It seems to me that someone should give credit to the songwriter Mr Mike Batt the genius behind most of what Katie Melua is doing at the moment. This David Essex track is one of my favourite yuletide tunes although there is no mention of Christmas in the song at all - perhaps thats why I like it so much?
I can remember listening to this on the radio on a cold December morning. I was half asleep, eating my breakfast cereal and getting ready for school. I remember the lovely taste of the hot cereal and listening to the words of the song and feeling excited that the Christmas holidays were just around the corner. Great song. Only David Essex could do it justice with that smoky voice of his.
Just love this song reminds me of beautiful Christmasses gone by and of course David Essex is just as handsome now as he was back then, those blue eyes can still make my heart skip a beat!
This was my erea - 70's ! I had a poster of David on my wall, he was just sooo handsome, as you can see from this video !! This song, as ronaldo said, is 'timeless' . It is so beautiful, and yet, so very sad ! Great song David xxx
this reminds me everytime i hear it of someone i was in love with between october and february 1990/91 i still think of him and "wonder where you are today"...
1 of my favourite Crimbo songs ever along with Mud-Greg Lake- Jona Lewie & Johnny Mathis. This song brought tears to my eyes in the late 80s & early 90's as I'd broke up with my 1st love Dawn. Happy Christmas to all decent people from here in Romford, Essex, in the UK. P.S. I'm David FROM Essex, NOT thee David Essex. (someone was bound to comment)
Hi jemmabond, Maybe this video was filmed at Christmas but a English Christmas where it could look like Spring and then in the Spring it could look like Winter, I do not know where you come from but here in the British Isles and Ireland we no longer have set weather realting to set seasons of the year, maybe something to do with climate change. All the best from AJ
A great Christmas song from a very talented artist, one of the most popular artists from the 70s/80s and still performing, I think that modern music has really died the death, It doesn't come close to the class music/singing/songwriting of the 60s/70s. David Essex played his part in a special era of music.
It's a true sign of the sheer quality of music available in this glorious era when this song only got to the number two spot. I can't recall too many others worthier of top spot which just missed out. On a more personal note one of the first songs I can fondly recall from my younger days and it has certainly stood the test of time and is way up there with my all time favourites. The dog in the video is a lovely touch too. Cheers for the memories and an early Happy Christmas to all!
Dear Jemmabond, Same here chicken. I adore this song and have done for years and years. Im gonna have a mega crappy lonely xmas too so think of me and I'll think of you.lol
I was 9 when I first heard this and thought, as I still do, that it was a beautiful song. Even TRIED singing along to it....making a fool of myself in the process:-)
I remember as a teenager working in Super Valu in Cork,Eire at Christmas' 1999 and 2000.I found this song weird-unlike most Christmas songs which are happy and festive this song is sad and dreary.Still a great song though.memories.
I have a horrible confession. David Essex raped me one night. I was on a camping holiday in the Norfolk Broads, roasting chesnuts on the fire. Suddenly, out of the bushes loomed Essex, eyes wide with lust and anger, his fingers dripping with egg yolk, i presume from him stealing eggs from a birds nest to eat. He smelled of hedgehogs. He beat me to an inch of my life then, singing "Tahiti, the love of my life" violently penetrated me. You disgusting fiend Essex, you deserve to be locked up
bollox to you too,i bet you were never forced to endure endless essex records by your mother like i was when you were growing up,she made me like i am....
An absolutely beautiful, heart-wrenching song by Mike Batt about lost love... which many of us can relate to. Sung by the superb David Essex, and filmed against a backdrop of stunning scenery.
Great musician, Mike Batt. But before you write off 'The Wombles' completely, just have another close listen to the excellent melody of 'Wombling Merry Christmas' (particularly the verse) whilst disassociating the 'Womble' connection from the actual music. You may be very pleasantly surprised. And the delicious marriage of Mozart's minuet from his 'Jupiter' Symphony with Batt's melody in 'Minuetto Allegretto' is masterful. Finally, those lyrics are crisp, witty & very cleverly designed. Cheers!
David is fantastic, this is my favourite of his songs, i went to see him on saturday in the musical aspects of love, which is currently touring around england, it is fantastic, and he is still sexy as ever!:-)

Malcom X suspects that eggs are hexed, let's look at why,
The eggs, he says, affects his legs when flex his legs he tries.
And thus reflects in lexicon perplexed and existential,
Expressive David Essex when reflects on X credentials.
