  • This is raw

  • I could listen to this talented cunt play piano and sing all day man, I might sound like a total fag (which im not) but jesus lol.

  • @jeremark90 Well if by fag you mean gay that has nothing to do with appreciating good music. If by fag you mean show any sign of emotion and consider it weak then unfortunately you are ;).

  • You can find Charlie Rich version also on the youtube

  • WOWZA :0-) Like this guys style of comedy, also plays some really great songs but never thought he was a GREAT singer.Kudos man, absolutely loved this to pieces.

  • awesome. would like to se a hookup with knofler on guitar here

  • Wow.

  • terrible. what a waste of time...

  • how the fuck does he keep his eyeliner on?!?!?! everytime i come home i look like a fucking racoon!

  • Sorry, "got it off Some American Guy", just doesn't cut it. Mr. M needs to give Charlie Rich some props. Nice enough cover though. I'll take J Mascis's version. Carry on...

  • @imaginaryboy238 I've seen him do it live - he got it off his brother, who got it off the Notting Hillbillies, who got it off Charlie Rich. Giving all those guys credit was probably not the wordy introduction the Sun wanted, but I agree.

  • @imaginaryboy238 Good cover by that Australian bloke though.

  • you can listen to this song and not hear something religious, but just a song about feeling lost etc., just like you could sing and play it from a non-religious point. it can come from a place in your heart that doesn't hold god, but still holds the emotion in the song, if that makes sense.

  • I can't help but wonder if it's me... my mistake I mean, in not thinking he is 'being sarcastic' at the start... isn't it possible to be 'spiritual' without being 'religious'... really?

  • @mouldyoldcrow I'm afraid it is just you; that's Tim's sense of humour. :P It is definitely possible to be spiritual without beign religious, but Tim generally shuns spirituality wherever possible.

  • @Equihan That's what threw me off a bit, because he usually expresses negativity about "spirituality", especially about how vague and mundane it is, and has actually denied being at all 'spiritual' in any religious sense.

  • @SuperMardiGrasBros Mmhmm, I know. There's a cheeky little smile at the edges of his mouth that tells you he's being a sarcastic devil, though.

  • @SuperMardiGrasBros i think it's more of the idea that religion instill that a higher being dictates the lives of people, thereby foregoing free will. it's the idea that people automatically group religion and spirituality together. religion is man made. spirituality is something more.....my two cents.

  • @Equihan @mouldyoldcrow Tim's opinion on spirituality:

"I don't even know what that means!!"

  • I absolutely adore that he chose such a religious song without being remotely religious himself. I see how there might be a disconnect for theists watching this, but as an atheist I can listen and identify wholly with the singer---and listening to gospel (which I love regardless) I never get that chance. Someone like Tim singing a spiritual, and so beautifully...rare thing. Perfect for me.

  • Dont have the words to descibe how much i LOVE Tims version of this. Amazing.

  • the amount of times i have gone to write comments on his videos (eg: this one) and had to delete all i have written is infinite. the one explanation is this; words simply can-not describe the talent of this guy, both musically and comically. I speak no word of a lie when i say i could listen to his songs all day. <3

  • how can i not loving you more each day tim minchin

  • sang with so much passion, beautiful

  • @08gilleasa A brother, some plural form of sisters, aunts and uncles. His gran and his mum. There's a whole lotta minchins :P

  • what i would do to be able to play a grand piano....

  • @CattailsandRoses Sometimes home is where we need to be - particularly when no 'loving God' sees fit to intervene in our suffering. Home is a place of familiarity, of rest. To call this a 'suicidal anthem' is to tragically misunderstand it.

  • @Equihan trust me, just because a song is about a trying time in life doesnt mean its a suicidal anthem, its just somebody crying out to god/whatever that theyre just knackered and want to go back to a place in space and time where theyre not completely exhausted, somewhere that they can refer to as 'home' lol

although i reckon the original version MIGHT have just been about touring and being homesick and shizz, musicians do that sorta stuff lol.

  • @CattailsandRoses He (nor I) believe in invisible men

  • @Diddlen It's scientifically proven that men can, indeed, become invisible.with carbon nanotubes. Straw Man fail.

  • @CattailsandRoses To God, we've all failed at life.

