  • This is a crock. The only people who portray women are themselves. It is the women who choose the way they are portrayed. So when you blame this on a sexist society, it shows that you think women can't choose for themselves, which is insulting. Maybe if a woman is portrayed as a slut on television, it's because she is comfortable with her sexuality. And maybe, that's her personal choice to do so.

  • @michael1791 NO.

  • This is all men's fault while all guy do is sit around, watch TV, devour junk food, and drink beer.

  • i've never been all that paranoid about the media or photoshopped images in magazines, but i have noticed shit getting a bit twisted. if i ever become a mum, my daughter watching Bratz or owning a Bratz doll isn't even going to be an option.

  • 4:29 WOW if that wasn't considered a mistake by disney i'm shocked....

paris hilton starting her own brand of lingere for little girls only just out of their nappies is bad enough

  • Is that Eminem towards the end of the video rapping?

Wow.. and to the extent of people's praise towards him. "BEST RAPPER ALIVE"

    Peace & Blessings.

  • 4:29 is an example of Disney Being the Pedophilic Institution it is.

  • If you're not parents already, I suggest that when you become one you do not have a television in your home.

    That is my Plan.

  • The Music choice in this Video does not Resonate.

    Peace & Blessings.

  • lol wish i could win that free boob job for my girlfriend 4:51

  • @matzilla90 Really? I personally find that disturbing. why do you like emaciated bitches with huge fake boobs?

  • wow. The Dolce and Gabbana ad at 7:45 is particularly disturbing.

  • Nice a true.

  • Kim is straight the worst song by eminem

  • wow, i had to make a research paper on this topic, and this was an excellent video that gave me a lot of ideas on what to write

    Thank you!

i really hate how women are portrayed in the media so unrealistically

  • This is exactly what we're trying to raise awareness and solutions to. No where in the media is the true nature of women in any way represented.

The same for men. It'd be foolish to think that only the "weak minded" are affected...

Did you know about Milono Blonicks before Sarah Jessica Parker mentioned them?

  • whoa whoa whoa @

    4:30

I knew young girls were starting to be used but

I didn't think DISNEY would do this!

  • lol, I hate Dove. They don't give a fuck about "true beauty", it seems more like a cheap advertizing ploy to me. Despite their so-called respect for all women regardless of size and shape, they still feature pretty, young, skinny girls in most of their ads. Then again, it's a lot better then the other shit that other companies put out there.

  • lol, true. it doesnt really seem genuine to me either.

  • This makes me want to cry so many tears. Also tears for my daughter.

  • Wow? I thank u for the post and u pull my text?

  • education is the key to getting rid of the false image the media portrays. advertising will keep using these images... or worse.. anything that sells. letting girls see the truth (especially photoshopping) can let them make up their own mind. if you buy a womans magazine take it with a grain of salt.

  • but women are dumb enough to let themself be treated like that there the ones running around naked and boo hoo if they have been beaten who cares deal with it

  • Comment removed

  • Its men like you arrogant, scumbags who TRY to keep women down. But it doesnt work. More and more women are out there getting jobsand dont need a man. They are happy that way. Like Christina says " You Cant Hold Us Down"!!!!!

  • Sex Symbol and Homemaker my ass. More like genius by gender. Women are portrayed CONSTANTLYas the wisdomic centres of the intelligent universe. And even if the were just Sex Symbols and Homemakers, I'd take that over the incompetent, moronic and immoral targets for violence that amounts to men in advertising anyday. Try two sides of a coin sometime.

  • well men are brainless pigs i mean it does not take much for there lil brains to go blank lol porn is all u need all men are jerks rape little girls and beat women good job men keep it u:) must make you proud to know you got lucky with a 1 year old

  • I'm a virgin actually and I'm only 18.

An girls have FAR more advantages then men.

  • god can help if you want him too, with body image porn addiction anything like this there is a life past this

  • Disgusting. The women who appear in these ads are accomplices to the degradation of their sex. Also; are those extremely GAY guys supposed to be implying sex at 7:45?

  • This is great! Really helped me on my media coursework. Cheers!

There is some disturbing stuff when you link it all together

  • This was an excellent video. I just had a psychology test the other day that had a question on it asking for opinions: why has there been an increase in the prevelance of depression over the past 60 years? I cited negative body images in the media as one reason.

I've always defied fashion trends and the "ideal" woman. I'm me, not what they tell women to be.

