@MrSmexiiPanda621 I think most people are just comparing it to the other final fantasy games, such as VI and VII. Those games set the bar a little too high for future FF games.
I like FF12, but its too painful to play through it thinking what the game shouldve been had the SE not interferred with the original vision for the game. Vaan and Penelo were never meant to be in it, Basch was meant to be the main character, and the story just wasnt what it shouldve been. i feel so disapointed that the realistic voice acting, the great world and everything else was wasted on what shouldve been the best RPG of all time. but thats life i guess. hopefully FF15 will be better!
@A203D Well in my opinion that doesn't ruin it. Of course the game would have been better without at least Vaan (Penelo doesn't annoy me, I actually liked her because I ended up using her as my major healer) but they're easy enough to ignore. It's not such a wide stretch of the imagination to picture the game without them because they don't enrich the game whatsoever. In my opinion they should have been optional characters like Yuffie and Vincent in VII.
someone tell me what is this game like how difficult is it? is the combat easy to get used to and how long does it take to complete and is really that good? ive played final fantasy 7 8 9 and FFX and FF X-2 but never played final fantasy 12 cause i heard it sucks balls. someone reply please.
@TwoFaceRises It was a pretty good game in my opinion and the battle system is pretty forgiving since you can cancel an action right after you've put it in simply by putting in another one. Also after you've opened the battle menu by pressing the X button, the game stops so you don't have to worry about deciding quickly what you want to do. Also gambits are a big help. If your gambits are good enough, you'll be prepared for any situation. The game can be beaten in probably about 30-40 hours...
@TwoFaceRises without sidequests but with them (ALL of them, including getting all your characters to level 99 in order to beat the Omega Mark 12 and level 99 red chocobo) can take you over 12 hours but you'll enjoy every minute of it! I have played all together for about 230 hours or so and I haven't even fought Omega or the Level 99 Red Chocobo. All together, I'd recommend it to a fellow Final Fantasy fan, with all the options this game has, it'd definitely be worth the money!

This game was really great. I'd much rather have an HD remake of this than of FFX.
It's funny because FF fans constantly complain that recent FF games haven't had enough side quests and free roaming, but they all seem to hate FFXII and it wasn't nearly as successful as other FF games. So what are you telling Square?
This game seems pretty good. I have played Final Fantasy XIII, so is this good? If so, does it have these factors: side quests, a large world to explore, and a great story. If it has these factors, AWESOME. If not, then I'll still try it out. :)
@fusilism I bought FFXII, and I must admit it's really different (in a good way), and it's really great. Also feel free to tell me but I might get Final Fantasy 4 and 6 on the Virtual Console, and if I get a PS3 for my birthday, I might get 5,7,8, and 9. I'm also interested in recieving 10 and 11 (even though that's an MMO, and I'm not familiar with them. So would these be worth getting. If you can reply, thank you for your help. :)
@HombreHonest Ive played all the games you mentioned except 11. Idk where to start haha. Every Final Fantasy is unique in their own way. For example, I liked ff8 with it's futuristic student/military feel, FF12's vast world and X's story and characters. Oh the summons too from X are a fave. I suggest you start with the 3D ones like I did, and then you can eventually appreciate the 2D ones and see how stuff like spells and summons built up and evolved from the earlier Final Fantasy games :D

And sorry if I 'm bothering you again, but I'm also interested in some of Square's other RPG's such as Chrono Cross (I've played Chrono Trigger, it is AWESOME) Xenogears, Vagrant Story, the Parasite Eve series, and Final Fantasy 4 The After Years. @HombreHonest Cross is really artistic(personally liked the music)! Everything you mentioned are really really great games. Except for FF4 The After Years. Haven't played it but I think it's better to leave FF4 after you finish it. Those games are when Squaresoft still make artsy games which is really good like (Vagrant Story having the best story line ever in all Square games imho). There you have it. As long as it's Squaresoft, you will surely enjoy games like Legend of Mana or Front Mission3!
I'm really glad to see a good review for this game and so many good comments. With such a small following versus some of the other FF titles, I was beginning to think I was alone in my tastes as far as RPGs go. Even with FFXIII's beautiful graphics and characters, these alone cannot replace story, which makes FFXII the series' best title, in my opinion.
I never understood why people moaned about gambits. Just turn them off! This game was and is amazing. The story is all subjective and perhaps not as deep as others but the actual gameplay and gameworld are immense.
This is one of my favourite rpg's of all time and I've played quite a few! I just loved it so much. I still can't do the final hunt though which is so frustrating!!!
they need to use this kind of battle style and the licence board again i have played through this game at least 11 times and it never got boring unlike ff 13 which had a boring and stupid story and the battle style got boring and frustrating after about a good hour and you did not get to pick your party members till chapter 9 which really pissed me off. I guess what i am trying to say is ff 12 did everything right and ff 13 did everything wrong.

