A lot mixing took place when the white elites tried to "whitening" the population by paying for European immigrants with the intentions that they would breed with the surviving African and indigenous slaves, which explains the various phenotypes. As for "racial segregation" in Brazil, a mixed person w/ enough white features is considered and accepted as white, so much homogeneous tribes.

There are only two states like this in Brazil: Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. In the rest of the country you're going to see a majority of racially mixed people. And remember: there's no "one-drop rule" in Brazil, so having some black ancestry does not make you a black. Racism is a person with more evident white ancestry by the features to be considered "black" (African) because people who believe to have only white ancestry don't accept they can be white if they have some black ancestry. @schizoidchimp, pigmentation is a protection against burns, skin cancer etc. People who occupied the cold North Europe later lost melanin almost without sun, got very white, and today descendants who don't live in hot countries consider they are "the true whites" and think that the rest "want to be white". Brazil is tropical and many get dark taking often sun, even North Europeans and descendants. So races are identified only by the features and caucasian here is the definition of wikipedia.

Continuing, so in Brazil people don't understand what means "latin or hispanic", because Portugueses, Spanish, Italians and South Europeans in general who immigrated to the country are considered white (Europeans) and indians and people who still have indigenous features are few in Brazil. Countries like Chile can give the impression to be more white because it's not tropical and people get less dark. See that Canadian Indians are lighter in comparison with the rest of the American continent.
Officially around 53% in Brazil are white because all the people with predominant European features are considered white (the race), even if they have some mixture generations ago or brown skin. Most North Europeans and descendants do not develop a natural protection against the sun. But the skin of South Europeans etc. (who have more sun) products pigmentation to protect it and most get brown. So, in tropical countries like Brazil the color is not determinant to show the race ot the people.

Well i've never been to Brazil but i've been to Chile and Chile seemed very European... there were quite a few "white" people. I know Brazil isn't as white but i thought the Portuguese founded it??
Either way i am not going to pretend to know a lot about South America. I always heard about Brazil as one of the more multicultural countries and they pride themselves on not being racist, but who knows!
@nostalgiamelancolia1, I don't know if "Jacksonville" knows Chile, But I was in Santiago and other places in the South of the country many years ago. I saw many people that looked to have South European origin in special, but attracted my attention many with black hair and light skin, who did not look Spanish at all. So I noticed they are a mixture between Spanish and indians, but don't get brown because most part of Chile is subtropical or cold. I would say that at least 50% is mixed there.
@bobshenix, you can think that Brazil is a black, white, or mixed country, depending on the places you visit. The South looks very European because there was not a big slavery there, the region is not so hot, and there is a big number of North European descendants, who don't get brown. In Bahia State and other places black are predominant and in the rest of the country you will have the impression that most look "latin" because many are sunburned and only babies show the original color.

According the "Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) - Censo de 2010", the proportion of blacks/mulattos and whites in Rio State is very similar. This video shows a more African State and the videos "Desfile Oktoberfest 2010 Blumenau", a very white State. Our country is very diversified.

Brasil had a big slavery and blacks were majority until before the Portuguese royal family moved to Brasil because of Napoleon and opened the country to immigrants. A lot mixing took place when the white elites tried to "whitening" the population by paying for European immigrants with the intentions that they would breed with the surviving African and indigenous slaves, which explains the various phenotypes. As for "racial segregation" in Brazil, a mixed person w/ enough white features is considered and accepted as white, so much homogeneous tribes.

There are only two states like this in Brazil: Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. In the rest of the country you're going to see a majority of racially mixed people. And remember: there's no "one-drop rule" in Brazil, so having some black ancestry does not make you a black. Being dark skinned with many black characteristics makes you a black person in this country.

@brightlights456X In Brazil unlike the US, "mixed race" isn't considered "black" but "brown". It goes back to the american "one-drop rule" which didn't exist in Brazil. Therefore a brazilian will never agree with someone who says their country is 50% black.
What is true is that Brazil is a very racist society, but ask them about it and they'll say they're not, and that racism is a european/north american thing. It goes back to a BS nationalist theory called "tropicalism".

Racism is a person with more evident white ancestry by the features to be considered "black" (African) because people who believe to have only white ancestry don't accept they can be white if they have some black ancestry. @schizoidchimp, pigmentation is a protection against burns, skin cancer etc. People who occupied the cold North Europe later lost melanin almost without sun, got very white, and today descendants who don't live in hot countries consider they are "the true whites" and think that the rest "want to be white". Brazil is tropical and many get dark taking often sun, even North Europeans and descendants. So races are identified only by the features and caucasian here is the definition of wikipedia.

Continuing, so in Brazil people don't understand what means "latin or hispanic", because Portugueses, Spanish, Italians and South Europeans in general who immigrated to the country are considered white (Europeans) and indians and people who still have indigenous features are few in Brazil. Countries like Chile can give the impression to be more white because it's not tropical and people get less dark. See that Canadian Indians are lighter in comparison with the rest of the American continent.

Officially around 53% in Brazil are white because all the people with predominant European features are considered white (the race), even if they have some mixture generations ago or brown skin. Most North Europeans and descendants do not develop a natural protection against the sun. But the skin of South Europeans etc. (who have more sun) products pigmentation to protect it and most get brown. So, in tropical countries like Brazil the color is not determinant to show the race ot the people.

@JACKSONVILLE1200, when I told you a couple of days ago that "the government is trying to do the right thing", I meant all the actions to give more opportunities for blacks to study, including the quota system. Although it would not be so easy, because many people who don't look black anymore by the miscegenation would try to get an "easier place" in good universities claiming an alleged black ancestry. Studies and consequent better jobs would take many blacks from "favelas", poverty etc.

Well i've never been to Brazil but i've been to Chile and Chile seemed very European... there were quite a few "white" people. I know Brazil isn't as white but i thought the Portuguese founded it??
Either way i am not going to pretend to know a lot about South America. I always heard about Brazil as one of the more multicultural countries and they pride themselves on not being racist, but who knows!

@nostalgiamelancolia1, I don't know if "Jacksonville" knows Chile, But I was in Santiago and other places in the South of the country many years ago. I saw many people that looked to have South European origin in special, but attracted my attention many with black hair and light skin, who did not look Spanish at all. So I noticed they are a mixture between Spanish and indians, but don't get brown because most part of Chile is subtropical or cold. I would say that at least 50% is mixed there.

@bobshenix, you can think that Brazil is a black, white, or mixed country, depending on the places you visit. The South looks very European because there was not a big slavery there, the region is not so hot, and there is a big number of North European descendants, who don't get brown. In Bahia State and other places black are predominant and in the rest of the country you will have the impression that most look "latin" because many are sunburned and only babies show the original color.

@JACKSONVILLE1200, no matter the race, most people in tropical countries like Brazil get darker. In the South Region of Rio city, most are visibly not black because it's the richest area. According the "Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) - Censo de 2010", the proportion of blacks/mulattos and whites in Rio State is very similar. This video shows a more African State and the videos "Desfile Oktoberfest 2010 Blumenau", a very white State. Our country is very diversified.

You know that most blacks still are not in the middle class in Brazil and most countries and we can't blame them. I also told you that have Portuguese origin and live in Rio. @JACKSONVILLE1200, I know that also in Brasil all the people who have African features are seen as "the same": blacks. Brasil had a big slavery and blacks were majority until before the Portuguese royal family moved to Brasil because of Napoleon and opened the country to immigrants. Since then whites etc. have increased and much more mulattos. Part of these mulattos will continue mixing with whites and so... But blacks really represent us abroad more because of samba, carnival, football etc.
