I think he is as as close to the book character of Rochester as it gets, but I really do not like the woman who played Jane. She was much too openly impertinent for the real Jane Eyre character.
I thought Charlotte Gainsbourg played Jane Eyre the best.
jane is naieve in the way that she hasn't experienced a lot of things in life. as ruth says, rochester is basically the second man jane meets and if he were to be the fiftieth she might have changed her attitude towards men by then.. though jane is obviously wise in her own way.
Toby is so GORGEOUS and Ruth is so cute and, not really beautiful in a classical way, but there is something awesome in her features. They both were SUPERB in their roles, and Toby has become my ideal of man. I ADORE listening to them speaking about their roles because I actually totally agree with them.
i'm shocked to notice myself finding him somewhat attractive. i don't really go for european men save maybe one. i'm pleased to note that i don't find his accent annoying...i don't really find accents attractive...i feel nothing for them actually. but his accent does sound somewhat pleasing to the ears.
Excellent comments on his part. Besides being an excellent performer, he's also very smart. I think it shows how twisted the the entertainment business works, considering how other actors like Matthew McConaughey, Ewan McGregor or even Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise that do not have (in my opinion) his talent have such popularity nowadays. It's such a shame. I'm from Peru and it's sad that the only way I have access to such superb acting is through You Tube.
@Meny20 I agree with what you have said. But I think actors like him desire to work in small but more meaningful work rather than the crap that the actors you have mentioned act in.
It's amazing how Toby and Ruth look so much like they've actually popped out of Howarth in the Brontes' time! The Victorian look suits Toby perfectly and Ruth looks so much like a Bronte sister herself!
pixposteruk: when last in the UK, I watched more of this interview, with Toby talking about Rochester having a history with "actresses, prostitutes and God know's what else". Could you please post that bit as well?
Jane is his equal and she admits it, something he's never seen in a woman before, (he's been with beautiful and violent women, but that's not the same) she's a scholar and in the same time very feminine in her petiteness.
Thank you so much for posting this. One of the great pleasures of any Toby Stephens performance is hearing his commentary about it. This, like the other ones I've heard (Onegin for example), is intelligent and insightful. Toby is sexy AND smart. Ai yi yi!
You're welcome - could not agree more re. Toby. And it's worth having the DVD for this feature alone as his and the rest of the cast's comments are so insightful as you say. It was a genius casting decision to put him as Rochester.
...I also very much like how Toby analyzes Rochester, partially agreeing with him that he and Jane are alike, but partly dismissing it as projection. That Rochester is so real to him is part of Toby's great appeal as an actor. Please movie moguls, give us more, more more!!
Thanks for this! I got way too addicted to this version, and I love extra feature in any form!
I could listen to that man read the phone book. *sigh* I'm almost afraid to see anything else with him (Die Another Day). I don't wanna ruin the image.
He is right when he talks about Jane and Mr. Rochester. Rochester represents, all of us, after we lived our lives for some time. Everybody longs for honesty, prestine, unspoiled. Jane represents all of that, before we go on with our lives and sink ourselves in lies, coruption, and everything else spoiled. I think actors portrayed their characters very well. They are realy very inteligent people, and that is why the movie Jane Erye is so powerful.
What's with the red tie around her neck what does that mean can anyone tell me please?

Very thoughtful and intelligent insights about the character. Very intelligent actor, and eloquent, too.

Rochester also admires Jane's strength. Because he knows what her childhood must have been.
