Whatever you feel personally about Southern's band--one this is agreed--when they come into the place the opponent's band know they have to step up. Southern is the best COMPLETE MARCHING band, hands down. They are one of the few bands that show skill on the field-not gyrating and popping or lying on their backs like cock roaches--what is that all about?
You can't hide when the camera is right in your phase. Breathing, phrasing, articulation, etc. all while cranking out 90s. They never catch the best players on the field.

It was cold and raining out there, that is not what we are use to in Louisiana. I barely knew I had feet marching on the field. I acn only imagine what horn players were dealing with as far as trying to keep their mouthpieces warm and lips warmed up. BET is the worse, they make everybody sound band just about...
Please don't make excuses. Just because it is cold outside doesn't mean there is room for error. This is a world reknown collegiate level band. No excuse.
BET is known for making a band sound like crap, their camera footage is horrible. They will make the best band even the non-hbcu bands sound like sh@t!! I still prefer a JSU, FAMU, SU, show over MSU, OSU, OR UW anyday. Hbcu shows just have more SOUL!!!

I agree and disagree. Most hbcu bands are not regularly playing in 60,000-110,000 seat stadiums. See how many flutes or piccolos or clarinets you hear in the top row of the upper deck at Spartan or Ohio or Memorial Stadium - NONE. When Michigan is visiting and their band turns to play the other direction, you can barely hear them. Not so with OSU or MSU. So to me they add nothing.
And I agree that many non-hbcu are boring. Nearly all hbcu band drills are phenomenal! But with all the head-bobbing and instrument-waving, the sound quality of most is dreadful

i like SU and all but they tend to over shadow other instruments in the band in all the songs the play. the only instruments in that band i can hear are the trumpets and tubas.

I actually have some clips of the legion in action go through the same "problems" as SU is in this video. So it is not a case of "microphones are only recording what it hears", it is very bad quality. cheap sound equiptment. Either way, the legion is not up to par with Southern
Everyone knows Norfolk has better level of musicality than Southern, you can ask any musician. But can you post these clips you say you have? Care recall what game and year it was, I will guarantee anything you upload of NSU will not sound like this. Every section of NSU is on point, therefore when the camera singles an individual section or group, the quality will still be there. Unlike SU when the only time they sound good is as a whole, they play loud enough to cover up mistakes.
