I Graduated High school in 1980 so I am somewhat familiar w/ the sorted history of the Fiero.I recall the only way GM would let Pontiac go fwd with their Mid engine, Indi suspension, 4 wheel disc braked, plastic paneled, lightweight 2 seater was if it was packaged as a economy commuter. Smokey Yunick built a 150 hp 4 cyl w/ a pre-heated fuel vaporizer that got 50 MPG, 0-60 in under 6 sec. in 1984!! Built a 300 hp 3 Cylinder and several Carburated engines that 1.8 hp per cu inch!! GOOGLE IT!
So now you know why GM would never let Pontiac put a turbo V6 or V-8 in a Fiero GT back in the 80s. It would have spanked every thing on the road while knocking down 30 MPG. How STUPID were those guys?
@sbd45acp The truth of the matter is GM wanted the fiero to fail because of the stolen sales FROM the corvette. It was never intended for the car to evolve into a "sports racer" so to speak although future plans and designs had intentions of doing so. It was meant to be an economical commuter car at an effective price. There was a huge article entitled "The rise and fall of the fiero" in newsweek magazine way back in the early '90's exposing the real truth behind GM and the very capable fiero.
Hahaha this man has an excellent point! GM let Pontiac put the turbo in thoes 89 turbo trans ams and look what happened! Was the fastest production car for 89!
Cant imagine what would have happened if V8s or turbos were stock on fieros O.o
@TheHm3 back in the day, (especially the 1988 GT or Formula models), the Fieros were respectable. Even today they beat many cars in acceleration and cornering. If you just tune them a little with a blower or turbo, the just mooooove! Plus they're an overall blast to drive. If you get the chance to drive one, jump at it.
Someone inform me, were Fiero's quick at stock at the times they were built? Because GM's working on the C7 and they're planning to make it a modern day Fiero. (10k rpm, 3 liter displacement, 2,800 pounds, 400 horses).
We could argue this all day, I agree they weren't that fast, but they had torque. So light to light, it would be interesting against lets say a supercharged Z24 (stock) against a stock 2.8l fiero, but it wouldn't take long for the cavalier to pull away. A regular 2.2l cavalier, no competition from a dead start, Fiero would do nothing but pull away. Highway speeds, I have no personal xp. 3.8l mustang 98, the Fiero will take from a dead stop light to light, but there r many variables
@bloodseedrums Don't pawn that line so many use to describe Hondas because it doesn't fly for the Fiero bud. The Fiero had great styling like a little Ferrari. So the way it looked and being swapped to beat almost everything in the street? Shoot, it's win win.
@bloodseedrums Yeah and what's wrong with a Fiero? Spell it out for me? You said "It goes fast but at the end of the day it's still a Fiero". That's a slander comment. What are you trying to say? Here I'll help you. Are you trying to say that a Fiero GT is a piece of shit? Do tell.
hey i want to do a engine swap with lingerfelter! i want to start my project off with a 378 CID LS9 Supercharger Pulley Upgrade - 680 HP Engine By Lingerfelter...but my question to my fiero brothers and sister is can i do that?
@badabingcorporatemob Your gonna need a Porsche and maybe even a ZF Transaxle to do that and lots of fabrcation. Even then your better off just doing an L67 swap with a Turbo.
@badabingcorporatemob Why buy a lingerfelter engine? They're a waste of money in my opinion. Just build an engine yourself, even if you want it to be a v8. But might I add, there's people running 10s with v6s, and these are very dependable v6s that are yielding these numbers... So consider a v6's gas mileage, dependability, and just as equal power :P
@badabingcorporatemob Yeah it's possible, but axles are going to restrict you a bunch. I personally would stick to a 6 cylinder fiero. They've already proven to easily get Fieros into the 10s and 11s, after that, I mean that engine is going to run you big bucks. Vs a 3600sc, that's a 300-600$ engine with a transmission slapped to it already. Plus the swap is basically under the belt already, seeing how it's been done hundreds of times.
priceless i am doing the same 3800 SC conversion myself this spring... nice you got it to hook up like that. what 3800 motor do you reccomend likek from the bonniville SSei or the grand am gt or grand prix gt any suggestions? and besides the motor i know you can use the stock fiero tranny or the one that came with the motor and besides those costs, just haveing it go down the road with the 3800 SC motor wjat do you think that the costs for the brackets and others would add up to be? thanks
@MNguinsGOON You should link them the Fiero beating a ZR1. Youtube search it.
