I thought Tommy Bolin is dead. If that is the case, how do you know him? Is it the same Tommy Bolin who appears in this video, or is a different Tommy Bolin?
If it's the same one, can you get his autograph for me please?
Did they swap guitars, or did they swap names? I'm confused. Who plays guitar on this track? And where is Timmy Bolin? Wasn't he also their guitar player?
@redtedinbed not in 85, Bolin died in 76. 85 was just after the MK2 return, with Ritchie Blackmore on the guitar and Roger Glover on the bass. In this video, Glover and Blackmore swapped their guitars just for fun.
They sure look like they're having fun, which belies "Blackmores" (he is the guy in black?) often grumpy persona which I have read about in magazines.
If this is Deep Purple Mk2 then I wish they could reform, but it is a shame that one of them is no longer with us. Timmy Bolin always in our hearts if not on bass in this video in Malmo in 1985.
1985. Ottawa. My first rock concert ever (with my Mom!). It was Deep Purple. Remember we thought the show was over, then this song started to play. We ran back in and sang along just like this audience. Will never forget it.
@dave22h34 Maybe you could do better; when standing in front of a whole lot of people AND you are standing in for the greatest guitar slinger the world has ever seen or and heard. My opinion only.
Wow condescending Ritchie…. Being playful with Roger… THIS IS A WEIRD clip just because of that!!!! I think deep down inside Ritchie is a super guy…. Its funny how he is always on a world of his own when playing guitar… Love him!!!
i agree onehundred percent%,after his stint with the sabbath,he blew us all away!
gillan obviously ripped with deep purple,as blackmore and co. have, but the sabbath album born again made me go "oh fuck that was nothing but rippin hard"!! i could listen to that vocal for days kid!
it makes me think so mush more of Richie Blackmore that he would get on bass to let the other dude shine a bit. It means he's not a total prick, rare in this business.
@battalion30 Thanks for the insight battalion. I do read too much into things. Bipolar has been my demon for many years now and I believe I can blame the disorder for my previous comment on the head shaking.
It really doesn't matter much though. Deep Purple Mark 2 has always been the Real Deep Purple to me.
The band still cooks and they are truly happier without Ritchie around; but I still miss the playing of Ritchie and Jon. No one can play that Hammond like Jon does and Steve is phenomenal.
Amazing...newly I realize that at the end of this video (after 3:40)... Ritchie greets with a reverence and then there takes the thumb of the right hand (opened) with the left hand as a symbolic greeting as he did it to me on Sunday show 30/06/96 in Argentina! ...Little before it I could touch Ritchie and your guitar with my hands ! Eternal Glory My Teacher!
Who the hell said Gillan couldn't sing after his sting with the 'Born Again' album is a wanker and that is a fact. Still sounds awesome here, so f**k off to anyone saying otherwise.
TImmy Bolin?? Who is that? I know Tommy Bolin, but not "Timmy".

Haha, what a stupid comment..if you could only be half as good as Gillan is here you'd be very lucky..get a life moron.
QueenReigns1 5 months ago
I have to ask..why is the video not called..Roger on lead guitar..or Ritchie and Roger swap guitars?
It's not all about Blackmore...especially as the video shows much more of Roger playing the lead guitar than it does Ritchie on bass.

Any mediocre pro bassist would be considered an excellent guitarist.
Just ask if you don't believe me...

@Nacho66 you mean any pro guitarist is an excellent bassist.

Nope. Meant what I said. Most guitarists THINK they're automatically good on bass by default.
Just not true.

No one; and I really do mean *no one* can place that song like Ritchie does.
