Hitler was a fool and a terrible strategist, but the German infantry and armor were some of the best trained and most elite soldiers in all of the war.
Most of the German army disliked Hitler, especially after the Russian invasion. People forget that the other side is comprised of real people as well.
Most people don't realize that the Nazis were not the only ones to commit war crimes during WW2. Stalin ordered the executions of millions of people, and the Americans killed millions in bombing raids. War is a terrible thing, and its better to learn about these things so history will not repeat itself.

Not all serving in the SS were criminals, while the SS was, yes, the place for the most elite of the Nazi Germans, not all were guilty of any war crime.

Good film... I too am in a reinacting group, 352nd Infanterie Division to be exact. I understand there are people out there who hate anyone involved on the German side. The point which needs to be understood is that they were fighting for what they knew. My grandfather fought for the American side and fought for the American ideals... because that is all he knew. It doesn't matter what kind of veteran you run across, you need to pay equal respects for what they went through. Good or bad....

My grandfather knew a German war veteran that fought in Stalingrad I think, and the right side of his face had been burnt severely. I think he died around fifteen years ago, may he rest in peace.

It highlights how ludicrous war is because most people are so similar. WW2 was unique because on both defining fronts it was a war of annihilation: Germany-USSR and Anglo/American-Japanese, wholesale butchery, no quarter given or taken. Bad times indeed. This guy was lucky he was captured in the West and the Partisans execute him.

I always forget that there was serious fighting on the Eastern Front from Russia down to the Black Sea. I guess Hollywood has glamorized the Western Front Battles to a point where that's all folks recall when talking of WWII.

The authorities did some research into his background and discovered that he was a Nazi concentration camp officer. He was apprehended by the authorities and was deported. My uncle fought for the German army as well! He was on a vacation in Germany when the invasion took place, and was told he had to fight for the Germans. My uncle on my dads side however, fought for the royal Winnipeg rifles, got 5 medals, and there was a Russian who disappeared at the beginning of the war on my mothers side as well as the German fighter! What is a really cool, is that here is a former german soldier speaking but speaks with, from what I can hear, a perfect american accent. Had to do a double take to make sure I understood the title correctly. I have met many germans and other european immigrants who after many many years living in america and canada, still speak english with the accent of their mother tongue.
Hitler was a fool and a terrible strategist, but the German infantry and armor were some of the best trained and most elite soldiers in all of the war.
Most of the German army disliked Hitler, especially after the Russian invasion. People forget that the other side is comprised of real people as well.

Stalin ordered the executions of millions of people, and the Americans killed millions in bombing raids. War is a terrible thing, and its better to learn about these things so history will not repeat itself.

Good film... I too am in a reinacting group, 352nd Infanterie Division to be exact. I understand there are people out there who hate anyone involved on the German side. The point which needs to be understood is that they were fighting for what they knew. My grandfather fought for the American side and fought for the American ideals... because that is all he knew. It doesn't matter what kind of veteran you run across, you need to pay equal respects for what they went through. Good or bad....

Thank you for sharing this. These witnesses to the greatest conflict in history are fading fast. I love hearing common soldier's tales from all sides. It highlights how ludicrous war is because most people are so similar. WW2 was unique because on both defining fronts it was a war of annihilation: Germany-USSR and Anglo/American-Japanese, wholesale butchery, no quarter given or taken. Bad times indeed. This guy was lucky he was captured in the West and the Partisans execute him.

My uncle fought for the German army as well! He was on a vacation in Germany when the invasion took place, and was told he had to fight for the Germans. My uncle on my dads side however, fought for the royal Winnipeg rifles, got 5 medals, and there was a Russian who disappeared at the beginning of the war on my mothers side as well as the German fighter! The Russian was supposedly a genius, which is why he went missing. Just thought id tell a bit about myself, I know nobody cares, lol.

What is a really cool, is that here is a former german soldier speaking but speaks with, from what I can hear, a perfect american accent. Had to do a double take to make sure I understood the title correctly. I have met many germans and other european immigrants who after many many years living in america and canada, still speak english with the accent of their mother tongue.