I kind of now why everybody bashes on this game, they say it's to much of a departure from the previous games. It has a lot more in common with Vagrant Story, which was a Final Fantasy spin-off. The world, character design and combat system are all improved versions of Vagrant Story.
my favorite rpgs are FF12 and the Paper Mario series. Why? 1 The story, and 2, Cause you can avoid battles! Anybody remember how tedious FF IV cave level was at the beginning. When ever i got lost at that part, it would take me forever to get back because of all the stupid battles i had to do

The only major problems with FF12 is Vaan and Penelo. They don't belong in the story at all. You could take them out the the story would not change at all. The story is mainly about Ashe reclaiming her kingdom and getting revenge for the deaths of her father and husband. Or at least it should have been. Also the quickenings were somewhat unexpained bullshit. How the hell does vaan shoot fireballs out of his arms?! Limit breaks wouldve been better depending on the weapon you used.
Really you should not foucs so much on the story. Most of FF games had a retarded cliched plot that either invloves fighting against a big-evil/god or a person trying to become god. Gameplay is far more important than Story.
It's not so much the plot being cliched but rather the plot not making sense and lazy story telling. I liked FF especially ff6. It was very well told in an operatic fashion. Characters had a role and world freaking ended half way through. It had balls to end the world half way through and create a sense of helplessness. Gameplay greater than story? Bullcrap. Guess you never played planescape torment, system shock, deus ex, SMT, Persona series, bioware, old school adventure games.
For example you could say Reservoir Dogs is just another cliched robbery/heist movie with a bunch of crooks. But its still a good movie because of how it is told and how the characters each have their own quirks. Quentin tarantino is not an original filmmaker but he is an awesome story teller. Gameplay has to coincide with story, especially in rpgs or else it is no longer a "ROLE" playing game. A shitty book is no longer literature and badly wriiten rpg can not be art.
One of the best Final Fantasy game. It has some flaws on storyline and... Vaan... Forcefully-inserted character that doesn't match with the story or the mood of Ivalice...
But FF XII has a great and fun gameplay, a stunning open world, marvelous visuals and a very good soundtrack. Ivalice is so damn beatiful!
This is a terrible FF and a very boring game. I do not recommend it whatsoever. The last proper FF was FFX. This game is completely forgettable and the battle system WILL lull you to sleep over time. Avoid this game; the opening was the only good part about the entire game.
Bought this game a few days ago without watching or reading any reviews, I had no expectations and oh my god, it's so fckn good. Brilliant combat (love gambit!), excellent storytelling/voice acting, beautiful graphics considering its for the PS2. I've only played/owned it for 3 days and it's my favorite game of ALL TIME.
I'm not really into JRPGs but this is something special, it's in my opinion the pinnacle of video game imagination. A true final fantasy!

Want more?
@genesisSOC well, to be honest, im still not convinced, i put over 100 hours into that game and it wasnt boring for me, i will agree that the lisence board was a pain, and so was grinding, and the story was mediocre compared to the others, but i still found that game fun to play, gives u shit loads to do, and the battle system in nearly all FFs can become boring, all your doing is selecting attacks on a menu, same with 12, it isnt THAT much different from what u do in every other game
@MrDeathnotefan98 It was a lot different because in FF1, the battles flowed smoothly and were challenging and compelling. FF2 sucked. FF3 was a lot like FF1 with more job variety and strategies. FF4 was simply amazing, lots of action and quick thinking among a party of 5 with a great story. FF5 was meh. FF6 was a masterpiece, fast battles with a perfect story. FF7 was a masterpiece, fast battles with a perfect story. FF8 was meh. FF9 was a masterpiece. FFX was great. Convinced yet?

@MrDeathnotefan98 12 doesn't live up to the FF standard and name, though. It's forgettable. I barely remember all the characters' names, much less anything about the story. I found my self yawning throughout the entire game and just begging for save points so I could stop playing and do something interesting. I didn't feel attached to the characters at all, I didn't find my self excited about leveling up or learning new abilities, I didn't feel compelled in the story. It was all a joke.