More girls need to see this video and know the truth. I'll send it to friends.

  • Most people aren't media literate. So short of us being too stupid to recognize these messages, we just can't discern they're there.

Of course a man would make the argument that all this sexism directed at women in the media has been blown out of proportion.

  • "Of course a man would make the argument that all this sexism directed at women in the media has been blown out of proportion. "

What is this if not the exact thing that you are accusing. Not all men are interested in perpetuating this image. As an undergraduate in psychology with many social behavior classes under my belt, I can absolutely confirm that these images are present.

Additionally, it is prevalent in other forms of media not covered by the video such as video games. However....

  • Continued from last post....

Attacking the campaigns and images themselves is not necessarily the answer. Education, as others have so poignantly pointed out, is a key to this problem. The only criticism I have about this video is the fact that a solid argument usually explores both sides of an issue before discarding or modifying the perspective. That being said, the video is otherwise well done and is being used in my modern social problems class (hence my presence).

  • ya right bs men LOVE that anything eles is trash to them aint you supposed to be smart?

  • awesome video. very good acompyning music! nice choices

  • 0:45 - WTF??

  • Omg.. unbelievable!

My dad called me from my room because I'm half cooking dinner / watching this. The foil caught fire or something... dads exact words.

"You should become more familiar with the kitchen Abbey, with cooking and clean like a real women" ... Oh I flipped!

-- Btw, I love your video, I actually recall some facts I've read before like with the 80,000 ads kindergarten thing, and the image at 6:39 was one from Americas next Top Model (Or Australias?)

  • great video, thx. im studying feminism in university so this video is helpful.

  • i want to be a homemaker. i love mr. clean

  • When they first showed that Dove commercial with regular sized women. Everyone was so aww struck that non-skinny women can be beautiful. They always were beautiful.

People be conscious of the media. It fucks your head up if you don't pay attention.

  • Since when did women care what men think. There are more women now in the advertising and marketing than there were 20 years ago, and things still haven't changed. Instead they've gotten worse. Pussy Cat Dolls, Girliscious, Britteny Spears, Hollywood and their magazines. It's all B.S. Stop playing into their(the systems) mind games.

  • Kenwood Chef ad "The Chef (their product) does everything but cook - that's what wives are for!" HOLY SHIT! My jaw dropped to the floor and my eyes popped out of my head when I saw that ad. That looks like a pretty recent ad. What year did it come out? FUCK Kenwood I'm not buying any of their products EVER.

  • and ur probly one of those super skinny robotic females

  • nope I'm not super skinny at all. I wake up in the morning cook breakfast for my husband, work out and do my makeup and watch what I eat. I care about my appearance, and I don't try to make others who are prettier than me feel like they shouldn't be. I am a well rounded person. I'm intelligent, artistic, driven and a fun person to hang out with. It's not that difficult. Quit trying to prove a pint and come out of your bubble.

  • ok there bimbo girl

  • well then u probly dont have to go through with what many girls do. the media is very affective and although you think for yourself when ppl look at you and judge you because they think ur not pretty enough or skinny enough like the girls on tv ull start having the same perception...and im not trying to prove a "pint" (as you spelt it) at all because its proven by itself

  • go easy on her she is only a bloude with big boobs no brains:)

  • I don't wake up looking perfect tin the AM- no one does, I'm just willing to make an effort! AND I don't try to make others feel bad about it! People by nature want to look attractive. Trying to achieve something that's not good for you isn't healthy, but there's nothing wrong with setting a goal and an ideal for YOURSELF and achieving it.

Do you make the honor students in school feel bad for getting A's when you get C's? Do you do your best, or fail to prove a point?

  • by the way I'm sure you've never made a spelling mistake in your life have you? Oh no wait you did "spelt" isn't even a word it's "SPELLED" if you want to be petty about dumb shit.

  • spelt is the british and canadian pass tense of spell

  • You'll only be as pressured as you allow yourself to be, CherryPoppah.

  • Women feel pressured to look good, by and large, because they know intuitively - whether they'll admit it or not - that men place a huge emphasis on looks. I'd say at least 95% of a woman's value as a mate is based on her appearance. Unfortunately, their efforts are mostly in vain, since what men find attractive (symmetry, .7 hip/waist ratio, etc.) is mostly genetic.

  • holy how the heck did i ever get a guy lol

  • WOW!

this video was so good i feel so enlightened

    thank you so much!

