Unplug it (duh, but some people forget these things), unscrew the case and all the crap you see above the tape itself, and then gently pull it out. Works for if the VHS is intact... not sure if it'll work it it's broken!

C4 usually works quite well for this kind of thing. If that isn't available, then you can make C3 by mixing Vaseline with peanut butter and lighter fluid, and ignite it with a non-mentholated safety match.

If that fails, then hit the tape repeatedly with a microphone.

Greg! Look for a small tab of metal on one side or the other of the slide mechanism. Wish I could be more specific but the tab will be locked into a small notch and will have a spring attached. Find a very thin, long shank screwdriver once you locate the tab. Slide the tab out of the notch and you should be able to pull the cassette out. Good luck.

While someone has probably already posted this here goes anyway. To get your tape back you are going to have to pull the carriage (where the tape is located now) out buy taking all the screws out that hold the carriage in. The VCR is toast so you can't hurt it. Eventually it will relenquish the tape when you get far enough into the process of removing the carriage. Good luck!

to get the vcr out, you have to go in throug the back, pull out (with pliers) the AV inputs and cut the remaining metal inbetween. then you take a green string and tie it around your dogs tail and nail a piece of pizza to the wall. then you take the stubborn bastard vcr player and throw it and hope it breaks in a way so that you can get it out. Hey Greg I loved this video. The way to get the tape out is to take advantage of the lever system inside the VCR there is a motor that runs the eject part of the system Find that motor and spin it manually that will eject the tape. If that does not work you will need to dismount the motor and run the levers by hand.