I would've been content if they just kept 12 as a Tactics spin off, because then it would've had a lot less expectation. My opinion means more than anyone else's as I grew up with FF and am a die hard fan, I am the one Square should be targeting with the franchise.

@MrDeathnotefan98 I started on FF1 NES when I was 4 years old and moved up from there. 7 is not the best hands down, the line between FF7 and FF6 in terms of "best" is so thin. They're both absolutely amazing and masterpieces, but they're definitely the two best in the series. FF9 is great, the third best IMO. I want more FF9s in my FFs.
@MrDeathnotefan98 I agree completely, I'd love to see another FF9 medieval fantasy style. That's one of the main reasons why I loved FF9 so much, it went back to the good roots of a good proper FF. I loved 6 and 7 so much, and then having 9 again to remind us how great FF was when it started was really awesome.

I never tried FF games before so I want to ask... Can I pre-program every other character and control only one (I saw people switch between them). Will it make me any problems?
@ShadowzGamer Yes you can do that, but only in FF XII. In other FF games, the battle system is turn-based. You assign an order to each character (attack, item, magic, etc,) when their turn comes. In FF XII, however, you only give orders to one player at a time, but you can alter how a character acts using the gambit system unique to this game. It's hard to explain so you should get the game to see for yourself. It's a really cool system.
I started to loose interest with FF10, when it took a more "pop idol" kind of tone. This one seems...okay(Vagrant Story theme?), but I really couldn't get into it after three days of play.
FF13...nice graphics and production values, but its back to FF10 territory with even a Leona Lewis song.
To be fair, though, I should give FF12 another go.

i love the idea of this game tho, i mean i love the open ness of the world, and all the little sidequests and towns and stuff, but i reli just wish it went back to the old active time battle sytem, of ff4-9
switch the battle system for the one thats in crisis core and id actually be able to play this game all the way through it wasnt much but considering it was a stepping stone to make better rpgs later it was and amazing story that was easy to dive into though all the side quest made it anoying nd great at the same time since X's main downfall was the linear storyline that made it epic, but maybe its just me the idea of the combat system was great but im being lienient saying it gets a b- gplay
I don't like this game, much. The graphics are great and the storyline is interesting but other than that... not too impressed. The battle system is what kills it for me. And the insane prices on items from the item shops. Not a terrible game! But not a good one. My favorite is IX.
It`s nice to hear a positive review. I personally disliked the game: except for the stunning visuals, It has no real involving story, the supposed protagonist has no meaning in the plot, the music are above the average for a FF title and the bad dude is dull. I can rate 6 out of 10 because I`m a fanboy of the series (yes, I even played the FF on the gameboy back in time).
the thing is traditional rpgs are dying, they are replaced by more fast paced western rpgs (namely; ME 1 & 2, fallout 3, oblivion, dragon age etc). so i dont think there is a future for final fantasy series, especially after FF XIII

I hated spending hours messing with the Gambit system.....winning or losing a battle usually depended on how well you set it up beforehand. I couldn't finish FF12...it was painful to keep playing after a while. I'll stick to the PSX releases.
You know what I hate about reviewers? They (stupidly)try to be critic in every aspect, but in the end they just underrate or overrate a game. Ive seen LOTS AND LOTS of reviews, and in many cases the games got underrated or overrated. And when I check out what REAL gamers say, the game is half as bad or good as they say. They are so "objective" that they end up being subjective while reviewing. Heck, when I go to a reviewers website I end up checking the gamers reviews, more appealing must I say.
this is the best final fantasy i have ever played. the battle system is real time. Non of that its my turn now , then its your turn, now its my turn now turnbased battles that stinks now a days.

@A203D Well in my opinion that doesn't ruin it. Of course the game would have been better without at least Vaan (Penelo doesn't annoy me, I actually liked her because I ended up using her as my major healer) but they're easy enough to ignore. It's not such a wide stretch of the imagination to picture the game without them because they don't enrich the game whatsoever. In my opinion they should have been optional characters like Yuffie and Vincent in VII.

@TwoFaceRises It was a pretty good game in my opinion and the battle system is pretty forgiving since you can cancel an action right after you've put it in simply by putting in another one. Also after you've opened the battle menu by pressing the X button, the game stops so you don't have to worry about deciding quickly what you want to do. Also gambits are a big help. If your gambits are good enough, you'll be prepared for any situation. The game can be beaten in probably about 30-40 hours...

