  • Disney has become a monopoly of the mouse and commercialized..... all the thoughts, imagination, and future thinking has been demolished. .... I miss the Epcot that cared about roadways for our future, the way we looked at health and the body, and also about imagination...... kiss our memories goodbye : (

  • Damn i was about 4 when this was torn down. I wish i could have seen it. The artwork and scenery above all else looks AMAZING!

  • I owe a large part of my personal creativity to my childhood experiences with these kinds of Disney rides. It's disheartening to see Disney think it has to be like other parks, with flashy, ADHD-inducing thrill rides being the norm. I wish it would return to the days when it was not adrenaline that the rides stimulated, but the natural imagination, wonder, and curiosity of a child.

  • THEY CLOSED HORISONS!!! NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  • "Shame on you Disney"? Lol It was attractions like Horizons that hurt Epcot Center in the first years after it opened. This was why Epcot was considered the "Boring Park" So Disney got smart and replaced it with Mission Space. It's the same reason why Test Track replaced World of Motion. And Soarin' replaced The Land. They were B-O-R-I-N-G. The people spoke and Disney listened.

  • @fattyboomboom54 I'm sorry but I don't agree. I am glad that they brought soarin' and test track, but I do NOT think that any of these ORIGINAL rides are boring in anyway at all...

  • @Mandimaemoo well you are in the minority because most people thought they were boring. When you pay $50. to go to a theme park you don't want a history lesson, you want THRILLS. That's what Epcot Center was lacking and thats why those attractions are gone. And by themselves they aren't exactly boring, but side by side with the attractions that replaced them, they kind of are.

  • It's Kool To See People Searching For Horizons Epcot ... My First Visit Was 1987...It Broadened My ..."Horizons" ;o) Checkout My Channel As Well As Myspace..."If We Can Dream It...We Can Do It"

  • Easily the best original ride at EPCOT from 1983-1999.

  • OMG this was my favorite...thanks for the memoirs

  • God how i miss old disney world and old disney rides, the new ones, and “refurbished” ones are just not magical to me. i am so mad, and heartbroken they got rid of the old rides and shows, why couldn't they just build new stuff elsewhere, like in another state!

  • at 3:45 it looks like a space mountain door

  • man this was open when i was little i was just to little to remember it i wish they wodnt get rid of this!

  • i see disney world being closed down for good in the future over an economic collapse

  • I went to Disney World on my honeymoon in March 1987 and this was my favorite ride. We would stay til late in the evening right before the park closed and you could ride and choose one destination turn right around ride again (no lines!) choose the next and then the next, it was a blast.

  • why did they close this? it was a work of art--a sci-fi masterpiece. i loved this ride as a child.

  • was this in the golf ball?

  • @mollyemily09 Different ride! The golf ball (Spaceship Earth) ride has been preserved pretty well. This is where Mission Space lives today.

  • it was supposed to represent what was to come in the 21st century but by the time t was 1999 and we weren't even close, they probly just said "FORGET IT" XD

  • I miss this ride!!!!

  • I am too young to have experienced Horizons, but MAN I wish I did!!! Spaceship Earth was my favourite ride as a child, and this reminds me of it. It looks amazing~!

  • This was such a cool ride. I miss smelling the oranges! :)

  • People just don't care about this kind of stuff anymore!

  • @mikeg642000 that is so true. people used to have not only interest, but passion in the advancement in science and technology. now it is ignored, even at times viewed as frighting or uninteresting. it's not only a great time in human history to embrace science and technology, but also a very bad time not to.

  • rides like Horizons and Motion where of the EXCELLENT rides that made Epcot different, creative and nothing short of amazing, I don't understand why they destroy them, if they have problems they should just upgrade them, they have the space to build more rides like test drive and mission to mars, IS A GOOD THING Michael Eisner isn't in charge anymore, is also sad to see how they took out the submarines in WDW

  • this was really futuristic at the time

  • The real shame about this ride is that it was the "premier" Epcot ride when Epcot first opened. However, I think the ride became a bit "outdated" for many people, particularly the view of the future was far different from the reality that transpired. However, I always loved this ride and will miss it.

