  • the line "my pain is self chosen" is so purely honest....miss u, Layne....

  • ... and now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see.

  • This song fucking wrecks me. Literally gives me chills and makes me weep. With all honesty one of the biggest regrets in my life was not seeing Alice In Chains and Mad Season live. I still remember where I was/what I was doing the day I heard Layne died. I loved him but I had never even met the guy. THAT'S an influential musician. And y'all are right: NOBODY makes music like this anymore. R.I.P. Layne. Hope you found peace.

  • Nobody makes music like this anymore and I doubt anyone ever will... a sad thing to realize.

  • @markbussell42 u just got to keep the faith thats what am doing my friends play instruments so i got stuck singing and we kind of dryfted apart and now there playing were ever they can with whoever they can but i told them im ready when they are.....I am thinking now i should try and find other people that enjoy playing music even if we do suck practice will take care of that holler at me ppl if u d b int. in playing

  • i bet the guitar guys even got laid

  • What can I say that hasnt already been said. R.I.P. Layne

  • "That no addict need ever die from the horrors of addiction..."

  • R.I.P. Layne ♥

  • All of you guys tweaking about "Oh, Layne's so good hurr durr" please pay attention to the guitar in this song. Thanks.

  • @devonhart1980 McCready is a god

  • @devonhart1980 Oh shut up, everyone knows who Mike McCready is and how good he is...

  • Layne was one of a kind in his voice and music,I grew up with his voice and will forever miss him.he wrote and sang from his heart and soul something you just don't see alot of anymore the day he passed was a major major loss in music,RIP his pain is over

  • what's amazing is, as far down the river as Layne was at this point,

he was born with god-given talent .... nobody can teach you that,

you're born with it, love you Layne

  • Amazing.voice, an with Mike from Pearl jam! Great.

  • Anyone know the exact size of the drummers china cymbal? 27"?? That thing looks deadly

  • RIP Layne Staley...

  • forever in my head, sounds bad ass!! RIP Layne, & Mike....

  • im 21 now but i will be listening to this for the rest of my life. long live good music and good people cheers.

  • Who the fuck could dislike this? wtf

  • There is so much talk about Layne and his using. So what???? He was a genius, his vocals are The best. No wonder he hid from all you people judging him all the fucking time. RIP my brother. Sleep in peace. I miss you

  • I'm a heroin addict, so I guess my pain is self chosen. what does one do when he is not happy unless he has a score brewin in the works?? You use every day that's what.

  • @myPAINisSELFchosen85 Wahhh! Help me! I'm Depressed!

  • R.I.P YOU ARE MISSED.....

  • I don't know if Layne was high in this video, he embarked on the Mad Season project after or perhaps during one of his stints with rehab, it doesn't really matter, eventually he picked up the needle again. Part of me wishes he hadn't done that, since he'd still be with us, but the fact is, we all know most of the greatest songs he ever wrote were about his struggle, and maybe we'd not have those at all. I don't know, I guess, I just wish he was still with us, wish the help would've worked RIPGOD

  • @beardly01 Agreed man, it's kind of sick in a way. His downfall and abuse of the needle brought us the most joy through his music...

  • i love this performance, so honest and brutally beautiful....it's silly people bicker back and forth about topics such as pity for Layne Staley. Just enjoy the music. He sung his lyrics as if wearing his heart on his sleeve, so yeah, he was not asking for pity, he was sharing himself with the world thru self expression, and did a fucking great job. So lets all just miss him, and respect him.

  • @kaimae1212 Well put my friend,well put!!

  • @kaimae1212 Nicely said!!

  • @kaimae1212 Well fuckin said!!!!

  • @kaimae1212 Right on! I just listen to the great music and think of the old days. Whatever happened was meant to be, I just wish there could have been more great Mad Season albums recorded. Layne will never be forgotten and goes down as one of rocks all time great frontmen. And drugs are bad mmmK, although I must admit I still get high and jam this great music!