The big difference here, and that fiero beating ZR1s, is the track.
A prepared track, yeah, a corvette has a HP advantage.
But at an UNPREPARED track or STREET, the fiero has traction advantage, and LOTS of it. Even with crappy tires. 600+lbs of engine, plus transmission, axles, and more... Right on top of the traction based wheels. The fiero gets instant traction, rest of the fiero leans back on wheels, win.
I haven't ran the quarter yet. The nearest 1/4 mile track where I live takes a while to get there and if I break I don't have a car trailer to tow it back. Plus, if I run too fast without more safety equipment (5 point seat harness/ roll cage) they won't let me run again. I'd be a good story, but it would suck.
@GuitarFiero That sucks. Yours might be the fastest fiero I've seen thus far. At least in the 1/8th mile. 11.3 about the fastest quarter I've seen. Another 3.8 scII of course. Those big v8s just can't seem to compete
For those looking to wag fingers at a VETTE, taking a heavily modded drag car up against a lot stock C5, even the C5 Z06 which barely matches a standard C6, is laughable. Just watching the video it was even a competition. If this were a race of equals the results would be much closer or even reversed.
Most cars < 200hp can beat 99% of the Corvettes on the road because the owners are all so old they do not want to tip over their Oxygen bottles with too hard an acceleration. The ones young enough to drive fast usually dont know how because they spend all their time buying hats, jackets, flags and custom stitched Corvette bath mats.
Just stfu next time and congratulate the winner of a race that was proud of the run you old prick.
@lothre And some youths can't seem to see the forest for the trees. Why don't you look at the race with the eyes of and older driver and racer instead of those of a punk kid. I stand by my comment. So, shut your own mouth, fool.
@DocWolph You say it was not a fair race because the Fiero was modified? it also cost 1/10th the price of the Vette even with the mods. A fair race would be to race a car of similar cost to the Vette then? If Vette owners are going to get bent out of shape every time one gets beat up on in a race, then don't be a hypocrite, only race your Vettes against a car you consider a 'fair race'......or is it alright as long as the Vette wins. Then you wont feel the need to piss in everyones beer here.
@lothre I'm not as upset as you about this. I'm just more realistic about what happened and why, not whether or not it was fair or not. I never used to words "fair race". Children complain about fairness, which is why adults make rules to define it. Anyway, I don't view a modded Fiero acing a stock Vette as a great victory. Put hot rods up against other hot rods then you get a real race, not some guy showing off for Youtubers.
@DocWolph\ You want near identical for races...boring. They are both GM cars, they are both 2 seaters. You have an unrealistic racing code of honor. I have seen people race at the strip with cars in completely different leagues of cost and class for money. And I have seen some upsets where very expensive and 'exotic' cars were beaten by cheap modded beaters. They seemed fine with it. You can't you be? Cars do not need to be following 'your' rules to be fair. The Vette lost, live with it.
@lothre Why can't I be okay with it? I am. The race was run in fun. You have a problem with me pointing out that a heavily modified Fiero ran drag vs a stock Vette and me NOT being such a sheep as to jump on the "Vettes suck" bandwagon. I gave my 2 cents on it and no one else has been upset by it. So why can't you be okay with it?
@DocWolph even competition????????? you can build a 3.8 sc fiero for a months pay check,,,,,,,, where can i get a C5 for that???? Congrats to the fiero,,, im sure you have a lot more $ in yours,, im just sayin
@IRONSEAN7 Party's been over a while, bub. BTW where the devil do you work that you could throw down to build a Mod Fiero on a week's pay? If you made that kind of scratch, you'd buy a Corvette anyway.
It has a XP cam, ported and polished heads, 1" 7/8 headers to full 3" exhaust to the exhaust dump, 42.5lb injectors, stainless valves, stock throttle body (on that race; now I have an LS1 80mm), stage II water to air intercooler, i believe this race I had a 3.0 pulley on, ported blower housing and intake manifold, and a stock bottom end (except for ARP rod bolts) with stock rockers. I did all the engine and machining work myself.
The Z06 ran a 8.5. His best at this track is an 8.4. I will agree that this track isn't too great with traction on Thursdays (like this day), but on race days, it is much better.
