  • Fun fact: the Vikings payed close attention to their hygiene. Look it up.

  • Wish they'd kept a Scandinavian civ in V. I loved using those Berserkers!

  • @AstroAntaAposAnarch There's never a Scandinavian civ in the base game. Just wait for an expansion.

  • @AstroAntaAposAnarch

There's now a Viking DLC for Civ V! :D I hope you enjoy them as much as I've done!

  • Thumbs up if you slammed your hands on your desk when this music played.

  • The person who disliked this obviously got killed by Ragnar in Civ 4.

All those who liked it Know the Epicness of Ragnar

  • i know i'd be scared if thats what i heard when the vikings were coming...

  • @landofthebravefull how is it shocking?

  • 3rd = most epic tune in Civ IV

  • AEre til vikingene!

  • Ragnar will crush your puny civilizations with an iron fist!

  • Viking raids in scotland and Ireland = Norway = Norse

Viking raids on england and France = Denmark = Danes.

Viking exploration and colonization of Russia = Sweden = Swedish Vikings.

Viking exploration and colonization of Iceland = Norway = Norse.

Viking exploration and colonization of Greenland = Iceland = Norse.

Viking exploration and colonization of America = Grenland = Iceland = Norse.

After they all split/ United into kingdoms Denmark, emerged the strongest followed by Sweden.

  • @Catstalker666 Icelanders frequently raided Scotland/Ireland.

  • @lajakl nope Icelanders were explorers and colonists they didnt raid untill later and mostly they would buy slaves from scotland and Ireland and not raid, they came from the norse who were raiders but they often did slave trade. But mostly the raiders were norse.

  • @Catstalker666 Don't forgot about Norman invaders(French speaking vikings) who formed the modern nation of England, Italy(by Sicily/Naples) and many Crusader states.

  • @SwordStriker ah yes correct thx

  • @Catstalker666 Norse does not mean Norwegian, Norse means ancient Scandinavian.

  • @Catstalker666 Yes, but the Norwegian Viking also raided the English and the French, not just the Danes.

  • Sverige!!!!!

  • If you want to be technical, Kiev and Novgorod were viking capitals.

  • @BartzFFXVI actually The Vikings had several capitals because they were split into several kindoms (i.e. the Geats of Sweden) HOWEVER one of the more influential viking capitols was Trondheim (durring the middle ages know as Nidaros for the Cathedral holding Saint Olavs remains) which is in Norway. Birka was another important Viking city which is presently outside Stockholm (Upsala another close town became an important city in the Middle ages and became the religious center for Sweden)

  • Ok Vikings capitol was in Iceland

The most important places of the Vikings were: Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland.

Swedish king founded Denmark, Sweden attacked.

Now, Sweden (who, over the years, has been keeping Denmark in line) is the most powerful country of the Viings.

  • @BartzFFXVI I'm sorry, but that simply isn't historically correct, Denmark, Sweden and Norway were all born at about the same time from smaller Viking Kingdoms.

  • @Ascensiam True. Weren't the Viking raids on England by Norway?

  • @gman8744 yes, some of them was, but Denmark created their own country there once.

  • @gman8744 Most of the Viking raids on England were by the Danes. They came within a whisker of conquering the whole country, it was only because of Alfred the Great that they failed.

The Norwegians tended to focus more on Scotland.

  • @ak981260

True, the Danes controlled three quarters of England and very nearly took Wessex as well. The Anglo-Saxons never did fully take back Mercia or Northumbria, and by the time they were in the position to, we English were invaded by the Normans! :)

And the Norwegain and swedish vikings also went alot further afield than the Danes - they formed the beginnings of Russia by creating the city Kiev with their trade down the Danube, spreading their seed throughout all of europe.

  • @NorseJohn and ak981260 -You two seem to forget the achievements of Sweyn Forkbeard and his son Canute the Great.

