@pksdjerz totally agree!!! How is he over Csonka??? Campbell and Brown, ok, but Riggins? I agree that Riggins should be in that list but not #2... Earl Cambell and Larry Csonka were both BEASTS
First and ten. run the diesel. three yards. second and seven. run the diesel. three yards. third and four. run the diesel. three yards. 4th and 1. run the diesel....First and ten...
Riggo was awesome. I doubt he could do it today though cus he would probably get flagged for roughing a linebacker or something. Cant hit anymore cant tackle, when i see watch these old nfl clips it makes me sad cus it was so much harder back in those days. Collective bargaining and money is murdering the holy game.
Don't need a countdown. This one belongs to Earl Campbell, ask anyone he ran over or carried on his back into the endzone. Best overall running back, yup, that would be Jim Brown.
Man riggins wasn't 1/3 the back that earl was in his prime, dudes career was longer bcuz he took a year off and wasn't ran into the ground like earl and earl still had an mvp and three rushing titles in his first three years in the NFL! And riggins is ahead of him? Overrated
@syanide801. Earl was more powerful than Riggo but Riggins could always avoid those cheap shots that the refs didn't call then particularly from behind when those DB's and LB's would come and hit you in the back of the head or knee when you went down toward the sidelines. Likewise, Earl took too many bad falls.
@syanide801 I agree that Campbell had more raw power and should have been #2 instead of Riggo. But Riggo was a great player himself, not overrated IMO.
3.cline sawuser from vikings!! there you go i would say peyton hillis should be number one but i would choose the a train because he powers and runs almost faster then any body in the nfl!
That dude noting how Riggo seemed to get better as he got older... Hey man, Diesel took a year and a half off, at his peak. Most star RB's get to 2,000 carries by their 27th or 29th year of age, and quickly deteriorate thereafter. Riggo didn't get 2,000 until he was 33... in 1982.
This is also Becuase George Allen and Jack Pardee used him as a Fullback. Joe Gibbs saw the light and made him a feature back. It's was either 1979 or 1980 he had less carrys then Benny Fucking Malone Jack Pardee was a idiot for offense.
Who in the world put John Riggins ahead of Earl Campbell? I mean Riggins was a great player, but c'mon! We're talking about Earl freaking Campbell, the most brutal man to ever play, nobody had hits like Earl did.
@jkiddhero dude Barry Sanders couldn't be a power back ever. He is an elusive back, and a hell of a good one, but he never did learn how to lower his shoulder and take the 2 yards. He always tried to cut back and make something amazing happen, and 1/8 times it did work.
@itsmybunny1 the only perception of him being slow, would be from highlights that arent played at full speed. Payton had the perfect combination of skills, to be the greatest ever
@TerrorWarrior5000 you are a racist idiot. John Riggins is in the Hall of Fame and the Redskins won the Superbowl xvii on his back, literally. 600+ rushing yards that postseason, including a then superbowl record of 166 rushing yards. The 610 rushing yards and 625 yards from scrimmage he gained in the 82 playoffs are both single NFL postseason records. He accounted for about half of his team's offensive production. Turned a 4th and inches play into a 43 yard gain, the key play of the superbowl
@TerrorWarrior5000 you are a racist turd who supports Israel nuking out the entire world. Did you know what Jesus said to the jews who didn't convert? you are either a christian or a jew, there is no such thing as judeo christianity, its contradicting.
Riggins is in the HOF, held track records before playing in the NFL, he has multiple post season records, not to mention he had great playing until he was 36, he was much faster with the Jets, everyone remembers the 30 yr old with the Redskins
Jim Taylor, Larry Csonka, Mark Van Eeghan, John Riggins, Craig James, Mike Alstott. What do they all have in common? well all of them broke 1,000 yards in a season except Alsttott who had 949, all of them won a Superbowl except James, who is the reason the Pats won their1st AFC championship, taking them 2 the superbowl. Jim Taylor was right before the merger so NFL championship, he was right behind Jim Brown every year in rushing, and even had him beat one year, so stop with your racist bullshit
@dwid1984 even lesser talented guys like Merril Hoge helped their team have post season success. Everyone thought the game had passed Chuck Noll by, but with Hoge's hard running they made it to the the post season, despite having crappy qb play. He rushed for 100 yards against the Oilers and they won advancing, the next week he rushed for 130 against the Broncos, they lost by 1 point. Hoge had 1100 yards from scrimmage in 88 and 90.
@dwid1984 brad muster had 1100 yards from scrimmage in 90 and helped the Bears go to the postseason, earning the game ball 7 times. He had 92 yards in the 1st playoff round helping them advance to the 2nd round of the playoffs, but only got 4 carries the next game and they lost. So stop with the hate. White backs produce, even fullbacks like Rathman and Moose Johnston were key pieces in their offense. Rathman couldve been a tailback if he didn't have to bulk up and block
One reason the NFL "top 100 players" is bogus: Riggins isn't on it!!! How is he the NFL's #2 power back, but not even on that list? What a load of crap!
A lot of people don't think Alstott should be on this list because he never had over 1000 yards or anything. This isn't about the greatest backs in general its about their skill, and if you ever watched the few times Mike actually got the ball, you'd know he was going to tear up some defenders. He never got the ball much because he was a full back and he played for passing offenses west coast and spread offenses that didn't run the ball a lot in general yet alone five to the big guy
@lionslicer9999 he had a 1188 yards from scrimmage in 99, yards from scrimmage should be counted, i agree splitting time with Dunn, but when Dunn was gone Alstott should have gotten 300 carries, splitting with Pittman was stupid on the Bucs part. He never got the ball enough because he was a white tailback, and its hard for people to grasp the idea of a white tailback. Mike had some moves to go along with his power, Gruden is when his carries decreased
@dwid1984 I was surprised when Alstott got less carries with Gruden. West Coast offenses require a running and recieving fullback to function but he was on the field less in general and Gruden like adored Alstott.
@lionslicer9999 Gruden only viewed Alstott as a short yardage back/ goal line back, even getting his name wrong calling him Mark Alstott, I don't think Gruden adored him that much, that retirement ceremony seemed fake. When Gruden was hired Alstott saw less playing time each year. Gruden won the Superbowl with someone elses players, I never liked him much as a coach, I think Dungy couldve gotten them over the hump, but I guess you gotta give credit for the Superbowl
@lionslicer9999 I really think Alstott was the heart and soul of that team, and big reason for their success, when you have a guy like that who just gives it his all and refuses to go down, he had some shiftiness that is underrated, but also incredible balance and power, he fought for every yard after contact. That kind of attitude just pumps up everybody. I don't think he was really a fullback, not until until 03 he ran mostly at the halfback spot, and rarely caught passes as a fb
I was born in DC and now live in California. John Riggins destroyed Miami down the street from where I live at the Rose Bowl. Lets get back to the days of glory Redskins!
