what you need is only light, I don't know why, but some webcam need a lot of it...others hopefully not.

The trick is actually in backlight comp. If it isnt 0 than even if you put the sun in front of cam it wont do any diference . The problem is that when you put high ammount of light for cam to apsorb because of the contrast you will be dark . Backlight comp tries to lighten up your cam picture when you're in a dark setting. That process is pain in ass for your webcam . Notice how dark he was with 30 fps !

I already knew It's pretty much a lighting issue, especially sunlight can get the fps at around 30 but a modification of the software (a patch) would be best. glad it helped some people though.

that helped. any suggestions for my inbuilt mic? it's very faint and pretty useless. i can only hear with headphones and on full volume. i checked on control panel and the mic is ticked as active/working and i raised the sensitivity to max. dunno what else i'm missing.. new to dell & to vista. webcam centre doesn't seem to have additional volume settings. hope there's options other than reinstalling drivers/multimedia centre. can't voice chat, as mic too faint.

i just reinstalled os

and gives 20 MAX RES

and almost 50 fps on min res

also change the file format from .avi to .mpg

same quality less space required

in my settings i only see .avi and .wmv, not .mpg.

did you mean to say .wmv or am i in the wrong place?

I have had my vostro notebook for a year with slow fps and had given up on fixing it. Wow, I had never though that my lighting just was crappy. Thx, this brought it up from 8 fps to 30!!!

hey um this is going to sound really stupid but i have a xps m1530 and i cant even find the webcam program when i go through my programs i find the setting option but i cant find the actual webcam program

just hit start and type webcam....you should find something that says "dell webcam center"

just click it and your good

well thats the problem whenever i do that all i get is dell webcam console and its just the setting for the webcame picture

so does that mean maybe my computer might not have gotten the basic software.

nevermin i went online and found a free download for it so

dont worry thanks for video too cause if you dont get setup with good light and resolution your frame rate is gonna be horrible on these but if you get it right its a pretty good webcam

One real fix seems to be turning off auto white balance (in addition to backlight correction).

This isn't a fix. This is a work-around. I have a crappy Logitech webcam that gets great frame rates while the Dell integrated webcam gets poor frame rates in identical lighting. A real fix would be a way to turn off the low light boost, which seems to be a hidden feature.

well the light is an indicator that its on and working but i can let you know by tomorrow morning if you can or cant. Its late for me and i have my midterm in two days so im studying my ass off. Promise to get back to you by tomorrow morning=)

ok im back. the only way to make the light not come on is to either: tape over is with black tape, or take your 1530 apart and disconnect the wires that lead to LED light but i wouldnt recommend the last one. Sorry i couldnt get you an easier and safer way to do this.