  • Denmark didn't "own" Norway until after the Black Death, when all the Scandinavian countries entered the Kalmar Union. The Viking Age ended around 200 years earlier than that...

  • One of the best soundtracks of the game. Definitely gives off a viking feel, and it so makes me want to gear up, get in a boat, and go pillage! :D

  • this game is the best

  • One question: why all the fighting on which country was the best? There wheren't Denmark, Norway and Sweden back then. There where hundreds of tribes that were all vikings.

And lets say one tribe were better then another and you know yourself to come from that one. We don't hold a child responsible for the crimes of his parents so why would we look any different on you for the supposedly "good", "cool" or whatever stuff your ancestors did.

  • @Gladdig Wise words. A man is judge by how he acts rather than how his ancestors acted.

  • @Gladdig They are still called "Danish vikings" and "Swedish vikings". There were also the Danish Axes.

  • I love playing ragnar especially on sea maps, hes absolutely deadly. The UU itself isnt that good, but the fact that you can upgrade it to riflemen and it retains the amphibious is nasty. Basically you've got riflemen with as much as combat 1, cover, city raider 3, AND amphibious attacking straight from galleons with 6 or 7 movement points (you get a free navigation upgrade, plus circumnavigation, plus navigation 2 if you have good exp on them).

  • ppl, it doesnt matter if they were Swedes, Nords,or Danes! they were all Vikings! they all were awesome! i am a Dane myself, but i won't choose sides.

  • @Selenagomezbigfanguy the entire scandinavia was vikings, there's no scandinavian being more viking than the other.

  • I am EEEKTAVIUS! Scourge of the waters of Florida! Berserkang and Wanderlust! Rawrrrrr!

  • what's the stuff youre smoking? sounds good.

  • Sweden and Norway is technically former danish provinces.

  • Yeah, but they chose norwegian didnt they?? Because the norwegian vikings are most famous, being the first europeans on iceland, greenland and america!

  • well, famous isnt synonymous with strongest or most active.

And you are mentioning discoveries only, tell me of a civilization that cant take a boat and sail some hundreds of kilometers into open sea?

While norwegian suffered bitter defeat at Stanford, the danes created their own country, danelaw, heard about it?

    Stop being so hostile.

  • Well, they may say that vikings were barbarians, but they were the ones (the norwegians) who didnt belive that they would be eaten bye monsters at the end of the world.

    Stop acting like a "besserwisser"

  • You arent answering my questions, dont start talking about something else because my arguments pwns your pants off.

  • By that logic, the Swedish Vikings deserve more credit than any others. The Danes created a short-lived state in England, but Swedish Vikings created Kievan Rus, the forerunner to Russia. It survived until the 13th century, far longer than the Danelaw. To this day, Kievan Rus is seen as the first Russian state. "Rus" was even the name attributed to the Swedish Vikings, and "Russia" comes from that. The largest country in the world is still named after them. The Danes have nothing on that.

  • you cant really take the honor for that, russia is independent and you have nothing to say about that.

  • @iffysam Don't forget the norwegian vikings. They founded a northern atlantic spanning colonial "empire" of sorts, from Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland and the many islands north of Scotland. In terms of sea faring technology, nobody could match them as a marine power at their apex.

  • @PoddaJawada How could there be Norwegian Vikings? Denmark owned Norway.

  • I bet none of you knew but actually the Danes were the most dominante of all the Vikings. They used to own Norway and Sweden. And they still beleive that the rest of scandinavia shuold be theirs! Anyway the Norweagen raids on Scotland and Ireland became the most famous because of the brutality. The Danes led raids on England and Western Europe. The Sweds went east into Russia.

  • "they still beleive that the rest of scandinavia shuold be theirs"

hehe, as a Norwegian i welcome hem to try, but we would kick their asses.

the only things Denmark are famous for here are.

    a) having been assholes for centuries and having taken advantage of us after the black death.

    b) cheep beer.

    c) annoying accent.

    d) amusement parks.

the Norwegians weakened the Britons enough so that William the conqueror could take over England in 1066.

