What is this from? I just recently heard about this lineup from a friend. Kinda cool to see, I think at this point they need to change their name to something else if its just Don who was really a Venture.
@weedsan21 They recently put up a letter on their website explaining this whole thing. From the way they wrote it it sounds like they plan on keeping up the band after all the members die. They mention people in the Ventures family continuing it or something. Once Don Wilson dies/quits/retires or whatever he does...its basically over then.
@Zac360TURN I think even without Don if Gerry were still playing lead the Japanese fans would trun out. There's been a Ventures summer tour of Japan almost every year since the mid-sixties and even without Don or Gerry those thousands of Japanese fans (generations of them by now) will probably want to go to a Ventures concert in the summer. They accepted Leon Taylor and Bob Spalding, both with long ties to the band, so why not other family members? My first choice though would be Shigeo Naka!
@emerpus01 Yeah but are they really The Ventures at that point once Don, Gerry, and Nokie are no longer with us. Maybe they just need a name change then to The Venture Family Experience or something ;)
@Zac360TURN Yeesh I sure hope they don't call it that! There are quite a few legitimate bands that have no remaining original members like the Count Basie Orchestra. Have you heard of the Light Crust Doughboys? Nokie has recorded with them. They were founded in 1931 and are still very active, although no original members remain.
I bought my Wilson Bros. guitar from a Light Crust Doughboy! Yeah I get that there are groups like that, but you lose the original sound when you put in new people, but at the same time if they all get replaced by significantly younger players like Bob's son and leon, they may return to having that faster classic '65 sound they used to have.
@weedsan21 I've been looking for that cd for a few weeks now on their website to hear it, like the Beatles. I've heard that Bob has been in the group since the 80s but you never see him but in the more recent years. I don't have too much of an issue with him. He's a great musician I just don't think its The Ventures after all the members are gone, then they are more of "The Ventures". Still good just not the same.
