The chessboard on the beach reminds me of The Seventh Seal. Maya makes creative use of the cuts/transitions, eschewing a traditional narrative for dream logic. And if I may say so, she exudes a real onscreen presence.
Maya Deren, as basferatu touched on in his/her interpretation, was a master of the use of "dream logic" in her movies. Most of the time, events progressed as they would in a dream.
I hate it if people put interpretations to movies...I should stop reading the information, they always affect my own point of view and spoil the movie. :/
The thing about Maya's films, Especially this one, is that they are not supposed to have any linking narrative structure. Just like Meshes, the film is supposed to evoke a dream like ambivalence that does not have a concrete meaning. Even more than Meshes the film goes out of its way to avoid a clear narrative. What you're supposed to take from the film is more or less the 'flow' of energy continued from shot to shot, rather than what its saying narratively speaking
Right on Bro... just love the way you said it- I thought it, but couldn't say as well as you. Have you seen, "Last Year at Marienbad"? ...talk about flow and wonderful b & w..... Bless you for posting this Nectar, Clarice....

I guess it also goes out of its way to avoid annoying considerations such as sound.

Very interesting and intense artist. She's someone I would like to be with, marooned on and island for a week or two.

idk if i understood this movie well:
but its about woman...who are connected to the earth and are the earth itself (coz they bare children)...
and she was straight out of nature and went into this masculine world where she was a strainger and she could really reach and understand them??
