Much of Ranma 1/2 is an exploration of gender roles. Akane is the classic TOMBOY type ... that is, a female with certain Yang behavior. So a TOMGIRL could be a male with genuine Yin energy. Ranma and Akane are of course set up together because of their situations. Ranma has a forced androgyny (something God or fate did). Akane is naturally androgynous.

Well, like I say in the translation notes, most of the first verse is made up by me (because of the difference in syllable length). I think I did a mediocre job.

What I am most proud of is the chorus. The translations I looked at all had it as some variation on "This song I sing for you". I looked at the original Japanese, (even though my Japanese is very poor), and it translates directly as "gift".

No doubt the verb (gift) takes on the attribute of the noun (song) and becomes "sing" in a correct translation. However, it gave me the idea to phrase it as "This song, my gift to you" instead. Which I think is perfect for capturing the essence of this song and Akane's relation to Ranma.

I think that phrase is what I really love most about this song.
