@marispatrice I's pretty difficult to describe (and I'm not good at describing), but you wouldn't say "Die ist Kiwi" either... It's "Das ist Kiwi". When you're pointing at someone you could say "Die _da_ ist Kiwi", but my mother always told me to not say "Die da" to someone... it's not very polite :) ... Anyway it wouldn't be "Wer ist der" "Der ist Mr. Green" it has to be "Das ist Mr. Green" and the right question is "Wer ist das" ;)

Check out the French in Action Series to see how a professor teaches a language without teaching grammar per se; but rather through storytelling. Its called the Capretz Method.... the nominative case is used by every noun that is doing action, even if it's the verb 'to be' or 'to have'. question: who or what is doing action? answer: Der Apfel, because the apple is doing the verb 'to be'. greetings from jermanee ;)

I am from South West Germany and yes, I have been two times to Berlin. It is cool but it isn't really representative for Germany. The south is very different from the north anyways...

Actually in your sentence the subject is THIS not the apple. The apple in this sentence is the object which should be the Accusative case. A sentence where the apple would be in nominative case is e.g.: Der Apfel ist grün (The apple is green).

So if you apply the questions of nominative: Who or What is green? You can answer: The apple. Which means this is nominative case.

In the sentence" This is an apple/Das ist ein Apfel." The question for the apple would be " What is this?-This is an apple."

sorry, its a good video, but it makes no sense to me (I'm Brazilian). To me the subject of a sentence like "Das ist ein Apfel" should be "Das", while "Apfel" should be the direct object.

Accordingly, the question you should ask is "What is an apple" and the answer would be "This, this is an apple"

It would be really great if you could explain in detail why it isn't so...