@TwoFaceRises without sidequests but with them (ALL of them, including getting all your characters to level 99 in order to beat the Omega Mark 12 and level 99 red chocobo) can take you over 12 hours but you'll enjoy every minute of it! I have played all together for about 230 hours or so and I haven't even fought Omega or the Level 99 Red Chocobo. All together, I'd recommend it to a fellow Final Fantasy fan, with all the options this game has, it'd definitely be worth the money!

This game was really great. I'd much rather have an HD remake of this than of FFX.
It's funny because FF fans constantly complain that recent FF games haven't had enough side quests and free roaming, but they all seem to hate FFXII and it wasn't nearly as successful as other FF games. So what are you telling Square?

@fusilism I bought FFXII, and I must admit it's really different (in a good way), and it's really great. Also feel free to tell me but I might get Final Fantasy 4 and 6 on the Virtual Console, and if I get a PS3 for my birthday, I might get 5,7,8, and 9. I'm also interested in recieving 10 and 11 (even though that's an MMO, and I'm not familiar with them. So would these be worth getting. If you can reply, thank you for your help. :)

@HombreHonest Ive played all the games you mentioned except 11. Idk where to start haha. Every Final Fantasy is unique in their own way. For example, I liked ff8 with it's futuristic student/military feel, FF12's vast world and X's story and characters. Oh the summons too from X are a fave. I suggest you start with the 3D ones like I did, and then you can eventually appreciate the 2D ones and see how stuff like spells and summons built up and evolved from the earlier Final Fantasy games :D

@HombreHonest Cross is really artistic(personally liked the music)! Everything you mentioned are really really great games. Except for FF4 The After Years. Haven't played it but I think it's better to leave FF4 after you finish it. Those games are when Squaresoft still make artsy games which is really good like (Vagrant Story having the best story line ever in all Square games imho). There you have it. As long as it's Squaresoft, you will surely enjoy games like Legend of Mana or Front Mission3!

I'm really glad to see a good review for this game and so many good comments. With such a small following versus some of the other FF titles, I was beginning to think I was alone in my tastes as far as RPGs go. Even with FFXIII's beautiful graphics and characters, these alone cannot replace story, which makes FFXII the series' best title, in my opinion.

they need to use this kind of battle style and the licence board again i have played through this game at least 11 times and it never got boring unlike ff 13 which had a boring and stupid story and the battle style got boring and frustrating after about a good hour and you did not get to pick your party members till chapter 9 which really pissed me off. I guess what i am trying to say is ff 12 did everything right and ff 13 did everything wrong.

I kind of now why everybody bashes on this game, they say it's to much of a departure from the previous games. It has a lot more in common with Vagrant Story, which was a Final Fantasy spin-off. The world, character design and combat system are all improved versions of Vagrant Story.

The only major problems with FF12 is Vaan and Penelo. They don't belong in the story at all. You could take them out the the story would not change at all. The story is mainly about Ashe reclaiming her kingdom and getting revenge for the deaths of her father and husband. Or at least it should have been. Also the quickenings were somewhat unexpained bullshit. How the hell does vaan shoot fireballs out of his arms?! Limit breaks wouldve been better depending on the weapon you used.

It's not so much the plot being cliched but rather the plot not making sense and lazy story telling. I liked FF especially ff6. It was very well told in an operatic fashion. Characters had a role and world freaking ended half way through. It had balls to end the world half way through and create a sense of helplessness. Gameplay greater than story? Bullcrap. Guess you never played planescape torment, system shock, deus ex, SMT, Persona series, bioware, old school adventure games.

For example you could say Reservoir Dogs is just another cliched robbery/heist movie with a bunch of crooks. But its still a good movie because of how it is told and how the characters each have their own quirks. Quentin tarantino is not an original filmmaker but he is an awesome story teller. Gameplay has to coincide with story, especially in rpgs or else it is no longer a "ROLE" playing game. A shitty book is no longer literature and badly wriiten rpg can not be art.

But FF XII has a great and fun gameplay, a stunning open world, marvelous visuals and a very good soundtrack. Ivalice is so damn beatiful!

Bought this game a few days ago without watching or reading any reviews, I had no expectations and oh my god, it's so fckn good. Brilliant combat (love gambit!), excellent storytelling/voice acting, beautiful graphics considering its for the PS2. I've only played/owned it for 3 days and it's my favorite game of ALL TIME.
I'm not really into JRPGs but this is something special, it's in my opinion the pinnacle of video game imagination. A true final fantasy!

