  • It seems to me that someone should give credit to the songwriter Mr Mike Batt the genius behind most of what Katie Melua is doing at the moment. This David Essex track is one of my favourite yuletide tunes although there is no mention of Christmas in the song at all - perhaps thats why I like it so much?

  • One of the christmas greats that should be played every year.please request it with your local radio station xx

  • I remember listening to this with my mum when i was 11. I miss her so much, it reminds me of a happier time in my life.

  • I can remember listening to this on the radio on a cold December morning. I was half asleep, eating my breakfast cereal and getting ready for school. I remember the lovely taste of the hot cereal and listening to the words of the song and feeling excited that the Christmas holidays were just around the corner. Great song. Only David Essex could do it justice with that smoky voice of his.

  • what lovely memories to have. It's funny how a song can do that! Peace x

  • Just love this song reminds me of beautiful Christmasses gone by and of course David Essex is just as handsome now as he was back then, those blue eyes can still make my heart skip a beat!

  • Such a wonderful soul. Beautifully done.

  • Beautiful song and beautiful clip. David Essex is so handsome!

  • Malcom X suspects that eggs are hexed, let's look at why,

The eggs, he says, affects his legs when flex his legs he tries.

And thus reflects in lexicon perplexed and existential,

Expressive David Essex when reflects on X credentials.

  • Almost hit number one in January 1983, kept off the top spot by Phil Collins with You Can't Hurry Love.

  • At his best

  • My Mum thinks he looks like Joshua Jones.

  • This was my erea - 70's ! I had a poster of David on my wall, he was just sooo handsome, as you can see from this video !! This song, as ronaldo said, is 'timeless' . It is so beautiful, and yet, so very sad ! Great song David xxx

I love David Essex and love this song although sometimes it makes me feel a little sad

  • He Has got to be one of the most gorgeous men in the world EVER !!! At his peak !!! Loverly !!!

  • 1 of my favourite Crimbo songs ever along with Mud-Greg Lake- Jona Lewie & Johnny Mathis. This song brought tears to my eyes in the late 80s & early 90's as I'd broke up with my 1st love Dawn. Happy Christmas to all decent people from here in Romford, Essex, in the UK. P.S. I'm David FROM Essex, NOT thee David Essex. (someone was bound to comment)

  • clothes pegs anyone?!

  • bless ya ! theres only one jim mclaine|! merry xmas mr essex

  • The song is about Christmas, but the video looks like it was filmed in Spring

  • Spring,Summer,Autumn or Winter.Dony matter.What a sexy guy to sing at christmas.

Saw David at Belle Vue Manchester 1975. FANTASTIC.

  • Hi jemmabond, Maybe this video was filmed at Christmas but a English Christmas where it could look like Spring and then in the Spring it could look like Winter, I do not know where you come from but here in the British Isles and Ireland we no longer have set weather realting to set seasons of the year, maybe something to do with climate change. All the best from AJ

  • I love this song

  • MIKE Batt WOMBLES ROCK !!! GOD BLES !!!

  • Mike Batt wrote the music to this song but I reckon much credit is also due to Tim Rice as he wrote the lyrics to this song.

  • thats hilarious leon

  • i think so lol

  • lol hehe :D add me to ur friends if u like!

  • oh your so so cruel lol

  • but true lol what would be your definition of a pykey twat if not a fish? :P

  • well fish would smell a lot nicer lol,,,,,a lot nicer, trust me on that 1 ha ha.

  • A classic

  • A great Christmas song from a very talented artist, one of the most popular artists from the 70s/80s and still performing, I think that modern music has really died the death, It doesn't come close to the class music/singing/songwriting of the 60s/70s. David Essex played his part in a special era of music.

  • love this song!thanks

  • Merry christmas cornyboo!

  • awsome christmas song

  • an absoloute classic!!!!! its nearly here merry xmas everyone.........

  • happy christmas to you so glad that someone else is getting excited x x x

  • I am too! :) I've just had my birthday which for me is always the first day of christmas :)

  • Aww, Love this, was just listening to it 2 days ago x

  • He was supposed to come back as Arther Fowler's younger brother...

  • I love this song - probably my favourite Christmas song ever

  • Did you know that David Essex was supposed to play Billy Mitchell's father-in-law in Eastenders, but he changed his mind?

  • Wasn't this beaten to the Christmas Number 1 spot in 1982 by Rene and Renato?

  • Truly a great song, it shows Christmas sprit.

  • It's a true sign of the sheer quality of music available in this glorious era when this song only got to the number two spot. I can't recall too many others worthier of top spot which just missed out. On a more personal note one of the first songs I can fondly recall from my younger days and it has certainly stood the test of time and is way up there with my all time favourites. The dog in the video is a lovely touch too. Cheers for the memories and an early Happy Christmas to all!

  • Well put and happy Christmas to you also!

  • The best... My Grandads favourite... First Christmas without pops....x

  • The films were , that will be the day, ...and Stardust ...really sad.

  • I remember as a teenager working in Super Valu in Cork,Eire at Christmas' 1999 and 2000.I found this song weird-unlike most Christmas songs which are happy and festive this song is sad and dreary.Still a great song though.memories.

  • How much better can a video be I wonder.

An absolutely beautiful, heart-wrenching song by Mike Batt about lost love... which many of us can relate to. Sung by the superb David Essex, and filmed against a backdrop of stunning scenery.

    Excellent all round.

    Carol Douglas

  • david essex is not only a tinker with tarmac,he is the spitting image of wayne slob from harry enfeild on this vid!!

  • brought back all the memories, good and bad...thank you, David. You're gorgeous.

  • always loved david wish i could meet him on alonely nighht

  • Great musician, Mike Batt. But before you write off 'The Wombles' completely, just have another close listen to the excellent melody of 'Wombling Merry Christmas' (particularly the verse) whilst disassociating the 'Womble' connection from the actual music. You may be very pleasantly surprised. And the delicious marriage of Mozart's minuet from his 'Jupiter' Symphony with Batt's melody in 'Minuetto Allegretto' is masterful. Finally, those lyrics are crisp, witty & very cleverly designed. Cheers!

  • Written by Mike Batt... he is a brilliant song writer ( except for The Wombles ) ;)

I agree with the songwriting, but after seeing the advert on the TV Mike Batt is a boring and expressionless singer. I won't be buying this.

  • Written by Mike Batt... he is a brilliant song writer ( except for The Wombles ) ;)

And Mike Batt writes for, produces and discovered Katie Melua. Can you hear the similarity in his songs? He also wrote Bright Eyes ( Art Garfunkel)

  • moody blues version is better

  • all this snow made me think of this......in bloody April lol

  • I love this song. I remember listening to it in the car on a Xmas song CD last Christmas!

  • essex rules

  • David is fantastic, this is my favourite of his songs, i went to see him on saturday in the musical aspects of love, which is currently touring around england, it is fantastic, and he is still sexy as ever!:-)

  • This song is so great, a classic song, I wish this went higher in the charts, eh?

  • It got to number 2 in 1982. The Christmas number in the UK that year was "Save Your Love" by Renee and Renato!

  • Although released in 1982 it peaked in Jan 1983 denied no.1 by "you can't hurry love" by Phil Collins.

  • one of my favourite xmas songs david supr ; just loved the collie

  • david was just adorable in these days...still is very attractive...great christmas song too..happy xmas to everyone!

  • great song from jim mcclain without the straycats! merry xmas folks!