  • I don't know why they have to close rides like this one. Instead of replacing them they should just add new ones. Also very sad that the skyway and people mover are gone

  • @Bondianwolf had huge foundation problems and there was a sink hole believe it or not so they had to close it down......:( actually had to evacuate the building at one point.....Not sure if someone posted that uet or not but to answer your "Q"

  • @ddcgod Actually the sinkhole theory was not true at all.The fact was that the ride was not pulling in the amount of guests that management wanted at the time. A plan had been drawn up to update the ride but Eisner did not want to put up the money for it. Instead he opted for Mission Space and they opened that up instead.

If there was a sinkhole, then mission space would be on it too and that wouldnt make any sense

  • There are definitely some good deals at the moment, I picked up a lot of info from bestvaluethemeparks (.) com

  • yawn

  • I remember this ride and thought that the 'future' they portrayed would be the real future: living in space etc. I think they shut these rides down because some of what they predicted did come true, like communicating face-to-face over the internet. So, it really isn't the future anymore, just the present. :)

  • i liked this ride :( i miss it! i was 10 when it closed and remember the first time i went on it (at the age of 2) i was stood up the whole way through coz in parts as a little kid i couldnt see what was below eye level and i was rather nosey. this meant that the ride stopped repeatedly while the operators checked there were no problems and that i wasnt going to fall out of the carridge! and everytime we went on a ride after this one, id ask my mum 'do you get to press buttons on this one' lol

  • what ride replaced this

  • @zdog1994 Test Track

  • @zdog1994 My bad I meant Mission Space, Test Track replaced World of Motion lol.

  • @zdog1994 Mission Space

Its theme song is the Space theme in this movie! The wheel that the Mom and Kid are on in the Space portion is in the line for the ride. I think it was an improvement because lots of the stuff in here did come true.

  • man this ride looks pretty cool, too bad i was never on it.....Hopefully the Stitch ride will be on vanished world of disney soon, such a bad ride, its not even a ride

  • I really miss this attraction as well, but if you think about it, Spaceship Earth is "kind of" the same thing. Maybe that's why they closed it. I'm glad I got to experience this a couple of times before it shut down.

  • this was always one of my favorites, I loved this ride

  • Thanks for posting this - I LOVED this ride. Very good for really small children - and lasted a LONG time so you could rest!

  • I am at that age where I can just remember horizons, I know I loved this ride.

  • Thought this was called the carousel of time?

  • "Carousel of Progress" is in the Future World section of the Magic Kingdom. Horizons was in Epcot

  • tomorrowland

  • @cristelvideo Also it is one of the Original Disney inventions made by the man himself.

  • @cristelvideo It's in Tomorrowland. Future World is an Epcot term.

  • @BucketheadLS1 - sorry to have to correct you but Horizons was definitely a ride in the Future World section of Epcot. It closed in 1999, was demolished and the locationwas then re-used for Mission Space.

  • @cristelvideo - I apologise BucketheadLS1 - I thought you were referring to the loaction of Horizons.

You're correct Carousel of Progress was in Tomorrowland

  • @cristelvideo Just saw this...thanks.

  • @cristelvideo Carousel of Progress IS in Tomorrowland. We just went in there

July 4, 2011 and its the same as it was in 1995.

  • @cristelvideo I am referring to Carousel.

  • @hector2282 it was a sequel to Carousel of Progress

  • rode this in xmas of 97' damn I feel old

  • I went on this ride in 1985, and then again in 1989. It hadn't changed, but I know a lot of future space concepts had, so, by 1989, the ride was a bit dated...to imagine that it was still going in 1989..meant a refurbishment/redo was in progress..and c'mon.. Test Track replaced it..how cool is that?