@genesisSOC well, to be honest, im still not convinced, i put over 100 hours into that game and it wasnt boring for me, i will agree that the lisence board was a pain, and so was grinding, and the story was mediocre compared to the others, but i still found that game fun to play, gives u shit loads to do, and the battle system in nearly all FFs can become boring, all your doing is selecting attacks on a menu, same with 12, it isnt THAT much different from what u do in every other game

@MrDeathnotefan98 It was a lot different because in FF1, the battles flowed smoothly and were challenging and compelling. FF2 sucked. FF3 was a lot like FF1 with more job variety and strategies. FF4 was simply amazing, lots of action and quick thinking among a party of 5 with a great story. FF5 was meh. FF6 was a masterpiece, fast battles with a perfect story. FF7 was a masterpiece, fast battles with a perfect story. FF8 was meh. FF9 was a masterpiece. FFX was great. Convinced yet?

@MrDeathnotefan98 12 doesn't live up to the FF standard and name, though. It's forgettable. I barely remember all the characters' names, much less anything about the story. I found my self yawning throughout the entire game and just begging for save points so I could stop playing and do something interesting. I didn't feel attached to the characters at all, I didn't find my self excited about leveling up or learning new abilities, I didn't feel compelled in the story. It was all a joke.

I would've been content if they just kept 12 as a Tactics spin off, because then it would've had a lot less expectation. My opinion means more than anyone else's as I grew up with FF and am a die hard fan, I am the one Square should be targeting with the franchise.

They're both absolutely amazing and masterpieces, but they're definitely the two best in the series. FF9 is great, the third best IMO. I want more FF9s in my FFs.

@ShadowzGamer Yes you can do that, but only in FF XII. In other FF games, the battle system is turn-based. You assign an order to each character (attack, item, magic, etc,) when their turn comes. In FF XII, however, you only give orders to one player at a time, but you can alter how a character acts using the gambit system unique to this game. It's hard to explain so you should get the game to see for yourself. It's a really cool system.

I started to loose interest with FF10, when it took a more "pop idol" kind of tone. This one seems...okay(Vagrant Story theme?), but I really couldn't get into it after three days of play.
FF13...nice graphics and production values, but its back to FF10 territory with even a Leona Lewis song.

Why the fuk did Hope have to wait till half the game to confront Snow about his mother's death? Made no sense whatsoever. And why didn't the game explain the story? Hope was scared to confront Snow; he was unsure of what to say, unsure of what he wants to do, unsure on what to do to get over the death of his mother. The game DID explain a majority of the story, although some was left in datalogs. And the story isn't even finished yet, so this isn't a flaw. Bizzare characters and lame story? To me both of those were amazing and 1000x better than XII's story and characters. Bye now.

switch the battle system for the one thats in crisis core and id actually be able to play this game all the way through it wasnt much but considering it was a stepping stone to make better rpgs later it was and amazing story that was easy to dive into though all the side quest made it anoying nd great at the same time since X's main downfall was the linear storyline that made it epic, but maybe its just me the idea of the combat system was great but im being lienient saying it gets a b- gplay

I don't like this game, much. The graphics are great and the storyline is interesting but other than that... not too impressed. The battle system is what kills it for me. And the insane prices on items from the item shops. Not a terrible game! But not a good one. My favorite is IX.

It`s nice to hear a positive review. I personally disliked the game: except for the stunning visuals, It has no real involving story, the supposed protagonist has no meaning in the plot, the music are above the average for a FF title and the bad dude is dull. I can rate 6 out of 10 because I`m a fanboy of the series (yes, I even played the FF on the gameboy back in time).

the thing is traditional rpgs are dying, they are replaced by more fast paced western rpgs (namely; ME 1 & 2, fallout 3, oblivion, dragon age etc). so i dont think there is a future for final fantasy series, especially after FF XIII

I hated spending hours messing with the Gambit system.....winning or losing a battle usually depended on how well you set it up beforehand. I couldn't finish FF12...it was painful to keep playing after a while. I'll stick to the PSX releases.

You know what I hate about reviewers? They (stupidly)try to be critic in every aspect, but in the end they just underrate or overrate a game. Ive seen LOTS AND LOTS of reviews, and in many cases the games got underrated or overrated. And when I check out what REAL gamers say, the game is half as bad or good as they say. They are so "objective" that they end up being subjective while reviewing. Heck, when I go to a reviewers website I end up checking the gamers reviews, more appealing must I say.

it's funny because even though final fantasy games always tell stories of different characters and different worlds, they always end up with the same premise about a young kid with spiky hair who travels his way to defead a common evil.
The only one that doesn't have this kind of thing is probably the first one and that's it.
But I guess the games are all awesome except for XIII
