Of all the cars mentioned here the only one I wouldn't want to race or own is the Sierra. Your lucky if you couldn't buy them in Oz! A mate of mine had four (at the same time) usually there was only one running at any given time! A dog to drive the RS500 just threw lots of fuel and air in, result - massive power and torque and then chuck your engine block away at the end of a race weekend because it'll be full of cracks. Nasty chassis too, horrid, horrid car
being a petrolhead peter brock is by far australias greatest sporting hero. Those guys like moffat brock geohegan etc fuck they had some balls driving those old cars.Unlike other sports these guys took the ultimate risks as they could have easily ended up being killed.
Brock was pure class, at his best he ruled the mountain he was like a machine lapping everyone as if they stood!! Brock and Holden were unstoppable and this was one of his greatest wins, the others were 1984 last of big bangers" and his first Bathurst win 1972 when he beat the almighty Ford GTHO 351 V8 in a little Holden ah!! that's right it was a 6 cylinder.....ha....ha...ha eat your heart Ford fans!!
I think Ford put just as much into the sport, it's just a case of drivers that make the difference, Ford have had there run for instance Moffat in the 70's won a few times and now Loundes is unbeatable, so you have to give Brock his due.
I've given Brock his due. He's a great driver, it just so happens that this car is one of the most successful race cars of all time... Ford does put a lot of resources into the sport, but unlike Holden, they do A LOT in many other sports as well.
He was a true legend of the sport. No one could nurse a car like he could. On the other side of the coin frozen, you mentioned the '72 win with the little Holden/Opel 6 beating the mighty Ford V8. Wasn't there a time in the 80s when the big, almighty Holden V8 was thrashed by a even smaller Ford 4cyl with less than half the capacity? Each era has it's champion car. From XU-1 to GTHO, A9X, Sierra, GTR, BMW635i etc. BTW, I am neither a Ford or Holden fan. I am a fan of the racing.
I agree every era had great race cars of all different makes some of my favourites are the HK-T-G Monaro, Torana XU1, Torana A9X and the GT Falcon Coupe, the reason for mentioning the 72 race is Ford supporters forget that the GTHO wasn't unbeatable and the Torana was a six but not an Opel but a Holden 202 engine.
Just like the GTR wasn't unbeatable. If anything the Sierra dominated more than the GTR did but there wasn't as much complaining about that. At least you could buy a GTR from the showroom! I just mentioned about the 202 engine being based on an opel engine as I remember an old friend of the family years ago visiting from Europe years ago saw the 186 under the bonnet of our ute and said, "ah, Opel engine". Nothing wrong with basing an engine off another in the 'empire'!!! ;-)
I really don't think you can compare the XU1 and the Sierra? When the XU1 replaced the GTS Monaro most poeple laughed at the thought that this small 6cyl car could compete against the GTHO? so it made it a a "David vs Goliath Battle" while the Sierra was far more advanced than the Commodore and everyone in motor racing new it, which is why many top drivers switched to them leaving everyone without a doubt who would win in 88' and 89'
the holden red 6 was based off of the chevrolet inline 6 actually and the grey motor in the 48-215 right up to the EJ was a GM-H design
The only Opel/Vauxhall based Holdens are the HB Torana (Vauxhall Viva) and the VB to VL commodores (Opel Rekord), but they always ran Holden motors..except for the VL which ran the Nissan RB30 as we all know
The Opel/Vauxhall equivalent in Europe was more than likely based off of the same chevy inline 6, so yeah they are both US based designs in the end
@mafiand I could have this wrong, but I understand that after the war the US went rebuilding in Europe, and gave some old tooling for cars and stuff to the Opel subsidiary. The Australians came looking for tooling about the same time and got the exact same stuff. What they all got was the 1928 Chev straight 6, which I think was about 131 cubes to begin with. I have been told it was chevie's first overhead valve engine. The last version made in Au was fuel injected and made about 160hp.
@frozen4N20 Colin Bond won the '72 race for brook. He went out super hard and the Falcons had to chase after him or risk losing. They wrecked their cars trying to keep up qualifying pace with Bond. Bonds car also blew up and Brook just did a Sunday drive to the win. Colin Bond = Greatest team player ever!