  • eaglesforever makes me sick.

there are plenty of men who see us as sex symbols and homemakers who dont measure up if we arent skinny enough.

  • its so easy for people like you to play the sexism card and seem intelligent and emotionally aware of soceity. your video provokes people into thinking that the problems that are facing the women of today are caused by perverted sexist white men working in the maintream media. womens insecurities with their looks are the individual womens' fault, they are to blame for their own bulimia, anorexia and chronic lack of confidence-not men. STOP PLAYING THE BLAME GAME.

  • Here, here.

  • wow your stupid. our entire humanity revolves on blaming people. Yes it is somewhat wrong. But think of this way. Users like sugerplum are only creating awareness for people. im a guy and im looking at this for a project. and what sugerplum said is pretty much rational, not blaming. The source of all this sexism and depression is through advertisments, people are only trying to generate awareness of the source. Not blaming.

  • There are people who work in commercial advertising who have psychology degrees, just so they can understand and develop ad campaigns that leave an imprint upon your mind to get you to buy their product.

But those images can influence a person's sense of self-worth, just the same as if someone was telling a woman outright she's fat and should be this.

Sugarplum was only stating the facts. Wasn't blaming a soul.

  • I was greatly impacted by this video. The choice of pictures, songs, and the message it brought were so well put together. I'm training Batterers facilitators next week and am going to show it to them. I think it will be very impactful. Thanks for you work.

  • This is a good video. I work for a domestic abuse program and we are considering showing it to our group. It's a group for abusive men who are mandated by court to attend. Most men in the group are surprised, when we show a video by Jackson Katz and how powerful a role the media plays in shaping the views men have of women and on the flipside how men are portrayed as having to be masculine and having it all together. It's not a realistic portrayal for men or women. Let the haters hate.

  • Great video!

  • ok hmm men have everything soooooo easy

  • Are you fucking kidding me? Men die at higher rates then women, women lives less stressful and longer lives. A man is 4 times that of women. Women generally live care free lives with very little responsibility.

  • hpufo: Very little responsibility? Haha, yes okay, source that please. You're just an asshole who doesn't understand that the stupidity of your (already idiotic) comment is heightened when posting on an "Images of Women in the Media" video. Where are your facts and sources for this information? If you have none, I can only assume you're relying on age-old stereotypes of both genders, which is portrayed through MEDIA, get it? Shit like you is the exact stuff this video preaches against.

  • Ok, well lets see. By society men are expected to have their own car, place, and job by the age of 21, otherwise they are seen as losers. What happens when a man has a child he does not want, can he has the woman abort it? NO. If she has the baby he would be forced to pay child support until the child is 18. Now what happens if a woman has a child she does not want? She can abort it, she can abandon it at safe haven spots, she can put it up for adoption, etc. Women are not responsible!

  • On terms of abortion, I agree with you that men should be able to "disown" the child if they want an abortion and the woman does not. But that's beside the point. This 21 thing... I don't even understand where you found that. (was it your magician's hat?) I don't even deem that as responsibility, as it's what most people strive for anyways, INCLUDING women. If you're so low as to deem yourself a loser because of this "rule", then you deserve the so-called "responsibility".

  • I got the 21 thing from society. Look at venomfang X for an example. He is 22 and lives with his parents, people constantly ridicule him for living with his parents. And when he got punished for his idiotic views, it was the laugh of the century. And how about rape cases. How many women are willing to admitting their fault in the rape? How many women are enough of a jackass to get themselves drunk and then charge a man for raping them, even if they did take advantage?

  • Those laws are set to protect the child not woman vs man, its the not child's fault that they were brought into this world and you think they should just have to be poor because you or any other guy doesn't want to pay child support? THAT is irresponsible. And any guy who has sex with a woman is taking the chance that she might get pregnant, that is a risk every time. and if you dont want to deal with the consequence of having a baby than think with your brain and not your penis.

  • @hpufo

"women generally live care free lives...etc"

Wow, I don't even know where to begin with this statement. It is so utterly wrong and unfounded that I'm shocked anyone would believe it, let alone SAY it. It's probably one of the more ridiculous things I've seen on youtube- or anywhere, really. Judging from this statement, I would assume you are not at all a woman, you have no children, don't understand the meaning behind those "statistics", and barely have a grasp on the English language.

  • @DeLaSoul246 If you cannot refute what I said, then shut the fuck up. I am willing to bet, that I have a far better understanding of those statistics then you do. And my grasp of the English language is quite fine thank you.

