My grandad lived in Stretford and as a child I visited several summers in the 70s. When we went into the city proper we'd pass the bullrings and they looked both like some sort of sci-fi set and intimidating. I recall many of my family telling me how dangerous the area compared to my suburban Chicago home. These pics bring a new level of despondence my memories didn't have. lol
Wow! what a trip back to memory lane! I remember the bull rings going up, and there sinking !!! I lived just behind the Grants arms on Lupton Walk. It still amazes me that rockdove, Humamby and i forget the otherone are still standing! Oh and just to let you know... My brother and I stripped the the lead of Leaf St baths just before they got demolished :D
my best friend lived in nelson terrace we went to school together,we also went to a milk bar in brooks bar, so happy in them days, her name was norma,
i lived in hulme, i was born in 1945 i used to go to the pop cinema on a satday , i also went to the wycliffe we moved house in the50s into fallowfield, also frequented the pubs you mentioned such lovely memories thank you,
Hi all Hulme people out their, I wish you all well. I was born in the old Hulme
Junction St in 1951,where the Junction Brewery stood at one end and Vine st school stood at the other. My father Rest His Soul, used to frequent the Junction Pub at the weekends. As kids we used to pile in to the Pop cinema on a saturday to watch the matinee's. The Wycliffe Cinema was just down the road. I could go on and on. HAPPY DAY'S.
i was only 10 years old when i used to go around collecting money for my dad who had coal buisiness in thia area . music is bringing my childhood back
My Aunt lived on Vine St. Remember the Wycliffe Cinema, Sports Depo and when then flattened Old Hulme for the disaterours Cresecents and deck acess flats with their international breed of cockroach infestation, British American and German.
Even worked at Birley High where my pupils achieved 100% A-C in their GCE
Nice work Kevin, if you view the picture of Birley High school and pause it, you will notice that the crecents aren't there ! ie; Robert Adam, Charles Barry and so on.
Therefore this particular picture was taken September 1967.
Also, those prefabs were demolished in July '96 - the last bit to go. Those decks on the left of the pic used to have a bit of graffiti on it saying "Free Kuwait," next to which somebody else had daubed "With Tiger Tokens!"
6:14 is Bonsall St. That's the 80 bus from Chorlton, going to Middleton. The 82 used to go up here too, to Oldham via Failsworth The only bus that goes up there now is the 86: Chorlton - Piccadilly. There's nothing on that road now until the bridge (in shot)!
Excellent!! photos of Hulme I lived at Peatfield walk on Arnott crescent and went to the Holy Name School. Great times born 1966. We would run around Epping walk and go to the hulme chippy down bonsell street. buy are sweets from bibbs, The shop in a van on Arnott crescent. thank 4 photos
Sorry I'm back again lol at 6.47 Martins Bank-just behind there was Nelson Terrace and my elder Siblings used to take me up on the roof of that bank to play with them :/ kids these days don't know what fun is pmsl
I grew up Nelson Terrace Brookes Bar,and I remember my mum donkey stoning our step.We moved to Stretford but I later returned to Hulme/Mosside in my late teens and the only thing I hated was the cockroaches.I loved going to the Boat Night club-yep those were def the days.
Hulme was never a 'dump' some people that lived there were of the 'dumping' kind though. Lol.
I grew up in the OLD Hulme, the people were the salt of the earth and part of a vibrant, hard working community with the men going off to work early in the morning to Metrovickers or Dunlops. The women donkey stoned their steps with pride and worked hard for their family.
I could go on and on but Kevin has heard it all before-chuckle.
I got off my face in those places. I thought it was great at the time, but looking back, what a dump. My overall recollections are of getting mugged, burgled and v.d.
The First two are unfortunate but the third one is Self inflicted Im afraid, you should have stuck to the one Woman/Man or put something on the end of it.