  • OH YEA, sure, tim minchin can play a religious song, and actually have the nerve and the balls to do it pretty damn well, but i'd like to see some religious dude play White Wine In The Sun without just being a closed minded prick >:C

  • @SoranManus I think I appreciate what you're getting at but I'm pretty sure both camps have similar proportions of open-minded and closed-minded pricks. You tend not to notice the open-minded religious types because they're usually the ones who don't make a spectacle of themselves.

  • @SoranManus woooo go tim <3

  • @SoranManus sorry, been there done that. Im religious, but I'm a liberalist, so i don't mind stuff like time. plus, i agree with a lot of it. and its not like he's trying to personally insult me. he is amazing! to prove it, i will even tell you how much i love woody allen jesus, if you don't know the video watch it then you will understand what i mean. Tim is gods gift to earth, he is kind and loving, but genius and funny too. Love him :')

  • Listen to this after a couple of wines... * sigh* Bring on the tears ...

  • he has a brother?! there's more minchins?! :O

  • @08gilliesa yep, and two sisters. :)

  • I just can't stop listening to it ... :)

  • This song sends shivers down my spine, in a nice way.

  • wow....teary eyed and speechless.

  • Just an absolutely unbelievable talent.....

  • I had a crush on Charlie Rich when I was like 5, which is kind of embarrassing. However this song makes me feel vindicated. Really beautiful.

  • Tim is absolutely AWESOME!!! Just saw him in Atlanta this week and he even ended the night with 2 encores with one being Hallelujah. Amazing voice and he's funny as hell!

  • Raped the replay-button <3

  • I'm a militant atheist and I almost cried. =(

  • It's not perfect, but it's his :)

  • That's the song I want to hear when I die

  • This cat blows my mind...seriously, what a brilliant person. I strongly recommend that if you like this song, check out White Wine in the Sun too...its also beautiful. From hilarious to downright touching, Tim Minchin really is something else.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm currently watching this sat in an airport waiting for my flight home after several months of being away. Feels appropriate :) Very beautiful song.

  • 2 people don't feel like going home.

  • I dont know if hes an atheist or if thats just his personia, either way he really done the song well

  • @metallic612 He is definitely an atheist. :)

  • @Equihan yeah, but it doesn't keep him from respecting religious songs. They actually show off his voice very well.

  • @HRRNighthawk As long as you're aware it's not the religious part he's "respecting". :P

  • @Equihan virtue & integrity, tim's fan should all have this.

  • @metallic612 yeah, very much atheist, hence the sarcasm at the start:D haha <3

  • @jimbbb i did "check it out" and um... yeah, tim's version is better, just as his version of hallelujah is better:P ahhhh (would be even better tho if it wasn't fuzzy...:'()

  • awh. Minchin touches me. Well.. you know, i wish.

  • this is so lovely especially since he is an atheist ~ lush ♥

  • some American dude sang it better. Your version is ok Charlie Rich's is better.

  • @DRUSHING711 No offense, but I've heard Charlie Rich's version and I prefer Minchin. Suppose it might be different if the original was stuck in my head before hearing this version.

  • I can't believe that someone disliked this...just makes this song sadder.

  • Truly touching song even for this atheist.

  • ha harry potter with his baton.

  • This makes me cry every time.. :)

  • gorgeous, honest, raw cover

  • Compleatly amazing. <33

  • as much as i love his comedic songs when he dose stuff like this i love him so much more!

  • @roseofthebrook someone said that Tom shouldn't have performed for the sun because of their ridiculous beliefs and so I was making the same point as you, he's not promoting their idiotic beliefs and just taking their money instead.

  • @roseofthebrook I don't know if your trying to argue with me or agree with me there. In the context of my conversation I was making exactly the same point as you; some said to

  • Wow. I want that played at my funeral.

  • y'all shut up. its a good video don't ruin it.

  • This is so beautiful because you can tell by his inflection of voice and the look in his eyes that this song is personal to him. It might not be technically perfect, but its undeniably full of feeling.

  • A beautiful song but I'm just a little disappointed that Tim performed for The Sun after (quite rightly) criticising similar right-wing rags (i.e. The Daily Mail) in his other songs.

  • @sonofliberty1 But what has the sun got out of this? Tim has simply taken their money and sung a few songs. He's not promoted their beliefs at all.

  • @tomsando44 As far as I can make out, the only beliefs The Sun have are the belief that women look better topless, and everything is everyone leses fault....

His job is to sing and play the piano. If he were to turn down a job, he would have less money to support his family...

  • @sonofliberty1 Maybe working on the inside may help make things better?

