  • On a morning from a Bogart movie

In a country where they turn back time

You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre

    Contemplating a crime

She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running

Like a watercolor in the rain

    Don't bother asking for explanations

She'll just tell you that she came

In the year of the cat

  • She doesn't give you time for questions

As she locks up your arm in hers

And you follow 'till your sense of which direction

    Completely disappears

By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls

There's a hidden door she leads you to

These days, she says, I feel my life

Just like a river running through

    The year of the cat

  • Well, she looks at you so coolly

And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea

She comes in incense and patchouli

So you take her, to find what's waiting inside

    The year of the cat

  • Well morning comes and you're still with her

And the bus and the tourists are gone

And you've thrown away your choice and lost your ticket

So you have to stay on

But the drumbeat strains of the night remain

In the rhythm of the new-born day

You know sometime you're bound to leave her

But for now you're going to stay

In the year of the cat

  • great voice beautiful and perfect!!!!!!!!!! total love

  • Ah yes...back in 77/78 Getting Stoned with Janie, listening to this song. Never forget you, you were a little fireplug and I should have jumped your bones, but I knew the chemistry wasn't there for the long term. I also didn't want to be a rebound guy when you were thinking about your ex. Still, you were an important part of my life. Thanks for all the good weed and conversation!

  • I just love this song its a classic!

  • I saw him live with the then-new love of my life at the Universal Ampitheater(before it had a roof)on August 9, 1977. Security told me, "TWO photos, and that's it." The photos are long gone, but the memory is lifelong. A totally unique genre of music(I've BEEN to the "blue-tiled walls near the market stalls") with one of the greatest women who ever lived. ;])

  • ya know this is a great tune my big sis nanc turned me on to it thanks

  • I've posted this on FB a few times. Awesome tune!

  • I think that this is just one of those songs that is just a pleasure to listen to. It's just so well crafted and arranged, and Al Stewart's voice is just so great to listen to.

I think that's why this song is still a favorite of mine after all these years.

Javier Bernal
