I remember watching Mitch Miller when I stayed with my grandmother. What I liked was he'd sometimes put the words on the screen so you could follow along. This made the show more enjoyable for me.
When my daughter was 3 or 4 years old, her & I would watch this movie. She got VERY upset and cried when the the bridge was blown & the train crashed into the river! Great song from a great movie & great memories for me :-))
On a bus trip to Mexico City up in the highest mountain roads you can imagine some guy started whistling this and the whole bus joined in. Must been their way to help divert our fear off the crazy ride. I think most everyone was on tequila including the driver. I was 19. I realized flying was the safest way to go. LOL
I remember I once whistled this song on the way to class on the first day of school. I got like thirty people to join in with me and we all marched to our classes together.
@SmokeBojangles Acc-tu-ally, they are commie pinko bastard chaps who should be shot at dawn by a military firing squad - immediately after a fair trial and unnamious conviction by 12 good men and true. Hear bloody hear!!!!!
we have a tendency to overanalyse...this was great music for the times...i marched to it as a school-boy...my uncle faught in the jap theatre...and I remember him singing...cheer up! the skies will clear up & britain will fight and win...basically about overcoming adversity when you are down and out...and hence relevant whatever the theatre
The problem with the use of this in the movie is that the lyrics to the march referred to Hitler and his Generals and the movie was set in the Japanese theatre.
I heard tale of many British veterans that were in this battle actually despised this movie because they felt it was mockery of the actual suffering they went through.
@Omnikron228 It wasn't only that, Alec Guiness' part in it made that guy look a pratt, which apparently he wasn't. He would've blown that bridge like a shot to help the allies, he was a loyal British soldier to the end, nothing like he was portrayed in this. Add to that the bridge wasn't destroyed by sappers at all, it was hit by the Air Force and you can understand a lot of vets not thinking much of it.
@jboweruk It's a shame. It had great potential to it. I've wondered if many vets have the same feelings for The Longest Day, The Great Escape, and Guns of Navarone. Or do they like those movies much better?
@Omnikron228 I really don't know, I know one of the guys in "A Bridge too far" was actually there. But refused to play himself, instead playing his own officer...
Hahahahahaha!!!!! The testicles song!!!!! If you know the uncensored version with the lyrics you will understand exactly what I am talking about! LOL!
Seriously though, this is an absolute masterpiece and one of the most powerful and poignant marching songs ever produced!!!! Thank you!!!!
actually the officers were kept in a different camp with food water books and had little to do with the enlisted men read one fourteenth of on elephant to get a real picture not this hollywood load of crap
Actually this was a British marching song and it was sung when commonwealth soldiers were captured by the Japanese after Singapore! I know cos my Dad was a prisoner of the Japanese
Fantastic movie .. but the ending is entirely inaccurate .. the bridge still stands today - a monument to the agonising deaths of brave allied POWs in their hundreds of thousands at the hands of the brutal Japanese Empire of the time ..
mitch miller was the best! even though im 24, my mom used to play his Christmas album every year. i sometimes laugh now at the military style of "YOU BETTER NOT POUT, YOU BETTER NOT CRY, YOU BETTER NOT POUT IM TELLING YOU WHYY, SAN-TA CLAUS IS COM-ING, TO TOOWN."

Hitler has only got one ball, The other is on the kitchen wall, His mother, the dirty bugger, Chopped it off when he was small. She threw it into a conker tree It missed and went into the sea The fishes got out their dishes, And had scallops and bollocks for tea.
The guy who who composed this got the idea when he was playing golf. When he hit a ball really far, he would whistle the first two notes! So he came up with the rest of the song!

This is the "Colonel Bogey March", by Lt. F. J. Ricketts (1914), a.k.a. Kenneth Alford. "The River Kwai March" is an entirely different tune from the film, written by Malcolm Arnold in 1957.
@upajos M. A. composed in 1957 for the movie of March from the River Kwai, which is an instrumental counterpart to the tune whistled in the movie Colonel Bogey March. Under the title of March from the River Kwai, the march is generally identified and still be related to the war movie here. Mitch Miller arranged a medley of two marches, which can be heard at the end of the film. @ubsswp Thank you for the clarification. The same confusion occurs with the music from the movie "Picnic," which incidentally also stars William Holden.
