  • My favorite thing about this tune is that it really might have been a pop hit..yeah its got all the stuff us music people like but its also catchy..and I admit Iike "Love Will Keep Us Together" by Captian and Tenille...keyboard bass is pretty awesome on that tune

  • I was always a huge fan of SPOCK'S BEARD,considering them unique for their use of harmony and rhythm. And then I fell on this band. Ouch. This hurt.

  • Perfect band!!! Perfect Song!!!

  • Honestly, I first heard this song on Jordan Rudess' album, and decided to check out the original.

Thank you JR for showing me this incredible song

And thank you GG for creating this incredible song!

  • @White1Tiger2Dan Don't worry, I learned it from him too.

  • very good !!!!!! i really like this song, and gentle giant is amazing !!!!! i really like them !!!!!!! Amazing sounds !!!!! this song reminds me... Sound chaser from Yes

  • And besides, the complexity of most GG material makes the mere ability to perform it live - regardles of whether or not you have all the bells and whistles as you do in the studio - more than enough for me.

  • OK, "the usual things done in studio sessions". Of course. But there was nothing they did in the studio that could not physically be done on stage. Derek Shulman obviously couldn't sing and play sax at the same time (although brother Phil could have played some sax parts live and I suspect did before he left the band).

Put it this way - they didn't do anything in the studio (i.e. 'tricks') that the Beatles hadn't done before them (with no intention on their part of ever doing it live).

  • @micheljch Oops - forgot that Phil was main vocalist before he split, so the roles would be reversed.

  • @micheljch Do you have the albums 'Free Hand', 'Octopus', and 'In A Glass House'? Compare tracks from those LPs with tracks from 'Playing the Fool: The Official Live Gentle Giant'. Note the differences.

  • @SuperCartiel yeah OK i hear ya; I'm not an idiot - but my point is also that the studio 'tricks' in some songs make them impossible to recreate live. period. nowadays with sampling it's a different story, but would be quite antiseptic. But GG was able to come up with arrangements that worked and which COULD be done live without breaking the bank. 500 characters a pop isn't enough to discuss this so let's just shake hands and agree that we're both fans of the band! OK? :D

  • @micheljch OK! :)

  • wow...i haven't heard this since the 70's...i hear shades of Todd Rundgren, YES, Genisis, Steve Hillage...did i leave anyone out?

  • @Edshread the only thing i hear is total originality. They have their own unique sound. That justs scratches the surface of what makes this band the greatest ever.

  • i love the music of hindemith, stravinsky, early weimar german jazz, kurt weill, dada,THIS MUSIC is true music, add saxaphones, old jazz,eh,new jazz.add a slow beat then,a ballad, see, bach, great music is timeless.the idiocy of our generation is, "mariah carry, the puff daddies,THEY ARE NOT MUSICIANS,so,mariaha has EIGHT OCTAVE voice, can SHE EVEN HOLD A NOT,HAVE HER SING JUST ONE LINE OF "WAGNER",YEAH,TRISTAN AND ISOLDE,these guys stand the test of time

  • Gentle Giant always stuns with their remarkable composition skills. By far one of the best prog bands to date.

  • @marluxiaman they re also very underated no one talks about them tht much anymore and they deserve some credit such as other bands like genesis yes and pink floyd

  • Music, as it is today, is plastic and forgettable. Everything's woefully synthetic, bland, static and gimmick-laden. At best, it;s eventually disposable.

Gentle Giant had their studio tricks. But it also was original, creative and unique.

This music will stand the test of time.

Will Lady Gaga and her peers?

  • @SuperCartiel ur absolutely right nowadays after like a week or so people re gonna get tired of the popular songs cuz they have been played so much and there really not tht gd

  • @randomguyh8y True. But, thanks to the Net (and You Tube, too!), there are good alternatives.

Don't go with the sheep. Be a deviant.

"Look around. Choose your own ground." --Roger Waters, 'Breathe' (from Pink Floyd, "Dark Side of the Moon")

  • @SuperCartiel Studio Tricks? LIke what? They were certainly able to re-create everything they did in the studio on the stage playing live.

  • @micheljch Dubbing and overdubbing, loops, effects, etc. The usual things done in studio sessions (look for the CD Set 'Under Construction". It's an 'audio diary' that can explain their methods better than I can, plus it has rare, unreleased tracks.)

Oh, the Giant could perform their works live, but not always like they did in the studio. Some arrangements were simplified to make performing the pieces easier. These variations were often called 'permutations'.

  • I grew up listening to these guys, they definitely had a great deal of influence in how I listened to and approached music.

  • One of my favourite tracks ever! Absolute genius,,,,this is what music is about,,,stop this X factor shit!

  • I remember thinking : what is that ? jazz ? rock ? fusion ? rock-fusion-jazz ? And that by musicians dressed-up like robin hood, playing a marimba and some sort of alphorn live, as it seems according to the photos of my recent rock magazine ? No, it was original Gentle Giant. As original as they always were, as I had to learn from the day, I´ve "experienced" my first GG song - Just the Same. It totally blew me away. The boys of the band enriched my musical universe like no other, surely.

  • always set me back to Oct 1975 when I heart it the first time.. and always a real perfect time travel, all is there still in my mind: the situations, the smells, the feelings, all my perceptions than ...entirely preserved just by the extremely unusual talent of that fantastic band..I will always love their music ! Any true GG fan from the first hour onwards will know what I mean....

  • i love free hand

  • mille anni avanti!

  • This is so fun!! Love it!!

  • By any measure, GG presented the highest concentration of raw compositional power and multi-instrumental chops ever seen in a small prog combo: multiple gifted composers; multiple lead singers; each could play guitar (including the drummer) if called upon -- their all-recorder live ensembles were the stuff of legend ...altogether incomparable.

  • @tanner9862 ...hi tanner.....just to let you know i agree 110% with what you said....gg might just be the most diabolical band in history....the keyboard lines,,,,the bass lines and all the lines are extrodinary.....evidentley the most overall talented band ever to come out of the progressive rock era.....simply put......pure genius.........hail the mighty gentle giant and take care of yourself my fellow gg admirer...

  • @tanner9862 Most of the prog bands I listen have members talented in multiple instruments. Like Dream Theaters idea to perform as 'Nightmare Cinema' haha its great. I love bands that do stuff like that. I haven't heard Gentle Giant live so I can't compare to any of the bands I have seen live. I seem to have been born in the wrong decade considering the music I listen to and all.
