot of money :) make doesnt bother me, have you got any ideas for cheap quilted or flame maple top guitars? please
@Gingerlord01 try the lower end LTD models, most of them are flamed maple, and have a pretty damn good sound for the price, its almost a steal. dont go to guitar center though. ive found that most of their stuff (at least the one near me) is either damaged, been played too much for it to be considered a "new" guitar, or just fucked up. so try to find a local dealer, thats small. they take much better care of their stuff, and most of the time, the smaller companies will give you strings and stuff
I HATE THIS GUY!!!! He really does no good to any of the amps he reviews....it's a real shame that they employ this guy for reviews, when he sucks really badly at reviewing gear. I don't mean to troll, but it's impossible not with this guy -_____-
@MrJoemama21 I have tested both, and trust me, you want valveking 212. No matter how you set the knobs on the 6505+ 112 it will always sound way too sharp. Even for metal...
@rcrinlv02 yeah dude go with the 6505 its great for metal and it doesnt have alot of feedback on it or maybe its my guitar but anyway its just a great amp but let me tell you its heavy as hell lol its a real pain in the ass to hual this to band practice but over all great amp
dude this amp kicks ass i waked into guitar center going to get a peavey vyper but then i saw this and icked it up for 600 dollars and its really loud i turned it up to 5 and my house started to shake but it sounds realy good one of the best amps for metal and other heavy styles
@mrfantasticification I actually have the Vypyr 120 Tube 2x12...and...the 6505 sounds awesome on it !! As well , the other amp sims..BUT?!?!...as I've just found out in a jam session.Theres an automated noise gate on it. Very sweet to have it at high volume and no noise.except? So when rollin off your guitrs volume knob, doesnt clear up nice at all, AND?...given the automated noise gate, you have to hit the strings harder. Which pretty much sucks butt !! So , now I'm lookin to get the 6505 combo
couldn't hear the reverb on the reverb demo at all. also gimme a DRY signal for the amp demo!! can't hear the amp's real distortion for the stereo delay.
@TheJDP77 Yes This thing is awsome for small gig venues. When turning it past 6 or so volume it starts to break-up but unless your playing outside or you have a drummer who plays really hard you should be fine. Running a Shure57 infront of it may do the trick aswell. I suggest getting either a Boss NS-2 or ISP ND if your going to use this on the lead channel you can get some serious feedback. Tone is great but I traded mine in and got a Bugera333 halfstack for alittle more versatility.
This was the house amp at the Mountain bar in AC I played last night.. probably the best sound and tone i'v ever gotten playing live. I will be buying this for my next amp hands down.
@guitarpro48 I think alot of people are used to solid state amp wattage. No doubt the thing will get loud but it has absoluty no head room and gets really muddy at high levels. I had this amp it's 60 watts but 60watts of all tube power is pretty loud.
I had this amp for about a year and ran a ibanez ts-9 and isp decimator infront of it. The tone was solid enough for small gigs, jamming around, and I guess you can play with drums/vox/bass and shit at a decent volume. I've recently upgraded to a Bugera 333 120watt head with a marshall 4x12 with celestion v30's and it blows this thing to hell and back.
would this amp be good for gigging? i was originally going for a marshall half stack but i just found this for £450 which i didn't expect, im just wondering if it can handle gig volume?
@phatdoggy440 Rob Balducci plays on Cornford Mk50s. 50 watts, its plenty loud enough. Just need a nice cab to go with it. Paul Guilbert plays on 50 watt 2x12s all the time. Once the amp is mic'd or running over a PA, the watts don't really matter unless you want lots of headroom.
@Xyrium Seriously. Between the PRS SE line at the "Low-Midrange" pricepoint, Carvin at the "High Midrange-to-Professional" (depending on what model you get & how far you option it out) and PRS at the "High Professional" range, I don't see much reason to spend on either an Epiphone (played them back-to-back, found the PRS SE FAR better Singlecut-style guitars) or Gibson proper, which for the most part I feel isn't worth their prices when quality can be so iffy.
@Chad11491 YES - thank you, it's not just me! I think it might be some weird stereo mic'ing technique, but you're 100% right. Why bother producing these videos if that's NOT what it sounds like in real life?
Also, how about a little REVIEW? These are just glowing product demos.
@wowspare I have one and yes, it gets good tone at low volume. When you play live with a band, anything past 4 on the volume has unbelievable harmonicks and the good feedback in all the right places, like it knows when to do it. I really can't figure out why it's only $650 but yeah it's a pro sounding amp.
@GrunesMannchen some people are still learning about amps. this is not an amp for clean sounds. this is a brown sound amp. to be made in china this amp is pretty awesome, but IMO, at least 100.00 over priced. now the amp head version of the 6505+ is one of the best sounding amps IMO on the market.
@ocdist how long has he had em for?? lol i got the 6262 2x12 and its sounds WAY better than the 6505+.. 6262 has a tighter bass and better defined sound, ur friend must have gotten one before they fixed the problems in the summer/fall of 2008.. the only good sounding amp by peavey is the jsx... but thats only my opinion...
Man how is he getting those great lead tones and pinched harmonics? I own this thing and my riffs and stuff sound amazing, but this amp barely registers hammers ons/pull offs and pinched harmonics die in about a second. I know it's not my guitar, because my last amp was a Vypyr and the lead/harmonics were just fine and I'm using a Schecter with EMGs.
@Jewstopher Haha well yeah, but it's like I'm a noob. I've been playing for a while now, I know my stuff, but it doesn't matter because I fiddled around with it more and I got a sound better than the one in the video ;)
@butterknucklez It can get cleaner. This is just an example of something it can do. Its not a great clean by any means but it does get cleaner than this. this is an amp built for ripping your face off.
@butterknucklez You just gotta mess with the amp EQ and the volume knob on your guitar. You can do that on any tube amp though. Just roll back the guitar volume knob to get cleans, and roll it back up for dirty.
@Dom42100 get the peavey (especially for metal tones), the marshall is fuckin shitty IMHO... The speaker seems not to be the best, I tested the MA 50 head on a better box and it was a huge difference!
This is literelly the best amp I ave ever bought... I own the 6505+ stack, a JCM 800 Combo and a jcm 900 combo, and I even have mesa boogie dual rectifier. Best amp I have ever bought was the 6505+ 112.
Paul takes a lot of crap from people on here. I don't know why because he does great demos and the man can flat out play. This btw is the only decent demo of this amp on all of youtube. With the exception of one other guy every other 6505 demo has the gain and treble all the way up and a bunch of boring generic metal riffs.
I tried a 6505+ thead hrough a marshall cab and its cleans sounded 100 times better than this combo amp. I bet if you threw in a celestion or warehouse speaker, this thing would rock.
these reviews are always worthless.
shit paul, get it together