  • @hpufo Refute what you said? I'm sorry, you didn't say anything substantive enough to refute. That's my point. I ASSUME you meant that men die at a younger age than women?Yes, a difference of 2-6 years (how significant....). However, does that mean that the majority of women live care free lives with little to no responsibility? NO. That is a wildly illogical and asinine statement and the most ridiculous conclusion that can be drawn from that statistic, which btw, has NO agreed upon explanation.

  • @DeLaSoul246 80% of suicides are man. In currently 97% of the deaths in Iraq were all men. Out of all work related deaths men make up 93%. Men are more victim to all forms of violent crimes except for rape, and sexual assault. Society expects a man to work for a living, and to support himself and family. Society basically has no expectations for women. Working for a living is an option for a woman. Women aren't even held responsible for insuring that they do not fall into the toilet.

  • @hpufo Men are more likely to succeed when committing suicide. However, women suffer from depression twice as often as men (Not that it effing matters). Men do more physical work than women which makes them more susceptible to on-the-job injuries. Men are more victims to all forms of violent crimes, however, THEY are the perpetrators in the vast majority of cases. Yes, stereotypical and traditional views would have the man work and the woman stay-at-home.

  • @hpufo 2

that does not IN ANY WAY mean that working is an option for women. Women are far more impoverished in this country than men.On average, men have a higher standard of living than women-especially after a divorce.Women still do the vast majority of housework and childcare in families where both parents work. When the father doesn't work, the mother is more likely to work AND do ALL the housework and childcare. Society has many expectations of women and statistics absolutely reflect that.

  • @hpufo 3 In addition, 97% of the deaths in Iraq are men probably because the majority of soldiers are men... The fact that you assume that when a woman is a stay-at-home mom, she isn't still working, shows that you are not recognizing the hard work women do.You are simply devaluing the work she does and then penalizing her for "not" working. If people in our society were less like you, and more open to flexible gender roles, men would be able to stay home too.

  • @hpufo 4 I would also like to see a source which supports the statement: "society basically has no expectations for women". Do the statistics you spewed out bring you to that conclusion? Because if so, I repeat what I said earlier, I don't believe you fully understand the statistics you are going off about at all and you are obviously not a woman. That is a completely absurd conclusion to come to based on those statistics.

  • Excellent Video! Go media literacy. Thanks.

  • 8:43----Holy Cow, it's real simple to "Control the Media".....just phukin' turn it off....My TV is not plugged in! The only news I need is "what is happening in Congress?"

People need to wake up, and embrace their individual power! Don't let the media into your media....then we would have "one less sheeple, a million to go". Thanks for reading this message! Aloha, UnderseaCaveman

  • I never said and I don't believe that it is easy to excercise any form of control, regulation, etc. over the media, and it is also a good idea but unrealistic for people to only watch CSPAN, as mainstream mass media is still ingrained in people's lives. Media literacy seems to be the best option, which can help give viewers and consumers of mass media all the knowledge they need to make informed descions about the media & what it promotes. And we all should have more political knowledge also.

  • Oh dear Sugarplum,

You were never implicated (no jump so defensive)! Now that said, if the MSM (mainstreammedia) is "so engrained", then how is it that any "change" is to be expected. We (the people) should never settle for the state of engrainment! Fight, rise up, revolt, sister!

    Aloha, UnderseaCaveman

  • The idiots that don't understand this video should just be thrown out of the genepool, since their genes have way too much dumbness in order to be worth passing on.

You CAN'T look away, the media is EVERYWHERE and they are biased, sexist, racist and brainwashing at any turn they get. Guys that think that this is right only agree to it because they fear a woman with her own will can outdo them. Thats what the guys in the bible all feared, therefore held them down with brainwash and force.

  • Exactly, good comment. Drive through any medium or bigger sized town. Advertising is in your face, everywhere. Go to a supermarket and you are confronted by more media and images of women (makeup/products, magazine covers). And you can't cut yourself or your children from media.

  • Really great video welldone :)

The only bit i dont like is how u show the pro-ana and mia sites, because people could go on them now they know what they are :(

I know Im going to go on Fading obsession now.

  • Thanks for your comments. I showed the pro-ana sites to demonstrate how a key part of the media, the internet is contributing to these negative messages.

Don't bother with Fading Obsession, your better than that.

