So much hope. So much optimism. Such openness to the new. The cold vibrant air on that day pinching us out of the recession. I wish things would have gone better for us after this day, but am relieved that things didn't manifest as destructively as they could have.
listening to this music while watching both my two idols performing for the president it was like a feeling that i was there listening to that wonderfull music that made my heart a sense of bliss and a stress free day .. two thumbs up for my two classical performer idols .. i admire you both .. god bless lets fill the world with music not war.
@keruixin Yeah. They did that because if they played their 200+ year-old instruments in the cold like that, it could potentially ruin them. They were, however, the ones who played the recorded version. I'm willing to give these guys a bit more slack than, say, Ke$ha.
@keruixin umm is that even possible? especially on string instruments? i doubt it. besides they are very talented musicians they dont need to fake anything.
@MyungSC Maybe you aren't a string player yourself, but trust me, if you were you would never play in that kind of cold weather with some of the most expensive instruments in existence.
@bachthoven1685 But the expensive shit is made to last dude. It's just when it's like 80 Degrees out THATS WHEN you dont want to have a string instrument out. It warms the glue and the glue ends up just turning into stuff between the wood and not keeping the wood together. YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY NOT A STRING PLAYER SO STFU...
@Beaner1226 I AM a string player. 7th grade physics would teach you that substances contract in cold temperatures, meaning the wood and strings will literally change shape. You couldn't keep an instrument in tune for more than five minutes in that weather.
@bachthoven1685 Then explain how my 12th Grade orchestra and I played Back Prelude for 30 minutes over and over at a outdoor charity event. EXPLAIN EINSTEIN.
@Beaner1226 I'm not saying outdoors in general is bad for instruments, I'm saying extreme temperatures on both ends of the spectrum will severely alter the pitch. The temperature that day (with wind chill) was 17 degrees fahrenheit. Unless the instrument has been stored at that temperature for a long period of time, it will be out of tune. If Youtube allowed links I could send you straight to fifty websites that say you are wrong. Particle theory of matter, learn it.
@Beaner1226 your insistence that string instruments are unaffected by very cold weather is just pitiful. you say you played for 30 minutes straight outside? assuming it was very cold, you and your orchestra were out of tune in a matter of minutes and you were too much of an amateur to recognize it.
@lintonNZ That's because the piece is called "Air and Simple GIfts" which was composed by John Williams. The tune "Simple Gifts" was originally taken from the Shaker Melody, and adapted to Appalachian Spring by Copland, then later was adapted into River Dance.
Music is a universal language that allows dialog and connection with the universal humanity of us all. If music can bring all races together in peace and harmony then that is wonderful don't you think?
I think it is good to notice this unique power that music has.
And to acknowledge the melting pot of cultures in America that
@Boldstrummer Music is not a universal language. Most cultures have their own types of music. Many of which are not understood or enjoyed by other cultures.
Mathematics is the universal language. You should see the film Contact some time.
@jrpatton That's not true at all. The two disciplines actually have many similarities and while I agree that mathematics is universal, music is as well. The fact that "most cultures have their own types of music" is proof of that.
The saying"singing in the rain" not literraly in the rain, they pre recorded a few days before. The instrument seen are pure junk, no one in their right minds would bring out a string instrument into that environment.
Did you all know that the Perlman and Yo-yo Ma actually recorded this a few days earlier and when they played it on this day, you heard their recording instead of the live music? I'm a violinist and I know that cold temperatures crack the wood of (orchestral) string instruments very easily and also make them go out of tune frequently.
my favorite part about this is that its a recording of them. if it was live, then they would have been out of tune because of the cold. but they fooled so many people, so props.
@ Highest Rated Comment - yes our little rainbow nation is wonderful, but where's the white, middle-class, Christian guy? Oh that's right, including him ruins the multiculturalism of it all; not inclusive enough. I don't usually bother commenting on Youtube, because the level of discourse can really sink to abysmal levels such as this. @chltmdwp yes, that was my first thought, too (Perlman with white hair). I saw him on the Ed Sullivan Show with dad back then and knew. "It's a Gift..." was rendered beautifully.
When i was in 7th grade this country was described to me as a "melting pot" and later a mozaic. In a melting, however, all individual identity is lost, and in a mozaic there is only the appearace of unity. Perhaps a better image that either of these would be tapestry where each thread is in someway unique, but together the individual threads combine in a manner that is infinitely more wonderful than any of them could have achieved on their own.

