    Have you got the rest of the first grade kanji chart? I flunked my end of the year test and have to go to summer school. This is a big help. I want to start 2nd grade before I turn 53. Learning all the kana and 1st grade kanji is a tough 1st year.

  • Kind of a rough translation on the Yomeru Kakeru i suppose.

    First grade kanji 1 (Ichinensei no kanji ichi!)

    Let's learn first grade kanji! (Ichinensei no kanji wo renshuushiyo)

    First, numbers. (Mazu ha, suuji.)

    Can you read it? Can you do it? (Yomeru kana Kakeru kana)

    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 (Ichi, Ni, San, Shi, Go, Roku, Shichi, Hachi, Kyuu, Juu)

  • Next is, size. (Tsugi ha, ookisa.)

    Can you read it? Can you do it? (Yomeru kana Kakeru kana)

    Big, Medium, Small (Dai, Chuu, Shou)

    Next is, direction. (Otsugi ha, houkou.)

    Can you read it? Can you do it? (Yomeru kana Kakeru kana)

    Right, Left, Above, Beneath (Migi, Hidari, Ue, Shita)

  • Next is, nature. (Tsugi ha, shizen.)

    Can you read it? Can you do it? (Yomeru kana Kakeru kana)

    Mountain, River, Tree, Woods, Forest, Flower, Bamboo, Grass (Yama, Kawa, Ki, Hayashi, Mori, Hana, Take, Kusa)

    Last is, body parts (Saigo ha, karada no bubun.)

    Eyes, Ears, Hand, Mouth, Feet (Me, Mimi, Te, Kuchi, Ashi)

  • THANKS! Wow, great! :D I have one question.. I thought those which you list as "above" and "beneath" were "up" and "down"? Are they the same?

  • They can be either. Ue can be above, on top of, up, etc.. Shita can be beneath, under, below, down. etc..

    Japanese is very context sensitive language so it really depends on how it's used. I suppose in hindsight it would make more sense given the context if it were up and down.

  • I suppose it could. Kakeru being by itself and not attached to a verb, I chose to put "Can you do it?" as kakeru tends to mean that something has started or has not yet been done. ~kakeda, ~kekeno, ~kakeru. Of course there is always the chance I'm wrong.

  • I just assumed because yomu is in potential form and at the end of the vid their both in potential short past form. I'm just assuming their in the same form but you might still be right.

  • 'Kaku' means to write. In Japanese to denote ability to perform an action, you remove the 'u' from the end of a regular u-type verb and add eru.

    So kak-u= write

    kak-eru= 'can' write

    Kakeru ka na- Can (you) write (them) or not?

  • ame - first grade go(noon) - second grade go(after) - second grade mae/ato/ushi - second grade tomo/yuu - second grade BTW, this is nowhere near all the kanji for the first grade level. 1st - 80 kanji 2nd - 160 kanji 3rd - 200 kanji 4th - 200 kanji 5th - 185 kanji 6th - 181 kanji
