The only modern metal bands I've heard that stick to their Heavy Metal roots were formed in the 90's, and/or are Stoner/Doom Metal.

I refer to screamo as "metal" (complete with quotation marks to imply sarcasm) because it has no roots in music like Black Sabbath and Metallica. Death Metal is extremely different, but the most popular form of heavy music nowdays is "metal," in my age group most people listen to "metal," where as only a few listen to Heavy Metal.

The shit you refer to is just the one new thing getting noticed, but GREAT metal and music in general is still being made. Tons of it, in fact. More than ever before. You just have to find it.

Just from the area I was born in, I can easily name several great heavy/metal bands, like Profane Omen (Wastehead), Kill the Romance (Blood Bell), Before the Dawn (Deadsong) etc.

Everything in Maiden goes through Harris' eyes so he is the boss. And second in command is Dave Murray. They are a very equal band though, that's why the kick ass.