  • @1976Stratomaster Always without pity, he done EXACTLY what he ultimately wanted to do, and for that I respect The Man!

  • @1976Stratomaster What I mean was, he really did not want to quit using or he would have, no arguments please, because this is the TRUTH.......All Respect for whatever he chose to do. It does not make a difference I will listen to his music forever.

  • @1976Stratomaster Fuck yeah, dude. Listening to this while high will make you see God.

  • @kaimae1212 : and I respect you 2.....

  • is this 96?

  • @bojanks15 1995

  • @bojanks15 its 95

  • epic performance

  • bozi txaes

  • kunem moret

  • I'm tired of people offering their sympathy to Layne as if he wanted it or requested it. I'm pretty sure he could've gave a damn about it. In fact I'm positive he could've gave a shit about all the soft ass crap people post about him. Layne wasn't a puppy that needed a hug! He was a kickass Rockstar who lived the lifestyle to the fullest! He didn't need anybody's sympathy then and he sure in the fuck doesn't need it now! I mean get real retards! Let's focus on his music- not his fucked up life!

  • @TOMIN209 Right on man

  • @TOMIN209 On the other hand i could just say you're a retarded bastard and completley miss the point of why people have sympathy for Layne... They were touched by his music, his art, his pain; he expressed that he was thankful people understood him through his music in his last interview with Adriana Rubio. No he never asked for sympathy but when music like his is about such struggles with his demons then it's natural to have sympathy for him... Your comment really is stupid.

  • @danathor99 Awwww...did I infringe upon some kinda emotional connection you have with Layne.I'm sorry you soft ass bastard! You're right, people have every right to act like they knew him and post a bunch of sad stories( most fake by the way) in an attempt to build a bridge between themselves and him. It's his PAIN,not yours!Quit trying to share it with him!And just because you feel this way about Layne doesn't make u a better fan than anyone. You need a hug,homeboy....

  • @pmejia14 Oh god... Learn to read, or if you are capable of reading to a decent standard, don't take things out of context and create something completley irrelevant to what i put... In a nutshell i told you not to piss all over what other people think, just because you have some obvious issues, doesn't mean other people aren't entitled to have feelings and opinions about something they like... it's not about who's the better fan, you just need to grow up you petty, small minded idiot.

  • There is absolutely no one that could ever compare to Layne! What an amazing voice!!!

  • 2:07 mucho loko

  • I often have this irrational thought that maybe one day Layne'll resurface and tell us all that his death was a prank - kinda like Jim Morrison coming out of the jungles of Africa with his buddy Elvis, and saying "Surprise!" I wish it were so.

  • I can't think of any bad performances by Layne. He always had such passion i his voice.

  • this song takes me away

  • @aldana360 ...far, far away.

  • maybe my favourite band!

  • Layne music is so moving! I just feel so bad that he felt so lonley and felt the only way he can express himself was through his music!RIP Layne and now you can rest and not worry about those horrible drugs! I know the angels are taking care of you!

  • AIC will never be the same without layne and william will never sound like layne! RIP layne and you will always be loved!

  • my brother introduced me to this song and it's deep

  • Speechless, absolutely speechless. One word though.........LAYNE!

  • 22 people are senile ladies

  • Layne Staley.... damn auto correction.

  • I agree redsunshine... great song by mad season, rip laymen Stanley we miss ya.

  • 22 people must buy a brain.

  • they sound better live!!!!

  • ive recently hit rock bottom in life. i contemplate living all day. his music makes me feel better.

  • @chibama2 keep your head up bro, it'll pass. trust me, been there before.

  • @chibama2 Listen to what the song says "pain is self chosen" you can get out of it , I was there as well, its very hard but there is always a ray of light somewhere you have to fight like hell to find it , but its there.

  • @chibama2 i do not know you but im glad your still with us no reason to end it life will always hand you shit

all you can do is mold and make a use item i know how you feel i have been pulling my self up the last 8 months i was homeless and job less then a person from my past help pull me up turn to the ones closest to you they will help stay strong my human friend stay strong

  • @chibama2 YOUR NOT ALONE!

