This video along with your video on removing a motherboard are the only ones I've watched on the topic and will probably be the only ones I need. Thanks for the videos especially for the simple, detailed instructions.
at 9;12 my mother board doesn't have the same symbols on those connecters as the motherboard. The motherboard doesn't have any symbols at all just says f panel I I have a P4MA PRO Mainboard
Our desktop computer recently died of mysterious causes, so once we got a new computer I decided to open it up and take a look at it. When I powered it up I noticed a spark and saw the motherboard short circuit right after start up. I'm thinking about swapping out the motherboard for a new one and using it as my own computer. This will be the first time I'll be opening a computer and fiddling with it's guts. I know a bit of computer hardware basics, but do you have any helpful tips for a newbie?
@ravenfan205 first you have to see what the cpu type is to replace the Motherboard and follow this video how to put the new Motherboard in its easy when you do it a few times good luck
on the optical drive you add an audio cable to the motherboard as well as the ide ribbon, what is the advantage of this as I just connect the ribbon and have never had a problem
Every piece of hardware in the computer from the mother board to the graphics card to the sound card to the hard drive has power requirements. All you need is a good power supply. If you are an avid gamer and have a premium motherboard and graphics card then you need at least a true 500w to 800w power supply. Be carefull when choosing a power supply because some are not as powerfull as they claim to be... Stick with the name brands. You get what you pay for.
Im thinking of getting a new motherboard AND a new graphicscard, im gaming alot so i want a fast Graphicscard and a motherboard that can handle lots of RAM, now, the problem for me is that on the graphicscards specifications theres a "minimum watt" requirement, so, my question really is; Is it the motherboard that handless the watt so that the card runs as it should or how does that work?
Very good explanation, the first part of the ground and the bronze stands it's the better, I only see so clear in this video from many others in the tube.
@wakpy you don't need to but you may get a message up when you boot up windows with the new motherboard saying that a bit of hardware has changed and you need to phone up microsoft.
I have tried to install a ASRock P4VM890 Socket 478Intel Motherboard w/ PCI-E 16 into an (2003 purchased) hp pavilion a335w computer. The installion went fine and i got everything plugged in and attached, but when i tried to turn it on, it say not recognized and wants me to restore the computer to the last known settings and when i tried to do that it just goes back to he same thing, and i just put the original motherboard back in. What should i do? or is there any advice/tips you could give me
You did a really superb job in explaining what you were going to do then doing it. The break in sound output was unnerving at first, but really appropriate to eliminate unnecessary background noise. I particularly liked the way you showed of handling the static discharge wrist strap and how to use the mat.
The mat, no. A properly working wrist strap with the alligator end connected to a metal part of your case, will do the trick just fine. They're about $5.
Great Video, but I've a little question, There must be a space between the motherboard and the case something like a plastic to put in some holes or it depends of what kind of hardware? Thanks for the Video! God Bless you!
You put in risers on the screw holes at in the motherboard tray. Risers are just like sort of extension screw holes. Next you line the mobo with the your I/O panel making the mobo screw holes right over the risers. Screw them in.Now that that's done the reason for it is to prevent electrostatic dishcarge from mobo. The motherboard doesn't actuallly touch the bottom of the case so that if some static discharge went on your case it would be safe.
Great Video....BTW if you lay the case horizontally then you dont have the trouble of holding the motherboard and screwing it in place. I am sure you did it vertically for the clarity of the video
this video helped me tremendously. THANK YOU!!! You are a great teacher, very thorough, and you can actually make a video - how refreshing ...and we didnt have to listen to someone's crappy music like other videos. BRAVO 5 Stars for sure!
Just a note, you should probably use a wrench to tighten those brass standoffs. Sometimes while removing the screws on the motherboard, the brass standoff will rotate and the screw doesn't come out. It's a pain in the ass when it happens.
ok got a new build (new everything, case, motherboard) anyways i plug everything in, and the mother board lights red and green but theres no power, i push the power button but nothing happens. PLEASE help i can give more info.
did u intall the jumper correctly? set the jumper to restore mode then to management. if this does not work remove the cmos battery for roughly 15 minutes. the place back in. and when you remove the cmos battery also unplug the computer

thanks alot for this video. I was expecting to read a guide but found this video to show me exactly how to do it. i bought a new case and didn't know how to change it. thanks alot for this!!!
So what was the IO cable from or for the CD/DVD player? Also my tower has four other case plugs that say [VCC USB1- USB1+ GIND]-[GIND] and [VCC USB2- USB2+ GIND]-[GIND] where do I put those I looked through my motherboards manual but it doesnt say anything about toughs plugs. However all the other ones that you showed are there.
These videos are designed to teach new CompTIA A+ students proper grounding techniques. This is what is tested on the CompTIA A+ exam, and it is also a recommended best practice.
I'm working on building a Pc,I Ordered most of the stuff I need,Case,Cd/dvd drive,Mother Board and a Hard drive. The Mother board and hard drive should be here by monday. I Hope I Dont mess anything up,looks easy enough but you never know.
that pc loud, sounds like a small plane, tbh motherboard is the hardest thing to deal with when building, i've build a few know it it gets easier everytime, the front panel is usually not so easy to deal with, and is rather fidly when putting the case connecters in, but if you feel lazy just putting the power switch in will be fine to switch the pc on if you wanna test it, pc parts are alot more resiliant then people may think aswell :D
The only thing im doubting about building my pc is installing the motherboard...
Im worried i will screw it all up, i have heard that its not likely as long as you ground yourself. Can i just stay on a wooden surface and touch something metal first? Thanks this tutorial is sooo perfect.
Nice guide, but ROFL at anti static mat. They sure know how to sell them.. scare tactics. I've build systems since the 1st micro proc was made, and you don't need all of that fancy crap. In fact you could do nothing and probably never have a problem. The exception is if you get shocks off of things in your room often. Then you need to do something. But all I do is ground/discharge to anything other than the computer 1st. I've never blown a system for lack of that huge static mat, EVER.
Using proper ESD protection is good practice. These videos are to show new CompTIA A+ candidates good habits and proper techniques.
Watch my video on ESD protection and you will see that an ESD mat and strap are recommended but not required. They are there to show new technicians some options in various situations.
I always bring my mat w/ me on a service call because I never know what type of environment I will be working in. The mat acts as a cushion to protect the work surface too.
Most likely yes. The drivers used for the new motherboard would be different. A few of the key components are the mass storage controllers and the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) drivers. Most likely these would be different and you would want to backup your data and reinstall Windows.