I could see the performance of this piece from my country Venezuela, and I must say it is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard.Congratulations to John Williams and those incredible musicians
i remember watching this while at school. All my other classmates were talking and messing around, while i was watching intently. I couldn't believe their indifference.
If you look at the crowd, they look so uninterested...it is very sad that today's American's cannot respect great music written by the world's most famous modern composer and played by the world's most amazing classical performers...
@phantomfn8 I watched this a second time just because of your comments. I do not see what your talking about. I see a crowd watching, smiling, taking pictures, eyes captivated on the performance. I am an American and I thouroughly enjoyed the performance. The only ones I see not doing that are the photographers in front of the performers doing their job and the security around them, also doing their job. Your comment to me is more a cheap shot at Americans, than any sort of true observation.
@unclemeat8 first off...calm down...i do admit...what i said was stupid...yes...but you cannot deny that culture has greatly dropped in this country! most of the music today consists of merely percussion and speaking...no musical talent at all! This is the kind of thing we need to bring culture back into our society!
@phantomfn8 your right also. I deleted my post. BUT, MOST music "way back when" was also garbage! There were great songs being made then, and now, but it gets mired in the daily droning dookie that you can hear on the radio.
@demongeniehunter It was pre-recorded. The instruments wouldn't have played at their best in the cold winter weather, so it was pre-recorded. They are actually playing here, but they only ones that could hear the actual playing are those that were close up.
Why is it that when someone doesn't get your stupid, unnecessary, badly done sarcasm, they're automatically a hillbilly? What does being a hillbilly have to do with anything?
One of the themes being played here is "The Lord of the Dance" - an Irish tune! "Dance Dance wherever ye may be I am the Lord of the Dance said He...."
Just to let u guys know....Music is something which will follow us till we breathe in our last breath. Science...Maths....Geography...etc..is something that after we have reached a certain age, all these will start to fade from our mind and we'll soon forget everything............
i was wondering when i first saw this live. anthony mcgill's barrel is alot darker so now that i know that it was a plastic/rubber copy it makes sense that it looked alot lighter
I remember that they made us watch this in history, and my best friend & I weren't paying attention to anything until this came on: we got extremely quiet & just listened... We nearly cried at the beauty of this performance! :)
That "fuck you" was meant for another comment in another video and it was a joke. I was doing multiple responses at once and I initially did the wrong responses for the wrong videos. The second comment was originally meant for you. I didn't know how to remove the first one and I'm sorry If i didn't grasp your sarcasm, it just dosen't seem sarcastic. And I'm no hill-billy.
i saw this live in chicago. TWICE<3 'cept is was emanuel ax on piano......

If you look at the crowd, they look so uninterested...it is very sad that today's American's cannot respect great music written by the world's most famous modern composer and played by the world's most amazing classical performers...
phantomfn8 1 year ago 4

This is the kind of thing we need to bring culture back into our society!
phantomfn8 1 year ago
@phantomfn8 your right also. I deleted my post. BUT, MOST music "way back when" was also garbage! There were great songs being made then, and now, but it gets mired in the daily droning dookie that you can hear on the radio.

I heard it was fake playing by one of my peers is it true?
demongeniehunter 1 year ago
@demongeniehunter It was pre-recorded. The instruments wouldn't have played at their best in the cold winter weather, so it was pre-recorded. They are actually playing here, but they only ones that could hear the actual playing are those that were close up.

Why is it that when someone doesn't get your stupid, unnecessary, badly done sarcasm, they're automatically a hillbilly? What does being a hillbilly have to do with anything?

Just to let u guys know....Music is something which will follow us till we breathe in our last breath. Science...Maths....Geography...etc..is something that after we have reached a certain age, all these will start to fade from our mind and we'll soon forget everything............

I remember that they made us watch this in history, and my best friend & I weren't paying attention to anything until this came on: we got extremely quiet & just listened... We nearly cried at the beauty of this performance! :)

Are you serious? Why the hell would they do that when some of the greatest most incredible living musicians can play an original work instead?
socratesrazo 2 years ago 2
you are an idiot, your original response was "fuck you"
beyond that, your inability to grasp sar-casm (I am guessing that is how you hillbilly-types pronounce it) speaks for itself
maybe you aren't even old enough to be here unsupervised
MeIsArtTickYouLet 2 years ago
That "fuck you" was meant for another comment in another video and it was a joke. I was doing multiple responses at once and I initially did the wrong responses for the wrong videos. The second comment was originally meant for you. I didn't know how to remove the first one and I'm sorry If i didn't grasp your sarcasm, it just dosen't seem sarcastic. And I'm no hill-billy.
socratesrazo 2 years ago
they did it cuz it was really cold and when instruments like trumpets or fluets especialy get frozen in zero tempurature when played live.