  • good god layne knew how to write what he felt such a beautiful song about what he was living

  • I suffer from Bipolar Disorder, and whenever I feel like ending my life I always think of Layne and this song. I always think about how much he himself has suffered and how no one helped him. Layne did something special for all of us, he gave us a voice in our darkest hours. Layne in a way is there for us in spirit.

  • @XFry333X keep strong nothing is worth ending your life life is a beautiful place i know just how you feel

i deal with the same thing its an everyday battle stay strong my human brother stay strong

  • @XFry333X Yours is one of the most beautiful comments I've read on YouTube in some time. And I agree with you about Layne - he did understand suffering...and his music and voice is there, speaking for all of us in our hours of greatest pain. I really wish you well - lots of luck dealing with Bipolar - that's a tough thing, and I really hope that you can get and keep control of it. Take care!!!!

  • For me personally, the greatest thing Alice, Mad Season, Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden did for me was draw me back into hard rock/metal after being chased away by the screechy hair bands of the 80s that all seemed to share the same front man! Suddenly no frills, no glam, no throw away "Oh baby due me!" lyrics. All power & craft, no pretense!

  • Don't know where you got this clip but KILLER! Thanks for sharing the wealth! I've seen many good shows there but would love to have seen this one. Seattle had a great live scene w/many bands that didn't "make it" like the Allies, Mondo Vida, Duffy Bishop & the Rhythm Dogs, love seeing Mad Season in such an appropriate setting. Peace!

  • I think Layne was such a talented musician i just cant believe he is gone. The music today wil never compare to the music in the 90's. I dont care who sings for AIC they wil never be Layne Staley.

  • Heard that. So strange because there is nothing contemporary to compare it to. Not that there isn't good music happening now, but nobody makes music today like Seattle did back in the day, and very few artists sing about realistic and relatable issues.

  • Layne is loved im a recovering heroin addict godbless u layne

  • The music is undeniably beautiful and full of uncertain hope. The music conveys a sense of chosen hopelessness, of being lost, of being in pain. Contrast it with the music Johnny Cash made at the end of his life such as "Help Me". If only Layne had found the hope that could have given him the inner strength that ultimately comes from a higher power to lift himself out of addiction and to the true beauty of this world.

  • Damn dude! I know it hurt. Every time I hear your voice I get goosebumps, it feels the same with the junk in the veins call me sick but if it was not for heavy drug use from Thomas Alice n chains mad season would not be shit! But to leave at 6'1 86lbs is over kill Rip, brother One love!

  • Can't get enough of this song ever

  • Layne is beautiful inside and out always will be no matter what realm he is on...love and miss you Layne...

  • awesome

    repsect from Poland

  • His pain was SELF-CHOSEN, speaks volumes for Thomas Layne Staley. What a honest personality, he wrote and sang his songs about his drug use and wanted to inspire no one to immulate this. R.I.P. Layne 9 years later..

  • @MrPhakenayme he probably listened to the music to the point were he knows there won't be anymore performances from Layne,

  • @MrPhakenayme HE WAS STILL A HUMAN BEING. I HAVE A BROTHER WHO IS STRUNGOUT, TRIED TO HELP HIM A LOT. UNTIL HE STARTED, LYING, CHEATING, & STEALING. THE THINGS A PERSON DOES TO GET THEIR FIX IS WHAT MAKES THEM GOOD OR BAD. HE, LIKE LAYNE, HAD LOTS OF DEMONS. IT'S NOT YOUR PLACE TO JUDGE. BTW, I NAMED MY SON LAYNE; I TELL MY KIDS DRUGS ARE BAD, AND I AM HONEST ENOUGH TO LET THEM KNOW I HAVE DONE THEM, SO THEY KNOW HOW IT CAN SCREW YOUR LIFE UP. I KNOW I'M A GOOD FATHER. RESPECTFULLY, mrrekrap1

  • @MrPhakenayme My brother died of a drug overdose, does that mean his 7 year old daughter should condemn him, and not look up to him? For being so 'seasoned', you have a lot to learn. Just because you have the right to act like an idiot, doesn't mean you should always be exercising it.

