The blackware of the Pueblo Indians of the U.S. Southwest burnish the pot, then apply slip of the same clay on the burnished surface. The pot is then fired in a wood or dung fueled fire, typically on the ground, so the pot picks up carbon in the firing, which makes the black. The burnished portion is glossy, the slip flat. This is a low fired technique. Your pot turned out nicely.
Thanks Dan. No, I have no reason to complain if you use this idea, watch "the hands of Maria" to see how it is supposed to be done. The pot was fired at 1000C (bisc temperature). To get the best effect I would brush on at least 2, maybe 3, layers of the mix and then burnish. The problem I found was spraying it meant that it was a bit thin in places and I couldn't see this until it was fired.
Mark, Your videos just get better and better. Not sure which is more entertaining... the video technique or your work :) It's all so very nice, thanks for posting, Sharon
I've never come across this technique before it's great to see someting new. It would be nice to see it done in the curvysgrafitto patern you've done before great video , the splitscreen was very effective...regards steve
Thanks for the feedback Steve, glad you enjoyed it. I was thinking of using this technique to do my swirls and then sgraffito around the pattern to add definition (great minds!). I have a big vase left, hidden beneath a bin bag, that I may try it on over Christmas.

@potterybyjohn You are quite right John. I was just trying to get a similar effect. Watch the "Hands of Maria" video to see the real technique.
