  • That was a mighty large hole . Do you think there is there any other way to stop the sap from seeping out after you are finished? I hate to plug the hole forever- It's like leaving an object in it's skin.

  • tree vampires! :'(

  • Very good video. That's what exactly Japanese natives do to protect trees afterward sampling tree sap.

  • Awsome vids, will definatly try this

  • Great video and info. Can't wait till March. Thanks.

  • Great vieo... but I thought Birch trees were white with black striations????

  • soft-plastic canisters, like that bottle, can make you infertile... just sayin :)

  • What is the name of the band and song at the end of this video?

  • can you use this on pancakes like maple syrup after boiling?

  • Bushcraft?? How did you make the plastic tubing? from the leaves????

  • @earthvisitor3 Your welcome :)

  • is this waht you make birch beer from or is it the oil?

  • Vampires do this with humans

  • yee-haaa tree tappin times upon us again...

  • birch sap it so good!!! :D

  • where do i buy tat plastic tube?

  • I cant wait. Have been waiting all year for this

  • is it just possible in march?

  • @AMULDARRY Yes- it has to be only when the sap is rising in the tree

  • @undercurrentspaulo thank you

  • Mannnn, can a black dude hang out with you, I like camping and survivor techniques! Be safe out there bro..

  • Thank you very much for sharing this valuable info. I had no idea that people drank sap from Birch trees, I only knew about Maple trees providing a wonderful syrup. I would imagine it's best to drink it raw, as the living enzymes are destroyed with heat and cooking. I also would suggest Not to collect it in plastic because of the many toxic Chemicals in the plastic that can migrate into you precious, pure, clean sap. Chems in plastic are powerful endocrine disrupters. So stay with glass.

  • I love your field craft videos, you need to be on discovery channel, seriously, id rather watch you over bear and ray

  • Cool, I had no idea you could do that. Tree vampires ftw.

  • if that's a birch tree, what's the tree called with the white bark that burns really well??

  • @drider400 BIRCH

  • @drider400 the peeling bark from a silver birch i think you mean, to use like a firelighter?

  • i have a question once the birch sap is extracted is the anything needed to be done before its drinkable. please reply

  • @jose69hill No it doesn't need any more treating. You can drink it straight from the tree

  • @undercurrentspaulo thanks this looks really cool

  • @undercurrentspaulo I hear that you can boil it down like maple sap and make a syrup. Is this true?

  • @undercurrentspaulo Hey this might be a stupid question, but; is there any difference between Silver Birch and Birch?

  • love ur channel

  • So the best time is right when the buds start forming? Does it matter what type of wood you use to seal the hole? And does the depth and diameter of the hole vary depending on the size of the tree? Thanks very much, I really want to try this next year.

  • mind if i ask does it taste sweet like sugar water or wat

  • excellent, i look foward to spring time

  • why hazel? Can't you use the birch bark?

  • thank you i liked that

  • what season or month is that?

  • Vermont Maple syrup kicks birches ass!

  • @shortifireburnin

why? birch syrup is gorgeous and rarer

  • @shortifireburnin Canadian Maple Syrup is even Better

  • HAHAHAHAHA! Power drill! The traditionalists will hate me...

  • does is matter if it's a silver birch?

  • Did this all the time as a kid, although we'd just break a branch off and hang a bottle at the end of it, and the tree would heal itself up nicely as long as you didn't break too many branches off..

  • Do they make birch beer (similar to root beer) from birch sap?

  • hahahahaha

  • @kurt123

    no.

  • there are so mant different types of birches, which ones are "drinkabale"

  • i tryed this and it did work

mind you i did it with a knife cuz ray mears did it with a knife

    but it didnt come out

  • Nice video.

I've been wondering which trees are good for drinking sap, and how exactly you would extract this sap.

I think a tin knife would work perfectly fine if you have time.

    -Squirrelie

  • Birch sap is awesome but Maple sap is better.

But I still like birch sap, it tastest great and its good for your health. This seassion is good, I already got like 15 L of that sap.

Btw, I have one question...How to preserve this Sap? As I know it gets soury.

  • what does it taste like?

  • my aunts sap tree it sweats sap and its bitter

  • probably because hazel is great for coppicing, so you dont have to search long and hard for the right size, plus it will grow back soon. yew would be the best for fungi free plugs, but its said to be a sin to cut a yew ( taxus baccata) so you decide

  • why do you use hazel specificaly? could you use any tree?

  • That is one of the reasons that I love springtime, there's is som much in the woods that you can collect! 5/5

  • OMG, I just love all of your a to z bushcraft videos. They are the best. Thanks!!!

  • You finally found one for the letter V, cool.

I was going to suggest vitamins, natural vitamins found in the bush.

  • no its birch sap

  • very important tip, especially for people who get lost in the wilderness in march:)

  • (with a power drill and empty bottle, no less)

  • erm? use knife, then put some cloth and let it soak?

you dont need to take off 10 litres of sap to survive in woods

  • WOW that was cool.