  • mad season reminds me nineties, youth, alcohol, weed, bitches,...

  • awesome. first time ive ever listened to mad season

  • @MrPhakenayme

music is timeless dickwad. thats what music is about, just because i am young doesn't mean i cant appreciate good music. Age means nothing when it comes to music, its all feeling. I think your the one who needs to grow the fuck up! :)

  • Layne is just so special to me. He sings from his heart and soul, He helped me through some rough times with his music. i am sorry that I couldn't do anything for him when he needed help. R. I. P. my beautiful Layne, I love love U forever

  • SPEECHLESS...

  • damn you 240p, just damn you.

  • i love mike mc cready

  • aint that guitarist in pearl jam?

  • beautiful disaster dude

  • NO WORDS,,,,,,,,,JUST RAW EMOTION TIED TO MY SOUL. THANK YOU

  • music in the 90s was very well alive..miss those days when artist sang from the heart and didnt care how they looked in front of cameras.

  • wow .. no words

  • God damn it, I love this guy.

  • Layne Staley has about the best voice live ive seen yet. WHile he is not my fav, he is right up there, you cant beat his voice. Almost better live than on a cd!!

  • he's so different....

  • i love watching his live performances!!!!!!! hes my fav vocalist he oooozes pain i feel it....peep my channel i paint an i got badass fav videos an playlist

  • gettin laid to this song .... good times good times. life can be so good sometimes.!!

  • Live each day to the fullest and make every second count because we're not promised tomorrow.....Sleep peacefully beautiful angel Layne, your wings are no longer denied............

  • Mad Alice ~ Mad Season & Alice in Chains \m/....Please join a new facebook group...

  • Layne Staley's death was a huge loss to rock n roll

  • Love this song!

  • mccready was messed..

  • this band was absouletly incredible. the entire album was terrific

  • Layne had such a powerful voice yet he was able to touch your soul with kindness and reason.. Remarkable talent, just sucks no one was able to help him..

  • Love this song.....down oh down....down oh down....down oh down.....down oh down.....awesome!

  • being a recovering addict, i can identify. the wanting to get help for your problems is overcome by the wanting of your addiction. very very powerful and hard to overcome. i wouldn't have been able to overcome without the help of Subutex. i just wished that one day, Layne would have seen another option besides the one he chose. we all are a little better since he chose to grace us with his presence and music. thanks for sharing your gift with us Layne. i know you are up there with Mike and Dime.

  • Layne was an Unique Person... RIP Brother !

  • RIP Layne.

  • i want this to be played at my funeral

  • Simply amazing

  • Oh down so many roads with the same exit when reason comforts all to see yay we swim towards our self chosen...

  • Rest in peace layne you was a god...

What a fucking nice song... We love the dirty Seattle sound...

When do you wanna hear some german-grunge you should lookin under

    Drunken Hippies Sad things

    Peace & much love

  • too many now try... these kind.. just were....

  • @ncsak310 Yes

  • @ncsak310 agreed

  • layne and mike

  • Beauty and agony..............

  • After Shannon, Kurt and Layne passed it is almost as if music (good music that is) was put on hold. Maybe somewhere, right now as we speak, a future genius is being born. One can only hope...

  • @kpboland1969 They're out there now. They just can't get their music to the people because the internet has destroyed the industry. Now, record companies only put their money and backing behind sugar pop stars like Katy Perry. They can't afford to take chances on something different and good like they did in the early 90's. We've buried today's Hoons, Cobains and Staleys.

  • @J0hnyUtah Agreed my friend, agreed.

  • self chosen is right...then...necessity

  • .......speechless........

  • Awesome!!!!!