@phatdoggy440 Rob Balducci plays on Cornford Mk50s. 50 watts, its plenty loud enough. Just need a nice cab to go with it. Paul Guilbert plays on 50 watt 2x12s all the time. Once the amp is mic'd or running over a PA, the watts don't really matter unless you want lots of headroom.

You can't review this amp with a guitar like that!! This amp is meant to be used with a metal guitar

That's a sweet Carvin LP.
BTW, just skip to 3:15 folks... :)
Xyrium 1 year ago 51
@Xyrium Seriously. Between the PRS SE line at the "Low-Midrange" pricepoint, Carvin at the "High Midrange-to-Professional" (depending on what model you get & how far you option it out) and PRS at the "High Professional" range, I don't see much reason to spend on either an Epiphone (played them back-to-back, found the PRS SE FAR better Singlecut-style guitars) or Gibson proper, which for the most part I feel isn't worth their prices when quality can be so iffy.
scarred2112 6 months ago
@scarred2112 I agree, I recently purchased a PRS SE Torano and i find it plays, sounds and feels loads better than my Ibanez JEM7V, which is £2000
PRS - £800
JEM7V - £2000
And i prefer the PRS.

does this amp require any sort of noise gate like the 5150 did?

Is this good for crunchy hard rock tones ?? For example AC/DC, Led Zeppelin,
vroobel1989 1 year ago
@vroobel1989 it's a little bit too brutal, i would recommend a marshall head for AC/DC or Zep
HelloDailor 1 year ago
it annoys me how guitar world always has some weird chorus-y sound on all their demos. It does the gear no justice.
Chad11491 1 year ago 67
@Chad11491 YES - thank you, it's not just me! I think it might be some weird stereo mic'ing technique, but you're 100% right. Why bother producing these videos if that's NOT what it sounds like in real life?
Also, how about a little REVIEW? These are just glowing product demos.
intrsoul 1 year ago
@Chad11491
yeah always seems as if they play the crap u dont want to hear through the speaker... its a peavey 6505, i want to hear some metal.. not this bs