  • Horizon's was my favorite ride growing up, I really miss the desert area that smelled like oranges, the undersea part and getting to pick how the ride ended

  • OOOOH!

Gosh I feel like an idiot now T.T

  • They've taken the idea of picking the ride ending and put it inside Spaceship Earth with the last renovation.

  • @farside41 pick how the ride ended? do explain.

  • @CeletialDarkness at the end of the ride you could choose one of four (I think) endings, In Space, under the sea, can't remember the other two

  • @cristelvideo It was just three: land, sea, and space. It went along with the theme of the different colonies/futuristic cities shown in the ride. Thanks for posting!

  • @farside41 yea they kinda added that to spaceship earth the last time i was there. Its a little different but it remeinded me of that. i know what youre talking about.

  • @farside41 I was 9 when this ride closed and I was SO mad as a kid. This was my favorite ride as well. Disney seems to redo or get rid of all the rides I once loved so much.

  • @farside41 Hahaha! Oh my gosh! I remember the smell of oranges too!!! I loved getting to pick the end of the ride too. Great great ride.

  • I dont think I ever made it on this ride when I was little, but I do remember the opening of Test Track. This seems like It would be another Spaceship Earth type of ride and I'm honestly glad they changed it into Test Track.

  • Horizon's didn't turn into Test Track, Test Track used to be the World of Motion. Horizon's turned into Space. Horizons was awesome, but if you don't like Spaceship Earth you probably wouldn't have liked it...

  • They changed Horizons to Mission: Space. You're thinking of World of Motion.

  • The main reasons that Disney closed this ride down was because there was a sinkhole under the building. They repared this and made the land stable so that they could put in Mission: Space.

And lets be real. I never went on Horizons, so I'm sure that it was a great ride, but Mission: Space is much much more popular and thrilling. EPCOT needed a thrill ride.

  • This would have been a more accurate vision of the future if all the animatronic characters were 50 pounds overweight....

  • they close the best rides because of their sponsors pulling the plug which totally sucks I miss horizons it was one of my favorites along with Journey into Imagination the original

  • Well, since this is a vision of the future, it has already changed. 16 years is a big gap when you think of how fast technology changes. Thats why tomorrowland changes, even though it is meant to resemble a time that has not happened yet. It makes sense that it would be a show to change or go down.

  • the carrosel of time is better than this

  • I loved Horizons just as much as I loved the old Journey Into Imagination. Every time they upgrade, they end up downgrading. Sad.

  • Straight to my childhood!

  • I do miss vintage Epcot, but I enjoy the new stuff too. I wish they could both exist.

  • Why do they always have to close the best rides?

  • Rode it once. It was pretty neat

  • My wife LOVED this ride. She was bummed when it closed.

  • I went to Disney in 1990 when I was about 8 and I just went back this year for the first time. Epcot was a real disappointment. They have taken out so many great attractions but they haven't replaced them with anything very interesting (except Soarin). Thanks for saving the classics for posterity.

  • what is currently at Epcot center bares no resemblence to the magic it was in the 1980s. Spaceship Earth only remains. and i am told tehy finally altered that one too.

  • I agree - if you want to see what WD wanted in EPCOT - check out books on the NY World's fair in 1964. WD produced 3 rides, and teh Fair was a mini-EPCOT type place.

  • I too remember the oranges. Despite all the other cool stuff in the park, that is the one thing I think about when I recall my time there 15 years ago. It was AWESOME.

  • I've seen the desert farm stage every day of my life since I went on that ride when I was a kid.

  • Parts of this ride remind me of the Carousel of Progress, but I still like Horizons better. :)

  • I remember the smell of the oranges at the 'farm' part, right before the underwater scene...I can still smell them :)

  • Well, seeing as how complex this ride was, I can see how it was probably too much to maintain. I remember when the boy said "Look, Mom I'm flying!"...Aw

  • ...They got rid of this ride?...All that hard work. I think any kid would have been fascinated to see the work done by imagineers from decades ago. I wonder what they do with all the materials...