  • Yes, the miana sites, are all owned by the same person. its like people can't find other sites anymore, BUT those ones.....anyways, i really liked your video...but question why does it say Dana the 8yr old girl Anorexic, in the info, when that didn't come out 'til Oct,

but I think it made sometime last yr or the yr before that. and this video you made was uploaded in May....just wondering! well done again i loved it!

  • U did such a great job with this video and the songs. I just can't figure out why 'some people' regard ALL females as a waste of organs when it's actually JUST A FEW (compared to the population of women in the world) that go on to exploit themselves and alter their bodies. All the males do is conclude without thought.

  • That is really silly. If you look back on the kind of body types that have been considered sexy in the past, it is not stick-boy-thin.

  • I feel that in both videos that some of the songs played are extremely inappropriate and are counteracting the views being expressed by the text.

  • Of course they contradict the views expressed in the text, they represent the sexist nature of the music industry.

  • At least with being a "homemaker" its doing something that you can actually benefit from yourself. If you know how to cook and clean, then you can cook and clean for yourself, as opposed to getting breast implants is really only going to benefit you in your process of acquiring a mate.

  • This is such a good video. It shows the reality of this world. The girls that are represented in this video are unrealistic. It's hard to find girls with perfect bodies like the ones in the video. Each one of them stay all day without food or on drugs to look like this. But she ends up skiny and unhealthy. AND WHY??? what will she get out of this?...nothing. Women can be more than just a beautiful image. They can change and make a difference and be treated as men.

  • Uh... they actually do often show average men with above average women. And they don't show men as victims of violence. Why don't you go research the numbers yourself?

  • why do Kate Moss, Paris Hilton,Britney Spears, Madonna etc. keep showing their ass? Women are responsible!

  • fantastic fuckin video! the adds from the 50s were so funny! please make another!

  • Good job, I have to say that I totally get the point of this video, and that people must open their eyes and update their way of thinking.

  • soooooooo true... i'm glad someone speaks up besides me...hey... have you also notice how womyn are told to look like lil girls in order to be beatiful while guys have to look older

  • hell yea... christianity portrayed women as effeminate fools and sissy slaves. :|

  • Hollywood, TV stations, and the media are just flat out evil. They seem to live in their own little dreamworld with all sorts of drama based on race, sex, and countless other ridiculous things.

And unfortunately they shape america's thinking.

  • very educational. i learned a lot. actually my mom asked me to download it so she could use it in her gender studies class. i'm sure this will serve as an eye opener for her students. great job! mom says "thanks a lot" for providing a good material.

  • Thanks Im glad you liked it.

  • God this was a great video! You said everything I think (and many women I know) I m so thankful you made it. I just hope a few more people watch this and take something from it.

    Thanks

  • Thanks. I think the more that women and men know what the media is trying to do, the less of an effect it will have on people, especially their self esteem.

  • once the media changes, then women will feel great about who they are, how they look, and their place in the world- outrageous!! Advertising and/or business interests lie 99% in making a profit. Instead of spending time wailing and moaning against media that is deaf to anything bur rising or falling profit margins, it is better to focus energy on selectively boycotting or endorsing the products they offer.

  • I understand your point. I made this video to raise awarness on this issue and to encourage people to use media literacy and to take action against advertisers and the media.

The media is a socilaizing agent, so it DOES play a part in the way women feel about themselves.

  • Ah hell no, dude. That's just so non-progressist...and you're at the wrong place to prove your point.

  • They do the SAME thing for males so I don't know what your beef is with. Do they show out of shape men on commericals? No, it's normally a guy with a six-pack and 'pretty boy' face. You don't hear us bitching about that do you?

  • That's your fucking problem, mate. Anyone who's not getting up to get what they want will remain unsatisfied. I am bothered when I see what's going on around and if I wanna complain, I'm gonna do it, thank you very much.

  • Your bothered that sexy woman and men are shown in TV ads promoting a product? Uh, I don't see why, the person who promoting that product in the commerical is getting paid MILLIONS of dollars to do so. Hell I'd do a commerical for a million bucks in the nude if they wanted. My point is, nobody forces you to watch them and nobody forces them to show their bodies. You have eyes in your head, turn the channel or shut up about it.

  • turn off your TV....or only watch CSPAN!

Thanks, you will help reduce the sheeple population by one! UNPLUG NOW!

  • Cool...nice job.

  • Thanks

  • Good video

  • Thanks