Well the simple fact of the matter is that every driver will have some form of racing that fits their style best. Brainman needs to understand that there have been countless (more bad ones than good ones) piss poor F1 drivers, when you compare them to Hamilton, Senna, etc. I'll agree that on a whole, F1 has the best in the world, but, odds are that Brocky could beat 90%, or more of them, in these cars.
brianman has no clue does he, i like the way he compares drivers yet i never did get to see brokie in a F1 car, i wonder how good he would have been,, your talkin two different types of cars so dont compare the drivers. your a fool and any true motorsport fan wouldnt even go down the road you just have. like to see you swing that A9X around that track n beat the 2nd placed car by 6 laps,, actualy id like to see ANY other driver repeat it, F1 included.
Come off it - you cant even compare a mere tin-top driver to ANY of the 800 F1 drivers in history - they are in a whole different league. Senna or Schumacher could beat brock blindfolded or blind drunk or both!
i agree that senna is the greatest driver in history, and shu up to around 2000 was really good to, f1 is shit now the use a little button to change gears, no clutch no skill
@Brainman94 If you knew anything about Brock his feet where to big to drive F1 cars Senna or Schumacher would crash a car like this takes real skill to drive with one arm on the door like its a sunday drive but thats our Brocky raced street cars.
@TheDemonsarehere You dont understand race car driving if you think that - its the OPPOSITE - driving with one arm on the door like a sunday drive proves that its, well ... as easy as a sunday drive! You can't do that in F1 as they pull 5G's (thats almost enough to pull ur eyeballs out - they gotta hold on for dear life let alone car control!. 1990s F1 compared to 70's tin top is like flying an F18 jet fighter compared to flying a kite in the park!
@mallamoozoo Why did all the Bathurst drivers have both hands on the wheel and Brocky hardly never while he was laping most drivers if you dont understand this then you know nothing about motor sport driving these old cars with road tyres and stock brakes takes alot of skill and your are trying to compare race cars that are fully engineered with a budget that runs into millions when this is 1979 with a $5000 grand car he had to take it easy in the A9X because the gearbox was to weak
@Brainman94 Don't agree either, Brock was a freak, and when he was in his 30's he could have adapted to anything as proven by his success in rally and sports sedans. He was as good as anyone in the world in the late 70's.
I was there in 1979. I only made Bathurst 4 times and Brock won each one. You know why the event has lost it's charm? The cars are all the same and the pace car will appear 1 hour from the end to close it all up and raise potential TV ratings. Is is now just so boring
These cars were so slow the record books should tear the pages out - a go kart would be faster everywhere but the straights. Pathetic! Open-wheelers rule!
They often race on the same tracks - The Grand Prix and Indy tracks (Adelaide, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Eastern Creek, Phillip Island) and many other tracks. I think it's only bathurst that open-wheelers can't run as the run down the hill would damage the wings (though there have been some open-wheelers races there at times).
What I mean is why does anyone care about tin-tops when open-wheelers are half a minute faster PER LAP?
I don't get it! Perhaps it's just that open-wheelers look more like aircraft than everyday cars - but so what that's just superficial - who cares about the shape - it's the perormance that matters.
The simple answer for that question is that #1 everyone likes different things and #2 I watch both, I'm not going to start disrespecting the sport of V8 Supercar because F1 is running 45 seconds faster a lap. History shows that slower cars with less electronically control make for better racing than high powered, electronically controlled cars. Do I like open wheel racing more? Yes, but I don't go around calling all other forms of racing pathetic. Respect racing for what it is, racing...
It's a ridiculous argument - horses for courses I say, but I will add that my preference is for open wheelers, no mud guards or tin roofs on those cars!
An absolute Bathurst Classic. Brocky on his way to the top. What a champ then and for all time....I remember watching that race and being absolutely in awe of the precision and speed that Brocky could extract from the mountain killing A9X. Such a good looking and sounding car with Brocky doing lap records with his elbow on the window waving to the crowd.
The highlight year of brock's career? Set the lap record for qualifying (at 2.20) - Lead every lap of the race, finished 6 laps in front and set the lap record for touring cars on the last lap (he tried to do the same in 78 but was baulked in the dipper). What a guy, RIP Peter.

The slot car racing of today just doesn't compare to this - the real thing. And is there any sound like all those carburetted V8s?
Now we've got fuckin' traction control, adjustable brake bias and drivers that ride exercise bikes and have personal trianers. What bullshit.
Thank fuck historic touring racing has been a hit!

Peter Brock very briefly raced in Australian Formula 3 many years ago.
He decided though that "tin tops" were his forte and he had a long and successful career racing saloon, sport-sedan and rally cars.
Each to his own!
Current Aussie F1 driver Mark Webber has always raced open wheelers and has said he has no interest in V8 Supercars.
