  • The funniest thing is, IF our Basenjis do some noise WE ALL LAUGH at them hahahahahahahaha

  • My basenjis just dart in attack and dart out. Rhe cats do flurry punches in tge face

  • @pudgesgirl31 I don't think so, this is absolutely a basenji, or have you ever seen a Jack Russell terriër with a curled tail and about this size? Not me, and this dog makes the typical sound for Basenji's, he didn't really bark, but it was close to a bark, but it is absolutely a Basenji.

  • Wow, that is one vocal little guy! We have a 1 year old tricolor who is virtually silent. I haven't heard him make so much as a baroo in months.

  • I love basenjis, I have three, and I love the yodeling.....

  • for some reason my dad's girlfriend's basenji dog(who died) :( was afraid of cats yet the funny thing is they use these dogs to hunt tigers and stuff in africa.... and the tigers are afraid of them?

  • 1st time on a farm, mine ran into a machine shed after a cat. She came out with five tiny, perfectly spaced spots of blood in her nose! When our bigger dog saw cows and freaked out in fear, the Basenji walked past, took the heard for a lap around the field, then trotted past the other dog. Too funny!

  • I'm not sure why you would let your dog that close to a cat when he can get his little eyes scratched out, unless the you know the cat and it's declawed.

  • haha that is cute! Unless I'm trying to sleep.

  • lol my basenji will try so hard to bark in times like this but its like a little "puff" and maybe a tiny bit of noise

  • What the hell, why is this basenji barking?

  • basenji este un caine care nu latra

  • I think I saw a play bow from the dog. He wanted to play with the cat. To cute.

  • Also, my basenji's other best friend was a cat he grew up with. He was so sweet & entertaining but EXTREMELY destructive!!!!!!!!!

  • I've never heard a Basenji bark like that, that was almost dog like :P

  • Okay folks. As a former owner of a sheltie, and yes, they *DO* bark alot (very happy little communicators they are), I know something of barking.

I don't care how, are where it is located in the throat or by what physical means it is expressed,*that* my friends, is a barkin' dog. Unique bark, I'll grant you, maybe in many ways, but a bark none the less!

    VERY cute! :-)

And that cat seemed totally nonplussed. Moved out slowly. Methinks it knows that doggie...

  • if that was my basenji that cat would be dead meat!

  • Its so strange to hear a basenji barking??? Mine does the yodeling thing and other strange noises. I always thought the fact that they dont bark was what made them stand out from other breeds.

  • Most basenjis are able to produce a bark-like sound, but they're not actually barking. If you compare a basenjis "bark" with a normal dogs bark, you can clearly hear the difference, as the normal dogs bark lies further down in the throat.

  • Couldn't you tell? That basenji wanted to play with the cat... The cat wasn't too thrilled about the prospect tho... =) But boy, that dog did all the play moves in the book, even the patented Basenji happy-talking!

  • mine made plenty of noises, mostly growling like a demon, was raised with a barking australian terrier, never barked, unreal dog, totally fearless escape artist.

  • Re: Escape artist. My basenji could climb our chain link fence. His best friend was a borzoi who, after the basenji escaped & left him behind, would yelp& jump straight up in the air, higher that the fence, but never figured out that he could easily leap over the fence if he projected his leap forward! Basenjis are too smart for their own good [and their humans].

  • ACtually Basenjis can bark - it just depends on whether they are raised around normal dogs. If they are - they can learn to bark.

  • eh no. They try to mimic a bark, but it's 100% impossible for them to do so because of the way their voice box is, which is similar to a cows.

  • Lol.

Well, that last comment applies only to the beginning of the vid.

And the animals are smart enough to know to stay at least 5 inches away.

    =)

  • Umm...wow, ya let the dog pretty close to that cat, huh?

    Isn't that a liottle cruel?

    To both animals.

And the leash was very, very loose...so it was so easy to just either get t cat bitten, or the dog scratched.

    >.>

    Anyhoo,

cute video. It's cool how the dog barkes and all. =)

  • We are the owners of this dog. He is purebred basenji with a pedigree, he was just too excited :)

  • ALL basenji's bark, they just dont the mostly yoddle , if they feel threated or trying to prectect there owner they do. there voice box is too small to bark all the time tough. but they can.

  • i was gonna say. how is he barking.

  • ur basenji barks?!?!?!?!?!

  • sounds like my basenji, she will yodel at you when she is hungry or wants to go out she is 13 how long do they typically live for?

  • between 13 and 15 if taken good care

  • They can learn to bark from other dogs...ours came from a shelter and can DEFINITELY bark with the best of them! She does make some pretty strong yodels and whines though!

  • Besenji's DO NOT bark. There is not a purebred besenji that barks. I work at a shelter, and chances are if it came from a shleter it is mixed with something, maybe even the slightest bit of something. they can make a sound that sounds close to a bark, but is not "classified" as a bark... (AKC standards)

  • basenjis have the same vocal chords every other dog has and can bark if they learn how...often its combined into a yodel...mine never barked until she was about a year and a half old and met a basset at the park who does quite a bit of barking

  • Um. Basenjis CAN bark, most just don't, or they ROO, which can sound like a bark. This basenji is "rooing" a few quick roos and then some longer roos and some full out yodels. Read the research - they have the physiology to bark but do not. This is 100% a pure basenji, look at it.

  • you dont own a BASEINJ do you ?

  • im doin an assignment at tafe atm about basenjis, and i read tht basenjis can actually mimic, and if brought up with other barking dogs will learn how 2 bark as well. it doesnt look like a mix, and sounds like its just trying 2 bark... it finishes with a kind of yodel.i reckon its just mimicing :D

  • My basenji was raised with a beagle and can definitely bark, although not that often. She was imitating the beagle. It is not a normal bark and is usually followed by their characteristic yodel. Very Cute!

  • oh hes defiantly a basenji I dont know why everyone says he has to be mixed because he barks. They bark sometimes my Buddy does. Thats just a cute video they get sooo excited so easy lol.

  • If barks it´s not a Basenji, thats what I've learned anyway!

  • thats pretty rare I have two and they like to yodel but never heard them bark like that!!

  • is that like half basenji cause that sounds like a bark to me...mine rarley makes a sound haha..and we have a cat too. the cat striked my basenji once. she was bleeding. poor basenji.

  • basenjis can mimic other dogs my last basenji did it she did beagel, baset, chow, and chihuahua but only when she wanted to

  • Mine sounded human, cause she would wait on the top of the stairs to complain about the day to my dad...

  • Looks like this may have been a first encounter... early socialization is so important with children and animals.

  • kitty says 'f.o., curly tail!' adorable dog!

  • i thought basenjis dont bark

  • They don't, but they do however imitate sounds, and if they are around other dogs that DO bark, they will learn how to.

  • Wow, thats a lot of barking for a basenji! At least he threw in a few proper yodels.
