this happend to me in a small complex. the houses at my neighborhood were far apart. about 5 guys at 3 am tried to break in my front door. i then took out my 30 30 loaded it and by the time i was done they broke through. I fired a full 5 rounds and manage to injure 3 of them 2 of them took off. the 3 were crying to call of help. but then i waited 1 hour for them to suffer then called.

@Bryanisms The type of accuracy needed to "shoot to wound" is also extremely difficult to achieve in a self defense situation. It's really not that hard to consisently hit a shoulder/hand/knee size area...shooting at a static target, with all the time in the world to line up your shot and with no one fighting back. Add a moving target that is fighting back, with the stress and quick decisions that go along with that and you see why you are supposed to aim for the torso when SHTF.

I caught them in the act of vandalising my property and when I came out to confront them, they refused to leave and then decided to push for a fight. I only hit him when all 3 approached me after I gave explicit warning to back off, I could have aimed for the head but I went for the upper arm. I only wanted them to leave. The police are on my side, I have no history of violence.