Norway discovered both Greenland and America.

  • @evilblades lol agreed. But the strongest pf all scandanavia now i think is Finland, Norway, Sweden, then Denmark.

  • Valid points ... but you may find that people were already in Greenland and America ... they discovered it thousands of years before.

  • all lies, i am pretty sure the vikings brought the "natives" to Greenland and America ;-)

  • And Iceland :D

  • you are either racist or extremely uneducated.

And the accent thing is quite funny, i find Norwegian accent extremely odd.

And what would you do without high quality danish beer? You can't grow any yourself.

  • the government taxes alcohol and everything way too much, which is why we all travel by boat to Denmark to buy your beer<3 :P

for instance i spent almost 300kr on beer last Friday, and that was the cheapest beer we have, about 10nok for every 0,3 bottle.

one liter of cider, 4,5% costs over 60nok. :P

regarding 1#. the time under the Danes is here known as "the 400 year night."

If that is any indication for how we feel about it :P

we couldn't even have our own constitution until 1814.

  • Well, i for sure didnt have any influence on the 200 year old kings of Denmark, i am an ancestor of the danes from that times. Its important not to blame newer generations for what their ancestors did.

  • The tribe know as the Kievan Russ went into Russia. Figure the rest out.

  • I dont believe scandinavia should be danish, nor does any of my friends, or theirs, go figure.

  • Actually, Norwegians went to iceland and scotland, danes went to england, and swedes went to russia.

    To kick ass, that is.

  • Then you mayy also happen to know that the population of scandinavia wasn't vikings, vikings was a term to describe raiders travelling from scandinavia, and not the population itself, which generally concludes that you cannot point out any country to associate with vikings specifically.

  • It doesn't matter who went on vikings raids the most, it matters who went on viking raids at all. That is why the civilization is called the vikings, or they would just have called it norway, also, if you found alot of cities, you will get names like Jelling, Aarhus, Ribe, Stockholm, and Roskilde.

  • Comment removed

  • That is not true at all. Every civilization has it's most important city as it's first, and the second most important and so on.

Like Athens and Sparta, Moscow and St. Peterburg, and so on.

  • Thats like choosing the most important city for France, Germany and Russia! 3 countries!

  • That does not make sense.

Please build up a cohesive sentence.

  • THAT does not make sense!

  • That's what i said, now write your arguments properly.

  • This is getting too fucking stupid! Im outta here!

  • Because it was the british and scots who wrote most of the history around this and the norwegians went to brittain most. Keep in mind the danes where there too thoguh just not as much or as organised. Instead the danes and "götarna" meaning the west south swedish people went to france and a little bit everywhere in the west europe even making small kingdoms in italy. The more famous swedes "svearna" went east to conquer and raid finland, russia and even down to the east romans.

  • @Gladdig

RUSSIA!!! i thought the slaves were in russia at the time...

  • The slavs was there too ofcourse. But Svearna started small kingdoms there, many where slavs where allowed but not put as high in the hierarchy. One example of this was Novgorod (nygård). :P

  • Then why do the viking empires units in civ speak norwegian. Buuuurn!

  • they had to pick a language, they couldnt speak interlingua for christs sake.

  • in Norwegian "viking" can still easily be interpreted as "someone from a vik (river inlet))"

a place a few miles from me is called "viken" (the river inlet)

basically viking means "someone living by an river inlet". it became synonymous with Scandinavian.

  • @kjartanx the only actual invasion in England from Norway was the one with The Batlle of Stamford bridge. All the rest were Danish. U ever heard of Danelaw? yeah, they even made their own country there.

  • The civilization isn't called Norway.

Vikings were from Scandinavia, not just Norway.

  • Vikings got around. We all prolly have a fair share of Norse blood in you if you are European, North African, or Middle Eastern

  • The last is among my favorites, it is so epicly epic.