  • I think some of it was moved to that ride in tommorow land skyway that went into Space mountain and some other rides, it is now closed for ANOTHER remodeling, a looonnnnggg time ago, I recognize the some of the salon stuf, but I wonder if it'll still be there after they finish remodeling.

  • Thanks for the reply

aw, well that's pretty cool if some of the sets at least get a new place to be. It better still be there afterwards hah, I wanna go again! I think it would be interesting if they had some collection of pieces and videos or something of previous rides--like a museum. It's a shame it is. Quite a lot of attractions gone even before I was born, wish I saw those too

  • What replaced it?

  • Mission Space.

  • They thought this was the 21st centruy?! haha nice try disneyy

  • I guess I can understand why they would close this ride. I guess the idea was it showed the 21st century from a 1980s perspective. They could have updated the ride like they did with SE, but with this ride that would have meant a MAJOR overhaul and it just wouldn't have been the same.

  • I remember the smell of oranges on this ride, it's the thing that stuck out the most other than the video you get to pick I would always pick the underwater one lol

  • Hey, I remember picking a video too, I thought I made that up, neat!

  • Haha nope you didn't make it up! It was so awesome! It had like 6 buttons infront of you and the same 6 infront of the person next to you I would always go with my Mom so she let me choose lol.

  • carousal of change or W/E is what that reminds me of

  • I think I have been on it before, not to sure. Looks really cool

  • I loved those rides!!! When I went I was 10 and this is the sort of ride I remember well...

  • Ummmm.... What does this have to do with Horizons?

  • And how does a father burn a grave and then the kid comes to life again?

  • Why are ALL my favorite rides from my childhood CLOSED?!??!?! This is just not right! :(

  • I really do miss this ride, it was a fun and interesting portrayal of the future, predicted from the view of folks in the 80's. I understand why they closed it, since some of the things in the ride have become reality now and others are just ridiculously out of reach. Personally, I would have kept it as a memento.

  • besides the build ing was sinking on itself and it would have to be gone by now anyway

  • i loved this ride, to bad they couldnt of kept it and just fixed it up

  • i remember this I was only like 10 when it closed but I used to love these old disney rides. They were better than what they have now... well kind of lol when I was little I used to love these and I would love my kids to enjoy this old disney too. But now that I'm older I love the big rides they have now.But to me these rides were more family oriented. If you wanted to ride 'scary' rides or 'grown-up' rides go to Universal or something. lol

  • This ride always seemed to have a citrus smell while riding.

  • it sure did! while you rode through the orange groves! to this day, every time i smell and orange, i think of horizons.

  • This must be the attraction parodied in Batman: Mask of the Phantasm at the Gotham World's Fair. Haha Joker.

  • it wouldve been increedibly to actually live in disney- It makes me so sad, all the things people find wrong with disney nowadays...

  • For those who don't know why it's just Epcot insted of Epcot Center now? A Bus Driver told me when I visited a few days back. Epcot used to be at the center of Disney World, but when Animal Kingdom came along, it threw everything on the map out of whack and the actual heart of the park is elsewhere

  • So it was like spaceship earth or was it the original spaceship earth?

  • I totally remember this...forgot what it was called but as soon as I saw the video I remembered it. Thanks for sharing!

  • this ride looks so cool i was 3 when they took it off bnut my parents didnt take me to disneyland untill i was 4 or 5 it was when they opened disney californai adventurer man they should of taken me b4 cause this ride looks so awesome

  • I was 5 when i saw this and i really remember it vividly. i was sad when we came back years later and this ride was no more :( it really amazed me at the tme.

  • If we can dream it, we really can do it.....

Check out Horizons1 (dot) com for an amazing tribute w/ music & vids. I really miss this attraction :(

  • I loved this ride. I always wanted to get out of the vehicle and go into the scenes and look around lol. They all seemed so realistic.

the new EPCOT rides seem so cartoonish compared to the originals.