  • One of a few men who look good with guyliner. <333 And beautifully talented.

  • this song is lovely.

    an tim's voice is beautiful.

    love him

  • Just beautiful. I am glad to see Tim get the recognition he deserves for being a truly talented musician, not just a comedian. He's a brilliant comedian too. But he is first and foremost a brilliant musician.

  • i love tim so much x

  • Tim Minchin does it again. Technical playing perfection? I could care less. He makes up for any flaws with this intellect and presentation. You go Tim ;)

  • this sent shivers up my spine, I love his voice.

  • inperfection is often what makes music great. The little fuck ups and the odd broken note... You can get technical perfection over time with enough practise but you can't learn that kind of depth or passion and you can't buy tone like that. Having said that this was my idea of perfect. Yet agian my mind was blown and my love of this man and his talent has grown even further :) x

  • New respect for this fella after this.

  • I love this bastard.

  • this is absolutley beautiful.

  • WHATS WITH ALL THE CRITIQUES FOR GOD SAKE.... WHO DIED AND ASSIGNED YOU JUDGE AND JURY OF OTHER PEOPLES ABILITIES.... REALLY OFFENSIVE!!

  • @doyson Please stop shouting. I find it more offensive than analysis of Tim's playing.

  • @Equihan ASSUMING THAT WASN'T A JOKE.... I MUST CLARIFY THAT RATHER THAN SHOUTING... IT'S A MATTER OF VERY POOR EYE SIGHT... SO DO FORGIVE ME!!

  • @doyson No, not a joke. All good. :)

  • @doyson Hold CTRL and scroll the mouse wheel. That should zoom the page. :)

  • @Equihan You find capital letters offensive? doyson is not shouting, he/she has been typing, or if you prefer, have typed a reply.

  • @mitsucanter247365 Screen shouting can be considered rude, but I personally am not offended by it. That was kinda the point. Capital letters aren't offensive, nor is critiquing God. I'm sure the big guy can handle a little constructive criticism. :P

  • @Equihan Lol. Big letters mean shouting? o0' They are still letters and not words said.

  • @Equihan its cool on autodrive

  • @doyson Who are you to judge their judging ability?

  • @ladyjanegray5 I admire his ability to continue to play/sing at such a high standard in such a pressured situation. As a "wannabe" musician I can hear that the note 4:11 is slightly off and as a "wannabe" musician I understand the cheeky smile that comes across his face as him laughing at himself.

  • @musicanwannabe It sounds as though, rather than being out of tune, he's just played a different chord (progression) that doesn't fit the note. That note would fit the 6th, but not necessarily the 4th - which, I *think*, is what he's playing. Don't quote me though, cos I'm half asleep at the mo. Either way, it's a cute little flaw.

  • Awesome!!!

  • Repetitive listening makes this song better and better.

  • working for the sun now?

  • Wow, that was amazing! I may have a new favorite song!

  • whoever recorded this, did a terrible job.

The piano mic is WAY too quiet.

And Tim's vocal mic is too clear and loud. His voice is powerful enough. The mic should have a slightly gritty sound

  • musicianwannabe....I think you are way off base....I cannot see, hear or speak that Tim would smile or attempt to appear as tho he is joyous to miss the sentiment of wanting to leave....thank you Tim for this ....to hear you...and still want to leave..such an insight...have a care sir...(wanna be)...some of us are tired.....dodgy indeed

  • Unbelievably beautiful!

  • BEST! COVER!, EVAR!

  • Charlie Rich is not just "some American dude" He is one of the most under rated artists of all time!

  • This is amazing. <3

  • Love at the end he's just like yep now what :L

Love him so much.. he is amazing x

  • My god I can't stop listening to this song.

  • There is one dodgy note at 4:11 which you can almost see him trying not to smile. Don't take this the wrong way.....I am a huge fan of his and love the song. Just it makes me laugh every time :P

  • @musicanwannabe Aye, he's not perfect... but he's damn good. :P

  • @Equihan Dont you mean: He's not perfect... but he's fine? :)

  • @soppehuet He's where i spend the vast majority of my time lol

  • @Equihan fuck you, he is perfect :)

  • @reddevil572 Haha. :)

  • nice

  • Great song :)

  • Recording sounds a little scratchy...

  • @siladi Aye, the vocal track's not great. The original file was like that though, and there's not much I can do about it. Sorry.
