@jeremark90 Well if by fag you mean gay that has nothing to do with appreciating good music. If by fag you mean show any sign of emotion and consider it weak then unfortunately you are ;).
WOWZA :0-) Like this guys style of comedy, also plays some really great songs but never thought he was a GREAT singer.Kudos man, absolutely loved this to pieces.
Sorry, "got it off Some American Guy", just doesn't cut it. Mr. M needs to give Charlie Rich some props. Nice enough cover though. I'll take J Mascis's version. Carry on...
@imaginaryboy238 I've seen him do it live - he got it off his brother, who got it off the Notting Hillbillies, who got it off Charlie Rich. Giving all those guys credit was probably not the wordy introduction the Sun wanted, but I agree.
you can listen to this song and not hear something religious, but just a song about feeling lost etc., just like you could sing and play it from a non-religious point. it can come from a place in your heart that doesn't hold god, but still holds the emotion in the song, if that makes sense.
I can't help but wonder if it's me... my mistake I mean, in not thinking he is 'being sarcastic' at the start... isn't it possible to be 'spiritual' without being 'religious'... really?
@mouldyoldcrow I'm afraid it is just you; that's Tim's sense of humour. :P It is definitely possible to be spiritual without beign religious, but Tim generally shuns spirituality wherever possible.
@Equihan That's what threw me off a bit, because he usually expresses negativity about "spirituality", especially about how vague and mundane it is, and has actually denied being at all 'spiritual' in any religious sense.
@SuperMardiGrasBros i think it's more of the idea that religion instill that a higher being dictates the lives of people, thereby foregoing free will. it's the idea that people automatically group religion and spirituality together. religion is man made. spirituality is something more.....my two cents.
I absolutely adore that he chose such a religious song without being remotely religious himself. I see how there might be a disconnect for theists watching this, but as an atheist I can listen and identify wholly with the singer---and listening to gospel (which I love regardless) I never get that chance. Someone like Tim singing a spiritual, and so beautifully...rare thing. Perfect for me.
the amount of times i have gone to write comments on his videos (eg: this one) and had to delete all i have written is infinite. the one explanation is this; words simply can-not describe the talent of this guy, both musically and comically. I speak no word of a lie when i say i could listen to his songs all day. <3

suicidal anthem---a loving God would not want us to give up because we have failed at life, so far. God would want us to achieve meaning and happiness before "going home".
@CattailsandRoses Sometimes home is where we need to be - particularly when no 'loving God' sees fit to intervene in our suffering. Home is a place of familiarity, of rest. To call this a 'suicidal anthem' is to tragically misunderstand it.
@Equihan trust me, just because a song is about a trying time in life doesnt mean its a suicidal anthem, its just somebody crying out to god/whatever that theyre just knackered and want to go back to a place in space and time where theyre not completely exhausted, somewhere that they can refer to as 'home' lol
although i reckon the original version MIGHT have just been about touring and being homesick and shizz, musicians do that sorta stuff lol.
OH YEA, sure, tim minchin can play a religious song, and actually have the nerve and the balls to do it pretty damn well, but i'd like to see some religious dude play White Wine In The Sun without just being a closed minded prick >:C
@SoranManus I think I appreciate what you're getting at but I'm pretty sure both camps have similar proportions of open-minded and closed-minded pricks. You tend not to notice the open-minded religious types because they're usually the ones who don't make a spectacle of themselves.
@SoranManus sorry, been there done that. Tim is absolutely AWESOME!!! Just saw him in Atlanta this week and he even ended the night with 2 encores with one being Hallelujah. Amazing voice and he's funny as hell!
This cat blows my mind...seriously, what a brilliant person. I strongly recommend that if you like this song, check out White Wine in the Sun too...its also beautiful. From hilarious to downright touching, Tim Minchin really is something else.
I'm currently watching this sat in an airport waiting for my flight home after several months of being away. Feels appropriate :) Very beautiful song.

Tim Minchin does it again. Technical playing perfection? I could care less. He makes up for any flaws with this intellect and presentation. You go Tim ;)