hey guys PLEEEEASE answer me!!!
can the 6506 112 combo produce full, crunchy tones even at low volumes? i play at my house so i wanna be able to get good tones at low volumes
wowspare 1 year ago
@wowspare
It's the smallest of the 6505 series. I think it should do it. Make sure to ask in a musicstore or something...
Nyxu 1 year ago
@wowspare I have one and yes, it gets good tone at low volume. When you play live with a band, anything past 4 on the volume has unbelievable harmonicks and the good feedback in all the right places, like it knows when to do it. I really can't figure out why it's only $650 but yeah it's a pro sounding amp.
SJP444 1 year ago
why does every1 say the clean channel sucks? the first clean riff sounded awesome to me
GrunesMannchen 1 year ago
@GrunesMannchen some people are still learning about amps. this is not an amp for clean sounds. this is a brown sound amp. to be made in china this amp is pretty awesome, but IMO, at least 100.00 over priced. now the amp head version of the 6505+ is one of the best sounding amps IMO on the market.
MultiScoffer 1 year ago
does anybody else hear it high volume.. then low volume ...then high volume?
mikoolio777 1 year ago
is it just me or does this amp sound a lot better when other people record themselves playing with this amp on a camera mic
bullsfan93 1 year ago
@ocdist how long has he had em for?? lol i got the 6262 2x12 and its sounds WAY better than the 6505+.. 6262 has a tighter bass and better defined sound, ur friend must have gotten one before they fixed the problems in the summer/fall of 2008.. the only good sounding amp by peavey is the jsx... but thats only my opinion...
MEGATROID114 1 year ago
does it sound good if you play sweet child of mine?? lol
davelee88 1 year ago
@davelee88 no it sounds like shit because of that song
slayer666metalgods 1 year ago
Man how is he getting those great lead tones and pinched harmonics? I own this thing and my riffs and stuff sound amazing, but this amp barely registers hammers ons/pull offs and pinched harmonics die in about a second. I know it's not my guitar, because my last amp was a Vypyr and the lead/harmonics were just fine and I'm using a Schecter with EMGs.

@MrRagnorawk Could he possibly have better technique?
Jewstopher 1 year ago
@Jewstopher Haha well yeah, but it's like I'm a noob. I've been playing for a while now, I know my stuff, but it doesn't matter because I fiddled around with it more and I got a sound better than the one in the video ;)

is that the cleanest sound that amp can make?
butterknucklez 1 year ago
@butterknucklez It can get cleaner. This is just an example of something it can do. Its not a great clean by any means but it does get cleaner than this. this is an amp built for ripping your face off.
frantic29 1 year ago
@butterknucklez You just gotta mess with the amp EQ and the volume knob on your guitar. You can do that on any tube amp though. Just roll back the guitar volume knob to get cleans, and roll it back up for dirty.
DeathMetalAngel123 1 year ago
@butterknucklez coming from a proud owner, yeah pretty much

Dom42100 1 year ago
@Dom42100 haha excactly the same here:P i asked my teacher whats best i'll let u know what his opinion was
saltywoody 1 year ago
@Dom42100 get the peavey (especially for metal tones), the marshall is fuckin shitty IMHO... The speaker seems not to be the best, I tested the MA 50 head on a better box and it was a huge difference!

This is literelly the best amp I ave ever bought... I own the 6505+ stack, a JCM 800 Combo and a jcm 900 combo, and I even have mesa boogie dual rectifier. Best amp I have ever bought was the 6505+ 112.

why does every one hate paul?
shockwavecrisis 1 year ago
Paul takes a lot of crap from people on here. I don't know why because he does great demos and the man can flat out play. This btw is the only decent demo of this amp on all of youtube. With the exception of one other guy every other 6505 demo has the gain and treble all the way up and a bunch of boring generic metal riffs.
SJP444 1 year ago
@SJP444 You do know alot of amps are built you, funnily enough, METAL
KissMeImPunk 1 year ago
@KissMeImPunk and what does that have to do with someone putting the eq knobs on awful settings and playing a generic riff?
SJP444 1 year ago
I tried a 6505+ thead hrough a marshall cab and its cleans sounded 100 times better than this combo amp. I bet if you threw in a celestion or warehouse speaker, this thing would rock.
