Please excuse me if I did not get the gist of what you were talking about. No way would I ever live in NYC or near that. Yet I am in Bangkok and after nearly 4 years I am getting out. I will keep my condo here so my Thai family or my daughter from US can use. Again sometimes hard to get in to what is being said. These people have to take off their rose tinted glasses. I've lived in Bangkok for over ten years -I'm working here- but eighty percent of what this guy is babbling about is BS. Unless you've got tons of money you can live here on a permanent residency. If you're on a retirement visa you need to get 2200 dollars a month in retirement coming from overseas, otherwise you have to keep making visa runs. Government has a policy in place that doesn't exactly encourage people to settle down here.

The same can be said about BKK... especially the driving "etiquette" - or lack thereof. Upcountry, at there is at least some semblance of courtesy - I've actually seen folks yield.

I am now retired here, have a condo in Bangkok and now moving up North for a quite life and cleaner air. The people are friendly, you get what you give here. Sure they want your business/money. Don't they in New York and I know about the hospitality up there, drop dead on the street and they step over you.

My dad lives there, and i go a few times a year. Part of what they're saying is true to an extent. But if you want a similar lifestyle to what you have in "the west" it's just the same amount of money. And you need money to make money. Before you go, plan thoroughly, think it through, then plan again. And don't commit too much to what you wouldn't want to leave without.

US) and you can own a bar ~ these people are free ~ spent 7 months here already this year and have never once seen a cop pull someone over ~ relaxed, happy, easygoing, friendly and honorable people!

But away from the tourist and sex areas, Thailand is beautiful - countless waterfalls, hill-tribes, forest, hiking, rafting, etc, as the boys in the vid say. Then there is the exotic culture, that if you're adventurous, if quite fascinating. Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket are not representative of upcountry Thailand.

Personally I'd opt for opening an online business. The company would be based in BVI (British Virgin Islands), servers in the Netherlands, business would be done with Western clients, bank accounts in the Phillipines and Singapore, and I'd live in Kuala Lumpur.
KL is great because it's in the middle of SE Asia, it's a modern city, it's cheap, it's clean and you can get $15-25 flights to Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia etc. with Air Asia.

Dude, Bangkok is VERY dirty and I would not want to live there. You have to wear a mask constantly. The people are great though! There are many nice little rural towns available that are VERY CHEAP to live in. I live in Norway, and you are right about Scandinavians loving some Thailand.
I spent a few months in Thailand. It was awesome! Don't like Bangkok thought. Best place for me is Chang Mai, or if you must be in the south, Pattaya.
I think with the massive populations in Asia, in the long-term they're going to be in trouble too, in terms of food supply. Thailand will likely be invaded in their long-term future. I think I'll stay put.

Unless you've got tons of money you can live here on a permanent residency. If you're on a retirement visa you need to get 2200 dollars a month in retirement coming from overseas, otherwise you have to keep making visa runs. Government has a policy in place that doesn't exactly encourage people to settle down here.

My dad lives there, and i go a few times a year. Part of what they're saying is true to an extent. But if you want a similar lifestyle to what you have in "the west" it's just the same amount of money. And you need money to make money. Before you go, plan thoroughly, think it through, then plan again. And don't commit too much to what you wouldn't want to leave without.

I watch people rent these spaces for $50 US a month and turn them into businesses left and right ~ they are opening pool halls, coffee shops, karaokes, wine bars, stores, massage parlours and on and on ~ to have a liquor license to sell booze it cost $200 baht (6. Sell off everything back home and move to start an "easy life" running a bar or a "small hotel" etc. Well, these guys will wake up one day just to realise that reality catched up on them where you have to think "bath" not dollars and exchange rates. But away from the tourist and sex areas, Thailand is beautiful - countless waterfalls, hill-tribes, forest, hiking, rafting, etc, as the boys in the vid say. Then there is the exotic culture, that if you're adventurous, if quite fascinating. Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket are not representative of upcountry Thailand.

Here is the Fact 5...Recent coup, martial law, political instability and south border conflict. It's is the illuminati issue. I believed that we also got 9/11 here in south border. Then it lead to shape up the martial law bill. It should mean to take care the south border region. But Thaksin passed this bill by slip it in for the whole country. Here is the Fact 4...Huge saving rate and they are ready to move when the bank lower their interest or stock market soar. Last week Gov. issue bond 70,000,000,000 Baht which sold out in 12 mins. Housing market slow down but still turn around because of these saving. We got sound currency backed by gold, production and commodity. A lot of infrastructure recent built up and ready to go especially in the heart of Bangkok. Avoiding rush hours will save your time just like in other big cities.

Here is the Fact 3...It's true for $1 meal it's exactly the same meal that we charge $8-15 in US. If you like Thai cuisine there? It's taste better here. Or if you willing to spend $50 for the same meal in the hotel. We got it. Low cost of living compare to average. International schools and Uni. all around. Education are up to how you want to invest in it. Our health care system never bankrupt peoples like what happen in US. You pay one third to hospitalize compare to Western or Japan

We're call hub of the region in many aspect. Different cultures ,tourism and life style in different part of the country. Medium-cheap labor compare to average. Own natural gas. Chinese-Thai owned 85% of the economics. Sometime we got stupid government but never mean to depop or kill our own citizen.

As far as teaching goes, most teachers in Thailand have not bothered getting a university-based certification to teach. Thailand is fun I have to agree. It is a very poor country and definately an experience. The food is cheap but I don't think the avg American can eat that kind of food. Your best bet is to stay in your hotel and eat or go to Hardrock cafe.

Well, reality is that Thailand's crime rate is much much higher than the Philippines. Just go to Nationmaster and do your research. Heck, even Japan's crime rate is higher than the Philippines. You can mention all kinds of instances but the numbers tell a different story.

Oh, and for those who don't know, it's not that easy to just "up and go" to a FOREIGN country and get a work permit, etc. For example, if you want to even more to Canada there are tons of regulations and you need to already have work lined up and so forth. You cannot just "move" somewhere and become a resident or citizen. It doesn't work that way.

Personally I'd opt for opening an online business. The company would be based in BVI (British Virgin Islands), servers in the Netherlands, business would be done with Western clients, bank accounts in the Phillipines and Singapore, and I'd live in Kuala Lumpur.
KL is great because it's in the middle of SE Asia, it's a modern city, it's cheap, it's clean and you can get $15-25 flights to Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia etc. with Air Asia.

The new thais president declared a state of emergency just a few weeks ago.There were shooting,looting,killing,murdering,asassination,beheading,in thailand just a few weeks ago,an ASEAN meeting was canceled due to the rioting and protest,thailand is not a place to invest your money....not at the moment,they replace four prime minister in the past few short years...surely there's a problem.

Dude, Bangkok is VERY dirty and I would not want to live there. You have to wear a mask constantly. The people are great though! There are many nice little rural towns available that are VERY CHEAP to live in. I live in Norway, and you are right about Scandinavians loving some Thailand.