  • I like Mission Space (The ride that replaced Horizons), but I liked Horizons better. This was such a classic view of the future and it was part of what made Future World at EPCOT so great. Oh, and to answer a couple other comments, it's just called EPCOT now, not Epcot Center.

  • Thank you!! I miss this ride so much. I remember riding this many times in a row. :) One of the best rides ever!!! I'm sad they took it away.

  • I remember the part from 1:20 - 1:45 it always smelled like oranges!

  • yes I remember that orange smell. The citrus scented glade air fresheners smell the same way

  • I remember this. I saw it in '84. It's not called EPCOT center anymore? What is it called now?

  • its just called EPCOT now

  • It's simply Epcot (lower case). It used to be E.P.C.O.T. Center or something like that with the letters meaning Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow. They got rid of that title though and simply call it Epcot because it is not the E.P.C.O.T. that Walt had envisioned (an actual city where people would live).

  • Thanks, Servo

  • i remember this they also built a replica of this ride in another park i think thanx so much 4 these vids

  • I love all of your comments. This was my favorite Disney ride. I'm sort of a nerd I guess, but Epcot (When it was called EPCOT Center) has always been my favorite. The rides were charming, fun, AND educational. I've seen it change as I've been going there pretty much since I was born. Today...virtually nothing is left of the original future world...I guess Spaceship Earth is the closest...but even that has changed significantly...and no more "tomorrow's child" song. Thanks for this post!

    ~Luke

  • thanks so much for posting this. i used to love this one. such happy memories.

  • Is it just me or do some of the voice over's seem kind of... Random? That being said, this looks like it was a wonderfully charming old school Disney ride. Shame it's no longer around, it seems a bit, dare I say... More exciting than Spaceship Earth. I also have to ponder if Disney had to pay royalties for using the "Happy Birthday" song, as I'm pretty sure it's still copyrighted material.

  • This film can only suggest just how wonderful this ride was. Like the optimistic future it promised, it has been abandoned.

  • I never got to ride this ride because I was only 6 when this ride closed and I wasn't really interested in EPCOT at the time. But, I wish that the building wasn't found structurally unsafe so it was still there and that I could ride it.

  • It wasn't closed for being structurally unsound. Disney builds everything to withstand a category 4+ hurricane. General Electric was secretly purchased by the French government, and chose not to continue the sponsorship. Epcot was originally shared the cost with corporations.

  • Oh,my God! I forgot about the panel options! Thanks so much and keep posting lost Disney World attractions. I missed this ride too and I can remember sitting there and what a rush of memories from my first trip. The imagineers are so talented. I was wondering if anyone knew what happens to certain attractions once they are removed. Are they stored for posterity or merely destroyed and thrown away?

  • Wow, all of the rides that have closed down all seem so charming. Is there something wrong with that?

Some of us want a nice ride that we can take our time to enjoy and that isn't pumped with 50 red bulls.

  • I was born in 1999 no ride for me then

  • Remeber the smell of oranges over the farm? MMMMMMM!

  • Thanks a lot! this really made my day!

  • i love this ride at epcot - i went on it both times i went to WDW.

  • From 2:23-2:36, that scean reminds me of Sealab 2020 (or 2021), especally that one kid right next to the seal who had his arms in that position. OF couse this ride was made around the 1980s.

This ride looks so great :). I wonder why they had to shut it down.

  • "especally that one kid right next to the seal who had his arms in that position." I belive he was also called Doliphin boy in Sealab 2021.

Also, I'm now intrested about the "chose your own ending" thing that this ride had.

  • The choose you own ending went as follows:

In the car you were in, there was a panel of buttons in the front (I forget what the options were, I'm sorry) Towards the end of the ride, they lit up and you chose one. After that, panels on either side of the car went up (to block out what the person next to you chose, I guess. At that point you were facing sideways and could easily see what your neighbor picked) It then showed a video of whatever ending you picked.