  • Does anyone recognize mike macready from pearl jam playing guitar ??????

  • Gotta love that song!

  • Hold it! Layne was with Mad Season??? I loved their stuff....but didn't know Layne was singing. When was this? Before AIC??

  • @kevbo7s How could you not know it was Layne? =\ his voice is so recognizable. Mad Season was active before the release of the self-titled AiC album.

  • @kevbo7s How could you possibly not know it was Layne being an AIC fan? I mean NOBODY sounds like Layne

  • Incredible.this song, this man was just so fkn real.

we really lost something amazing when he died. It will never happen again.

RIP Layne staley, forever in our hearts and souls.

    My pain is self chosen.

  • @xluxuryxsparks It will, unfortunately, happen over and over again. Layne was an incredible talent who was deeply hurting. Opiates are a powerful way to knock back that pain, but opiates are always a tragic dead end...they always have been, and the victims are as countless as the future victims will be. It is heart wrenching to know the conditions Layne died in. Absolutely heartbreaking. Stay clean or get clean. It is easy to stay clean and very hard to get clean. Choose life!

  • @ehukai26

Yes i agree with what you said :) what i meant when i wrote never gonna happen again was , there will never be another Layne Staley, he was truly amazing and original, no one can replace him :)

  • i miss layne... fuck. new aic record is good, but.. some bands cant go on with someone like him missing. we'll meet again soulbrother

  • My pain is self chosen.

    How true for him........damn.

  • @jgatorful It's true for everyone.

  • @voro122 I agree.

  • Danke das ich das noch erlebn durfte !! R.I.P Layne

  • Layne's hair is awesome.

  • i'd just cut my left arm just to see this show...really..pure emotion..

  • @andino444 what about your right arm?

  • my pain is heroin, therefor it is self chosen :(

  • this is the difference between modern music and music in the past. new music is all about making profit, music in the past was all about the music.. RIP Layne Staley

  • @Swagmeister33 if music was your career i think you would care about the profit too

  • @benjammin221 obviously, but i can't stand most of modern rock music because theres no feeling in it. It's all chopped up in a studio to sound good on the radio..

  • I bought a compilation cd this one time (at band camp 13 years ago), "Live at the Crocodile Cafe" which is in Seattle. I had never even heard of Alice In Chains but heard this song on that album and the crowds reaction and how great the song is; it's love. I'll never forget it.

  • Down. Oh down.

  • what year was that?

  • @KIPSELgate13 i think 94, 95

  • @KIPSELgate13 1995

  • Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see

  • Layne Staley is by far my favorite singer of all time. If he was involved, I own it and know every word to it. R.I.P brother.

  • For those who think we're addicts or suicidal. Unless you've experienced life as we have. You will never know how it feels. I am glad that you don't know. How can you judge someone until you have been there. You have no idea. Therefore don't presume to guess from the safety of your keyboard. Only those of us who pain rightfully will love this song with all our heart. You will never know how we have suffered and I could care less what you think. You will never matter to us.

  • @StuntStringer So very true.

  • Mudhoney T-shirt \m/

  • Layne is my favorite frontman of any band along with AIC being the best band of all time!!! My son is 9 years old and loves the chains. Mad Season is for the true Layne fans.

  • @shnydeewyo that's awesome, your son is lucky to get to listen to such good music from such a young age!

  • I love layne to with Alice in chains and mad season he could probaly fart in a bucket and I would love the way that sounds but I'am a very depressed person and sometimes I wonder if it makes me feel worse but I can;t stop listening to them.

  • @12889414 seek help!

  • @billwitt2010 you can't understand a users mind but try with your books and degrees.lol.

  • mad season rules

  • @TwistedUpinChains don't do it... i will pray for you things will get better

  • Awsome....

  • @TwistedUpinChains at least you have internet access.

  • Vevo has denied my access to the AIC Vevo channel and Mad Season Vevo channel just cause I live in Sweden..

  • @voro122 That is complete bullshit fuck vevo.
