The SAM didn't quite make the bomber obsolete. But if I was on a congressional appropriations committee and saw footage like this.... I'd think that missiles would be the future of Global Strategic Offense? Manned bombers are sooo mid-20th Century! Sometimes I wonder with all the advances in weaponry, people of different nations would talk about their issues and not the reductions of Arms? Build the Peace, the weapons would take care of themselves?
My question was more rhetoric than anything else, refering to a much more recent event of our history, where the "remote control planes" option was ruled out immediately because "impossible".
@supressorgrid Nah, it was a 17. You can tell by the position of the wings, and that the forward fuselage was too short. Besides, even in 1950, the Air Force would not expend a 29 as a target drone.
The shot of the B-17 exploding was later used in the film "Earth Vs The Flying Saucers"

Oh.... so we COULD remote control and fly a B 17 60 years ago ?
Very interesting.

@EricBarbman Now if the war had only gone on five years longer, our remote controlled B17's full of explosives plan might have worked lol.
peepeevagi 7 months ago
@EricBarbman They used remote control as far back as ww2 the germans and the allies were tyring it out

If Hitler did not favour V-2 so much that Wasserfall came into service, this might really going to be happening on the B-17 with flight crew in it

Yeah, would have been great if Russia was going to bomb us with B17s in 1966!
Robwashashore1990 1 year ago
@Robwashashore1990
The Russians had their own large bombers which this was designed for. Also, this is from the 50s before ICBMs. Learn some history before you comment.
