I just saw Kool-Boy, like a year ago, at the Dub show. Some random cat tried to battle him, right in front of the booth I was promoting for. Haha Kool-Boy smashed that foo yo.
I grew up in South Central. We were lock'N first! But, as time went on and moves started to change, we started poplock'N! That's pop'N and lock'N together. I poplock. I mix lock'n with my pop'n. Plain and simple.
Some try and disscredit the culture of a Poplocking >>> it is because they know of the dance popping and the dance locking... Now welcome to Southern California where 1 can witness a dance created from the people of the surrounding region... Its truely its own style. PopLocking FBC
Ronnie Hudson said it 1982: Poplocking in Rolls-Royces, Cadillac, Lincoln and Mercedes Benz Poplocking in Howard Johnson, Sheraton Poplocking at the Holiday Inn Poplocking in Hollywood, it's understood While listening to the Mac Poplocking at Broadway, everyday To the Preachers So rough, so tough, out here baby So rough, so tough, out here California knows how to party In the city, of L.A. In the city, of good old Watts. In the city, city of Compton There Poplock
Straight up pop lockin! OG Kool Boy doing it up! Who says ain't no such thing as pop lockin? What's Kool Boy's motto Lanier? "I strive to keep pop lock alive". Pop lockin is alive and thrivin in da West Coast...best believe it! :o)
I will still say pop locking doesn't exist under certain conditions.
those conditions being people who are just to ignorant to differentiate between popping and locking. and if it's being used in stupid songs like "pop lock it drop it". that song and video is just wrong. no real hip hop dancing other than video hip pop is used in that crap.
yeah man I totally hear you. I guess the story of compton hasn't been told as often as it should have been. I mean you gotta understand where people like me are coming from too because this debate has been going on since the EBs and late 70's.
but now I know, right?
any way, keep pop locking, and I'm gonna be keepin it funky on the east coast
I get it already. I didn't tell you to tell me who you are, and I by far did not say you don't know shit. if you insist on arguing by all means go ahead, but there's nothing left to argue.
well credibility means a lot. I'm not persecuting you saying you don't know shit, but if I know more of your background and where you coming from, I can find it easier to agree with you, and learn that I may be wrong. nothing but love brotha. we're all in hip hop to spread the knowledge and show poeple what it's REALLY all about. thanks for the lesson..
althouh in the end I will still not refer to it as poplocking lol. no offense on that.
but there is no style of dance called pop locking!
you can I guess be a pp locker based on clothes you're wearing versus the dance you're doing, but the fact remains pop locking is not a style of hip hop dancing
also, I mean no disrespect to anyone, we can disagree all day long, but the vid is pretty sweet. good to see some old roots of real rap and hip hop both dancing and vocals in the same place for once.
I can breathe a sigh of relief that this isn't just another sellout

Cool video. Even though the term is widely used there really is no such thing as "poplocking". People need to know that Locking and Popping are really two different dance styles that started at different periods in the 70's. Locking started in the early 70's by Don Campbell and Popping came in the mid to late 70's.
Here's how I once heard how the term poplockin got started. Both Locking and Popping started in Cali in the 70's,many people did both styles, they both were danced to Funk music,so they both got mixed together more in people's minds producing the term poplockin. Anyway that's just one theory.

it's a damn shame when the poeple who started hip hop are getting it wrong.
gimme all the thumbs down in the world you want, then do some research to find out pop locking is a generic made up term.

lockin is the root word for super dance
(in the hood)
poppin was a dance that we did in the clubs with girls...(it was a club dance in 78)
when i saw folks pop-lockin?
its another way of saying heres the super-dance to that dance...
truck is the root word...for instance
lowrider truck is the description of that kinda truck...