  • I think the options were Space, under water, and desert or mars smoething like that.

  • If I remember correctly, the cars held 4 riders sitting side by side, and each pressed his/her button to 'vote' on which ending you'd see (majority wins). I was with my friend, we chose different endings, then he reached over and pushed the buttons on the 'empty' seats so I had to sit through HIS ending. Grrrr.

  • So, is it like a "good/bad" ending or is it simply press a button and or something?

  • It was more like choosing a future environment to travel through -- space, land, under-the-sea -- that you voted on.

  • Horizons was closed down because General Electric ended sponsorship and no other sponsor could be found.

  • i have alwaus wanted to go on this ride!!!!!

i remember having this disney attraction ride book, and the pictures of this ride looked really interesting

  • is this the ride where you went sideways throughout it

  • Yes, you could choose one of three or four endings.

  • You know you should contact Ken Larson. He is a former model maker that worked on the Horizons models while at Universal Hartland. He has the videos on his website but they are locked. Perhaps you can convince him to post them. His site is...Kesigndesign com

  • I just want to tell you how much you posting this video means to me. This was one of my favorite rides as a child, my mother's as well. We went on it all the time, and when it closed, we were so disappointed. It was like loosing an old friend. I've been there more than 15 times, and I am almost 21 years old.

This is one of my favorite videos of Disney I've seen.

I actually cried after seeing this. I missed it so much!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

  • brought back memories thanks!!

  • I actually remember this but I never knew what it was. I was probably 10 when I rode this and I just went back to Disney World this year, and now I am 19.

  • where was this ride, please let me know

  • it was in epcot back in 1983,but was removed in 2000 due to structural problems. I had the pleasure of riding this ride, and it was an awesome one. pity they don't have it anymore.

  • This looks like a well made ride, but I couldn't see myself riding it more than once or twice and I must not have been the only one if they took it out

  • No offense to the people who liked this ride, but i'm getting bored just watching this video ^^;

  • Disney was a HUGE part of my childhood. I wish they would keep great stuff like this (but then again, this generation isn't about LEARNING, it's about being entertained. Geez). Remember the days where we might actually, God Forbid, learn something!??!??

  • 'cause heaven forbid we go to a theme park to be entertained

  • disney used to be able to entertain and educate at the same time. Take me for example. When my brother and I were little, we rode horizons and all sorts of other science related (now replaced) rides. We were immensely entertained and learned stuff at the same time, not to mention create a million memories. To see things like that being so easily replaced is heartbreaking.

  • Completely agreed. Epcot was my favorite Disney park because I really felt like it made me use my imagination (no pun intended), unlike the other Disney parks which were based on characters that I was never really into.

  • Disney made a huge mistake removing Horizons. Epcot will never be the same. I sure do miss this ride.

  • LOVED THIS RIDE

  • Gosh, I rode this ride like 4 times in one night..I just love the smell of the oranges and the rocket scence at the end..This was my favorite ride in epcot. Sad to see it gone.

  • my sister and i loved horizons!! disney has taken away some of the best attractions of all time, but thankfully have replaced them with some great ones.

    thanks, guys.

  • This taught kids that in the future everyone will live on 1970's Star Trek sets and fight with their spouse over video conference.

  • We just got back from Disney World and enjoyed Mission Space, but I definitely miss Horizons. Does anyone remember the theme song? I loved it and still have it on CD--If we can dream it then we can do it.

  • OMG my sister rode that before but i didnt i wish i could ride it my sister said its a good ride

  • Part of the reason it closed was because of the structure of the building.

  • Sequel to my favorite attraction, the Carousel of Progress.

  • my favorite part of this ride was the orange fields. I always just took in a deep breath b/c of the fresh smell of oranges

  • they are refurbishing spaceship earth??!!??
