Roy Smeck would have been proud of that playing- lovely, if I could play like that Id never get anything else done. Thank you what a joy, wish I was your neighbour and you practised with the windows open.
I like the sound of the the 1920s style 2 best ; it seems "warmer" than the others. Could this be attributed to it being a 20s instrumen, the Worth Cm strings - or possibly a combination of the two?
IMO, they all sound great but I like the first one best and the last one second. The best way to to describe the tone is harp-like and they seem to play even across all strings.
I did not think there could that much variation between ukes and I was surely wrong.
If anyone knows of better sounding soprano ukes than these Martin, I would love to hear them.
I came so close to getting this martin style 0 on ebay. I bid 150, i was the only bidder, for THREE days i constantly checked the item. The last 15 hours of the auction i thought i was clear so i started selling things on craigslist to pay for it. I sold 8-10 items. And would you know!!! i wake up the next morning excited to get my uke FINALLY! AND THE LAST 3 HOURS OF THE AUCTION 2 PEOPLE BIDDED LIKE CRAZY ALL THE WAY TO $250! DAMNIT!
@Brien182 You don't bid on the internet much, do you? People ALWAYS wait until the last minute. They want to make people think that they're, "in the clear." As you did.
To my untrained ear, I would say the similarity in sound between the 4 ages of the ukes are remarkably the same; but to me the Style 2 wins out with the nicest sustain. Nicely done!
Thanks for the nice playing and song! Gave me very much inspiration for my own ukulele playing! I liked your relaxed playing style! Maybe I should by a Martin uke!
littlegreen88 look at bushman they are right around 2 hun as opposed to the martin is 2,000! and mine sounds great its not made of koa but sounds just as good tested and true by me a musician of 30 years of playing ,most quality ukes are around 6 or 7 hundred(koa hawaiiian)dont buy a cheap uke they sound like crapy toy. but if your just trying to test the waters musicians friend has a fairly useable uke for 25 bucks!
hey! Fantastic playing!!! I'm thinking about buying a nice new ukulele, unfortunately I don't have enough money for a Martin, what other brands would you recommend? What would be a good one for about $150? Thanks so much.
Great playing and great sounding instruments! I think I like the first and the last the most, but it's hard to tell. I'd gladly accept any one of them in case yuo feel you have to many and need to give one away...
He plays that beautiful song perfectly, perfectly. I'm going to learn to play it like that, and when I do, I'm never going to stop playing it, and that's the truth.
hey there, what do you think of Echo Hawaiian koa ukuleles, did you ever come accross one? the martins seem to go for top dollar..they are beautiful though, but i don't know if i've the patience. Again your playing is tremendous mister!!!
beautiful playing and beautiful ukuleles. Would you be able to tell me where is the best place to get a little beauty like those? Ebay? Elderly? thank you
Ebay for sure. If you are a little bit patient and don't buy the first Martin you see, you could get one for a good price. As you can hear, all styles sound quite alike. You just can't go wrong with a vintage Martin! Good luck hunting.
You really know how to play those beautiful ukuleles. Wonderful tune! Like others who have commented, I also prefer the Style 3 best too. Great comparison of vintage Martins. Really enjoyed this!!
So there you go, folks, FranSpain summarized it before I could. And 0, 1, 2, 3? It doesn't make a difference, really. They're all marvellous, especially in the hands of The Gentle Giant of the Low Lands!
(a pity that the sound quality isn't to write home about. I'll have to opt for an thorough in-person comparative study, I fear.)
oh my god i love this song!

A nice Lanikai ukulele might suit you well. Same kind as Zach Condon uses only costs around $90.

My experience with strings would rate them in the following order (from worst to best)
D'Addario
Martin
Hilo
Mala red
Worth (not much experience with these)
Ko'olau Gold
Aquila (best! I love the harder wound strings)
The Aquila sound great on my 1990s Martin S-O - Loud and snappy!