PS: If there's another expansion for Civ IV, the new Viking leader would be either Canute the Great or Eric Bloodaxe.

  • And now I'm playing as Ragnar on an archipelago map, enjoying the benefits of the trading post.

  • I don't think this music don't match to Norwegian vinkings at all! The first half sounds more chinese than Vinking.

  • Who's talking about Norway? The civilization is called the Vikings, and Vikings are from Iceland, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

  • Once when I played in Warlords this guy got squeezed between me (China) and Russia, but he became a quick ally and he was able to contribute to a late war against Germany (well, EVERYBODY was at war with him, though nobody helped him capture his one city). Oh, and despite a financial trait he was always a few techs behind him. He was in my last game in BtS as well, but I kicked his royal butt with praetorians in the classical age.

  • I loved the first version, what with the intermittent "MMHHH" and "UUNNGGH"

But yes, the others are better.

  • @NukeSocks I know! XD

    "UGABUGABU! *clap*"

After a while they sound like they're speaking Klingon. o.o

  • i just love this guy XD as a friend he is a sworn war ally, and as an enemy he is definately one to keep an eye on XD imo he is far more dangerous than that idiot psychozuma or shaka, since he just waits until ur main forces are at war somewhere else (usually when that fool psychozuma wants war again) Ragnar FTW!!!!

  • dude, i have Norwegian ancestors, so in a way, i'm a Cajun Viking!

  • Norse were/are germanic, not celtic.

  • This music is so epic! It makes me think in the phrase "The Apocalypse is coming" (specially from 1:34 - 3:06) I actually know that the Vikings believed in an Apocalypse called Ragnarok (See the resemblance between Ragnar and Ragnarok!).

  • Where's Montezuma's theme?

  • Love the second one.

  • I like Gimli. He is always good for bribing him into war with your enemy. I swear - never declare war to anyone until you know this little dwarf is busy in some conflict himself, else you may be overrun by infantry too soon!

  • Hey do u think u can put Pacal's theme up.

  • rofl 1st one is medieval white ppl rap from a thousand years ago

  • i agree the first one sounds horrible

  • This is soooo badass.

  • I don't know what modern rap sounds like, but I hope to god this is at least better then that sort've junk.

  • yeah the second one is alot better than this one. its more like music not so much of this plucking and hitting sound

  • This theme is awesome

  • My ancestors were Vikings! This Soundtrack is awesome!

  • My ancestors were Vikings! ^__^ Yay Me!

  • That is really cool, but, don't get me wrong, who do you know that?! I mean, Vikings were back into the 800's!

  • It's not very easy to explain how I know some of my ancestors were vikings. And if I did take the time to explain it, you'd probably not get it anyway. Oh, by the way, on the other side of my family, We're related to the 18th president too.

  • ok, wow, famous family... (BTW, you mean Ulysses S. Grant ?)

  • Yeah, Ulysses S. Grant. Wow, I even have the same last name too.. And he liked whiskey and got mad real easily from what I've heard, my grandma likes whiskey and gets mad a lot..

  • cool.. (BTW you really should stick to only one name man =P)

  • O rly? Cool. I'm realted to the Harrison's.

  • I've got a book that has been in my family that shows all my ancestors from the 800's to 1993.

Both sides of the family, my mothers side even includes some Irish King named Boru

  • For some reason Youtube doesn't reply correctly anymore..I was refering to someone mentioning their viking heritage, and those books are about -my- viking heritage, a lot of people have 'em in Iceland.

  • I've read that all (or most or a lot of) the people are descendants from famous people, my dad claims that he is descendant from Ferdinand the Catholic (King of Spain and husband of Isabella -The same Isabella who appears in this game-) but I don't believe him.

  • Well those people had families 500 years ago, and those families had families with non nobility.

It's hard -not- to be related to someone that's nobility or famous or even infamous.

  • realy good soundtrack of civ IV

    good game to
